CLOUD INTELLIGENCE FOR HYBRIDS
This auto manufacturer was testing a fleet of hybrid
electric vehicles at their facilities. Each vehicle was
outfitted with sensors capturing roughly 100 pieces
of data about itself. We proposed to transmit test
data to a single collection point, encrypt it, and
relay it over the internet to a data warehouse in the
cloud. We would then capture, decrypt, transform,
and load the data for engineers to examine using
MicroStrategy reporting and analytics tools. With this
solution, the company avoided what would otherwise
have been a yearlong implementation effort.

BI PERFORMANCE IN HARDWARE
Over 16,000 home improvement store employees
needed to review key performance indicators critical
to business operations. To minimize database impact,
we opted to build the dashboards on Intelligent
Cubes with in-memory relational online analytical
processing (ROLAP). As a result, store managers
enjoyed reliable access to hundreds of metrics and
information from dozens of reports, with query
response times four times faster than expected. This
high level of performance encouraged managers
to make BI a part of their everyday workflow.

MOBILE INTELLIGENCE FOR MULTIMEDIA
This communication firm needed more mobility for its
executive BI users, but had doubts about whether it
was feasible for the small iPhone screen. We developed
an application that enabled business users to select
a specific business unit, magazine, TV network, or
other property. With this application, managers could
connect to the internal company network and view
related financial reports and graphs. In the end, all
concerns were quelled when everyone saw how the
right application can make screen size irrelevant.

BI ADOPTION IN SOCIAL NETWORKING
A social media company’s employees had little
patience for manuals and eight-hour training
classes. In this fast-moving environment, how could
MicroStrategy make the new BI system “known,
successful, and loved”? We began by targeting
groups whose use of BI could have maximum impact
to the business. Then we created short, engaging
lessons in a variety of media and embedded them
in key forums, such as internal wikis and orientation
classes for new hires. This “just in time” approach
to training enabled users to get relevant guidance at

CENTER OF EXCELLENCE IN TECHNOLOGY SERVICES
This IT services provider was deeply involved in a long-
term project to modernize a customer’s technology
infrastructure. With hundreds of thousands of
computers, servers, and other assets to replace, the
company needed a way to track all the associated
activity. MicroStrategy’s approach was to build a BI
center from scratch. We defined key roles, processes,
and governance standards. Next, we set up supporting
technology and identified ways to close gaps in the
center’s capabilities. In the end, the company had a
BI operation capable of providing timely, data-driven
insights to the rest of the enterprise, along with a
stepwise plan to further evolve their BI competency.

With over a million fans, this apparel retailer’s
Facebook page was a popular success. Still, conversion
rates from their social media promotions lagged
behind those of email promotions. MicroStrategy
created a customer-oriented iPhone application that
integrated with the retailer’s loyalty program. With
this, management gained a better understanding
of consumer demographics and behavior,
enabling them to craft promotions that more

LOSS PREVENTION IN SUPERMARKETS
Prompted by their industry’s typically thin margins,
this fast-growing supermarket operator decided to
tighten controls around employee theft. But the
audit department had difficulty getting the detail
they needed to be effective. In just two weeks,
MicroStrategy designed a solution using highly
complex scenarios capable of analyzing data at the
lowest level of detail. For the first time, auditors
could examine all transactional data and spot
behavioral anomalies without having to personally
visit each store. The result? Auditors became more
proactive in identifying potential fraudulent activity,
taking corrective action sooner while preserving
the privacy of employees not under suspicion.
