Workshop on Drones and Aerodynamics

Drone technology is constantly evolving as a new innovation. Unmanned aerial vehicle technology covers everything from the aerodynamics of the drone, materials in the manufacture of the physical UAV, to the circuit boards, chipset and software which are the brains of the drone. One of the most popular drones on the market is the DJI Phantom 3. This drone was very popular with professional aerial cinematographers. New and highly advanced drones such as the DJI Mavic, Phantom 4 Pro and Inspire 2 also have emerged into the market. Drones are equipped with different technology such as infra-red cameras (military UAV), GPS and laser (military UAV).

Two separate workshops were conducted on “Drones” and “Aerodynamics” on March 22nd 2018 in the Electronics Labs for the students of Diploma II and BE II. The Diploma II students constructed drones which flew in certain dimensions as programmed by them in the software. The BE II students constructed line following robots which moved along predefined paths. Both the workshops were much appreciated by the students and nearly all could successfully complete the tasks assigned to them. The students could relate the drones constructed during workshop with the practical ones in the market and could understand its functionalities.

Study Tour @ India

Department of Architecture had organized a study tour spanning 10 days to India (Gujarat-Rajasthan-Orissa) from 21st to 31st January 2018. This tour complemented the on-campus architectural subjects providing personal experiences of built environments and professional practices, which happens to be an integral part of architectural education. This tour helped the students develop their critical thinking and design skills and also covers a broad spectrum of traditional and contemporary concerned to architecture. The goal of the study tour was to provide the students with opportunities to experience buildings in their context, meet architectural practitioners, visit other architecture programs, and engage in other off campus activities both nationally and internationally. The visited sites are chosen specifically to support the postgraduate architecture curriculum in order to strengthen the competence required in professional practice.

The tour started off from Ahmedabad in Gujarat by visiting some of the most iconic structures. The very famous Adalaj step wells which is an architectural wonder built by Rani Rudabai, a seven storied structure in the form of a well with chambers one behind the other. The beautiful Gandhi Ashram complex offers refuge from the loud streets of the city which was also the headquarters during the long struggle for Indian independence. The visit also covered the Modhera Sun temple which has the most striking feature of the first ray of the sun falling on the deity at the time of equinoxes. Moreover, the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) designed by famous architect Louis Kahn, National Institute of Design (NID) and CEPT University campuses were also a part of the tour. A heritage walk was organized for the students to see the old cities of Ahmedabad with an opportunity to visit the different mosques and temples that were historically and architecturally important. BIT students emerge runners up in the CIMA business champs challenge

The CIMA University Business Champs Challenge is the first employer-led competition, held at the university level in the U.A.E. All participants were provided training by Ms Anju De Alwis, through a series of live online orientation classes.

In the first round, participants were tested on their basic accounting knowledge. We were required to take an individual online test consisting of 30 questions to be answered within a span of 60 minutes. The quiz was challenging and was an in-depth test of our technical accounting knowledge. After an unnerving wait of about a week, we were informed of our successful entry into the second round. A total of six teams moved forward to the finale. After comprehensive and thorough coaching, five months later, we were at the climax of our Business Champs journey. The final two rounds of the competition were held on 21st April 2018. The first round was a buzzer round, consisting of 11 questions. Our team won by a wide margin, and we amiably proceeded to the final round.

For the final showdown, we were given a case study on a garment manufacturing company and had to suggest short-term cost-cutting measures for the case. Further into the presentation, a few questions were thrown by the judges. The other team that progressed to the final round represented Middlesex University and proved to be extremely competent opponents. After an amazing presentation by both the BIT and Middlesex team, a discussion took place amongst the judges that lasted almost 10 minutes. Finally, the BIT RAK team was declared as runners-up to the first title of the CIMA University business champs challenge. Along with the certificates at the end of the session, the winners and the runners up were presented with a rare opportunity to be mentored by senior professionals from multinationals such as Pepsi Co., Coty, Sony, Dubai Duty Free and a job interview for an internship opportunity in Coty.

Seminar by Ms. Janet Hartzenberg (Head of RAK Waste Management Agency)Students of B.Com IV & B.Com II attended a seminar organized by RAK Waste Management Agency, delivered by Ms. Hartzenberg on “Simplest ways to Recycle”. In the seminar, she educated and instructed every student and faculty to recycle in the most simplistic version of re-using waste as a means to build need for some other purpose. She also shared his highness Sheikh Saud’s vision for a cleaner and greener Ras Al Khaimah which is only possible if every resident participates and encourages each other for recycling. Finally before concluding, she also discussed innovative methods to serve community.

Industrial Visit to Microsoft

The department of Computer Science and Engineering arranged an Industrial Visit at Cisco headquarters in Internet City, Dubai on 5th of March for BE VI semester CSE and Diploma VI semester CE students along with CISCO trainer Mr. Kamran Javed. Once the students reached, they were greeted by Cisco employees and were taken to the auditorium for a presentation about brief introduction on Cisco. The presenters discussed Cisco not only being a manufacturer of routers and switches, but also having involved themselves in Cyber Security, Cloud Computing and much more concepts in the recent past. Later, the students were taken on a tour inside Cisco HQ to discuss how Cisco aids technological advancements. Cisco employees demonstrated how, a doctor could attend a person in a remote location with equipment powered by Cisco, which included a heartbeat monitor, scale etc. Cisco also demonstrated powering heat maps through beacons and routers, which were used to track human activity in malls. Through this activity, malls could determine individual whereabouts. This information also helped in knowing different places to post advertisements so as to gain maximum exposure. Finally, the students were gathered in a virtual classroom where the faculty was being projected by a smart camera which would be able to recognize, follow movement, and shift and view projections from another camera when the faculty is turned backwards. This environment is powered by Spark, an application Cisco created for smart communication. The students also visited the Innovation Lab at Cisco where they learnt about the emerging technologies being developed by Cisco such as Meraki, Spark and other such concepts. Students got a demo of how technologies work with a live hands-on session from Cisco. After the hands-on session, students interacted with the employees of Cisco to talk about how they can be better prepared for being skill ready for the emerging technologies.
