RED RIBBON WEEK

From October 16th -20th, CV celebrated Red Ribbon Week; this year’s theme: “Your Future is Key, so Stay Drug Free.” From an interactive vision impairment goggles exhibit, to library trivia, to a culminating assembly, students participated in a variety of activities to present a unified and visible commitment toward the creation of a drug-free America. Our ever-popular door decorating contest was a great way to wrap up the week; winning homerooms were judged on “Most Creative Door, “Best Representation of the Theme,” and “Best Overall Door.”

CHOIR CONCERT

Congratulations to our choir students, under the direction of Ms. Grace, with an amazing performance on October 12. Not only did we enjoy listening to our students, we became active participants in the concert! Ms. Grace did a fantastic job of showcasing cross-curricular activities from CV into the concert. Our Color and Design class displayed finished projects along with mini art workshops before the concert began. Members of the Spanish class were the masters of ceremony for the evening and we all had an extra treat in watching OCSA’s Las Estrellas Mariarchi Dancers perform! WOW!

AFTER SCHOOL SPORT ACTIVITIES

Our first trimester after school sporting events consisted of all OUSD’s middle schools playing soccer. We are so proud of our players, their sportsmanship and the fun time had on the field. Our band and cheer squad joined us on the home games along with rockets flying in the air when goals were made. Thank you for your flexibility in the season especially with practice and game times changing due to unforeseen weather and the Canyon Fire 2. Thank you for your support and cheering our players on!

8TH GRADE DANCE

Our first 8th grade middle school NEON dance was a hit on November 3! Aside from dancing, many students participated by having their face painted in neon colors, having caricatures made or playing games for raffle tickets to win prizes. Thank you to our leadership students, our activities directors, Ms. Matthews & Mr. Babnick, dance chaperones, and parent volunteers for all your hard work and effort. A fun time was had by all!

OC SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT- Important Message

An important message from the Orange County Sheriff’s Department:

“Due to numerous complaints from area residents and business owners in Villa Park shopping center, the City of Villa Park has asked the Orange County Sheriff’s Department to increase patrols for students loitering in the Villa Park shopping center. Existing laws, such as Villa Park Municipal Code 5-11 (Loitering) and Penal Code 272(a)(2) (Failure to provide parental supervision) will be enforced when appropriate.

Students who choose to patronize the local businesses in the Villa Park area are reminded to be respectful to business owners and other shoppers. Parents are reminded to utilize the supervision already in place at Cerro Villa Middle School on late start days. The Villa Park shopping center is not an appropriate location for before school drop off and after school pick up of your students.”

FREE PUBLIC EDUCATION

Section 5 of Article IX of the California Constitution guarantees students a “free and appropriate public education”. The State Supreme Court concluded in the 1984 case of Hartzell v. Connell, “that all educational activities carried on by public school districts, extracurricular as well as curricular, must be without cost to the students who participate in such activities”. This same ruling found that “mandatory fees for participating in such extra-curricular activities as drama, music, and athletic competition were illegal under the State constitution”. Furthermore, the State Supreme Court also rejected the argument that “fees could be charged as long as the district waived fees for students who were financially unable to pay”. I would like to assure you that Cerro Villa Middle School does not engage in a “pay for play” system.

DONATION

A special thank you and much appreciation to the members of the Orange County

Scroll Saw Association! They visited our STEM lab and met with our STEM teacher,

Mr. Baker, on October 30th to see our lab. They have graciously donated to our lab a

new scroll saw!

As we near the close of the first trimester, we look forward to maintaining our focus on academic achievement. May you and your family have a rewarding, safe, and relaxing upcoming holiday season! Thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,

Lisa Ogan
