What is Microsoft Surface?

Microsoft Surface is a revolutionary multi-touch computer.

It responds to natural hand gestures and real-world objects,

People can interact with digital content in a simple and intuitive way.

With a large, horizontal user interface,Surface offers a unique gathering place where multiple users can collaboratively and simultaneously interact with data and each other.

OVERVIEW

Milan is the code name of Microsoft Surface.

 Surface turns an ordinary

tabletop into a vibrant, dynamicsurface.

Manipulating digital content using hand gestures, motions

and physical objects .

It has the ability to recognizephysical objects that haveidentification tags like bar

codes.

HISTORY

2001: Microsoft researchers Steve Bathiche and Andy Wilsondeveloped idea of interactive table that could understand themanipulation of physical pieces.

2003: 1st prototype model named T 1w hich is based on an IKEA

table w as born. Team saw  the value of the surface computer beyond simply gaming and began to favor those applications that took advantage of the unique ability of Surface to recognizephysical objects placed on the table.

K ey capabilities of Microsoft

Surface«.

Direct interaction. Users cangrab digital information withtheir hands and interact withcontent on-screen by touch and

gesture ± without using amouse or keyboard. Multi-user experience. The

large, horizontal, 30 inchdisplay makes it easy for

several people to gather andinteract together with MicrosoftSurface - providing acollaborative, face-to-facecomputing experience.

Page 8: Microsoft's Milan surface Presentation

 Multi-touch. MicrosoftSurface responds to many

points of contactsimultaneously - not just fromone finger, as with a typicaltouch screen, but fromdozens of contact points at

once. Object recognition. Users

can place physical objects onthe screen to trigger differenttypes of digital responses ±

providing for a multitude of applications and the transfer of digital content to mobiledevices.

How it works««««

 Multi touch technology

Microsoft Surface is based on theWindow s Vista SP 1 operating system

It has a 360 -degree user interface

30 -inch reflective surface w ith a XGADLP projector underneath the surfacew hich projects an image onto its

underside

Four cameras in the machine'shousing record reflections of infrared light from objects and humanfingertips on the surface.

T he surface is capable of Object recognition

Object/finger orientation

recognition.

T racking

Multi-touch

Multi-user

Users can interact with themachine by touching or  dragging their fingertips and objects such as paintbrushesacross the screen, or by placing

and moving placed objects.

T his paradigm of interactionwith computers is known as aNatural User Interface(NUI)

Page 12: Microsoft's Milan surface Presentation

T he technology allows non-digital objects to be used as input devices.

In using cameras for input, the system does not rely on restrictiveproperties required of conventional touch screen or touchpad

devices such as the capacitance, electrical resistance, or temperature of the tool used .

T he computer's "vision" is created by a near-infrared, 850-nanometer-wavelength LED light source aimed at the surface.

When an object touches the tabletop, the light is reflected tomultiple infrared cameras with a net resolution of 1280 x 960,allowing it to sense, and react to items touching the tabletop.

CONS

Not portable and very expensive.

Privacy - Open for many to view .

Screen Visibility - Glare, finger prints/dirt and human interactionobscuring interface.

Poor Accuracy - Fat fingers arenot as accurate as a mouse or stylus.

Fatigue - Reaching across thetable often can cause the arms toache.

Objects needs to be tagged (domino tags or RFIDs).

FUT URE INNOVATIONS

Surface will continue to be sold to and used by restaurants, retail, leisure and public entertainment venues.

Computer scientists hope to incorporate this kind of

technology in peoples· daily lives« Future goals are to surround people with intelligent surfaces (look up recipes on your kitchen counter or table, control TV with coffee table, etc.

Eventually every household may have one in place of their everyday coffee table .

CONCLUSION

Microsoft Surface is the future of computers.

Fundamentally changes the way we interact with technology.

Surface takes existing technology and presents it in a new way. It isn't simply a touch screen, but more of a touch-grab-move-slide-resize-and- place-objects-on-top-of-screen, and this opens up new possibilities that weren't there before.
