From the Principal

Dear families,

The news has been busy with terrible news of violence and tragedy in recent days, in London,

in Syria, and in Melbourne among others.

It is always a shock to realise this can happen in places where we would normally expect to

be safe, and free.

Amidst the tragedy though, again and again we see that there are ideas behind the action.

These actions are not the result of mob wars or crimes of impulse, or payback in a moment of

rage. No, these actions are motivated by ideas that are based in ideologies. The perpetrators

have a set of beliefs that inspire the radical action they take.

While we rightly recoil from such extreme actions, the truth is we all have a set of beliefs; a set

of ideas that fit together more or less consistently. For many people, they borrow bits and

pieces from various worldviews and assemble our own pieces into an order, or more

accurately a mosaic. But it’s not something we usually think deeply about.

Those convictions just bubble along in the background until an issue or idea brings it into focus

for us – often without thinking too much about it. Like acts of terrorism.

Not all of our own ideas fit together well as a complete picture, but they have a certain

usefulness – a utility that works in certain situations, or maybe help us feel better under certain

circumstances. When a belief system does form a complete picture it can be said to be a

worldview.

One of the cherished beliefs I think we would all share is the idea of freedom. Freedom to live,

work, create, own property, say what we think, and believe what we want. But the friction

arises when one set of convictions clashes with another.

and will also be there tomorrow. If your students are missing any items

please look on the rack. Items which are named are returned to their

owner but with un-named items this is not possible.

For Christians though, freedom is not just freedom to do whatever we want (which is more like anarchy). Freedom is perhaps better

expressed as Liberty, which has a certain noble quality about it, a moral excellence. And moral excellence is not an abstract concept,

it is in turn based on an absolute standard - the nature, character and goodness of God.

As an aside, where does moral goodness arise in worldviews that do not believe in God? And is such a standard fixed, or

changeable? Where might that lead?

So the freedom we talk about is a liberty to live our lives fully and fairly according to the healthy boundaries that God has established as

part of his original design and purpose.

We have begun bringing in changes to the policies and procedures in our College that reflect this idea of liberty. However, l iberty relies on

that moral self-regulation that puts responsibility back on the individual rather than waiting for an authority to enforce it from above.

So take for example our uniform policy with respect to hair. We wanted to give a certain liberty and freedom to be able to self manage

the freedom to wear hair responsibly. But we are noticing that some are now taking that liberty as a licence for moving away from the

clearly stated “be natural in appearance, tone and colouring” and “be tidy, complement a natural appearance, not draw undue

attention to the individual”.

We also find this expressed in our fourth ‘Quality of an MNCC student’

“A Well Presented person takes pride in their appearance, wears uniform on correct days, is clean, is well groomed, and keeps to

the uniform standards.

By all means enjoy the freedom we rightly are entitled to, but do so according to the liberty within this community to self-manage the

standards we have established and aspire to.

And with that understanding, please do not be offended when we ask for students to fix or alter hair styles that do in fact

draw undue attention to the individual. Your Servant

Matt Paterson
