WDA Student Chapter Guidelines

OBJECTIVES: The objectives of the WDA Student Chapters are based on the mission of WDA, “Our mission is to acquire, disseminate, and apply knowledge of the health and diseases of wild animals in relation to their biology, conservation, and interactions with human and domestic animals.” More specifically, Student Chapters should aim to:

• Educate students interested in wildlife health and disease about career options, job qualifications and education, externships, volunteer, and research opportunities

• Enhance skills of students interested in wildlife health and disease through lectures, workshops, conferences, or field trips

• Connect students interested in wildlife health and disease to mentors in WDA and the profession through the faculty advisor and guest lecturers

FACULTY ADVISOR: Each chapter must have a faculty advisor who is a current WDA member.

OFFICERS: Officers are selected by members of the chapter and must be Student Members of WDA.

MEMBERSHIP: Student chapters are composed of undergraduate, graduate, and professional students interested in the field of wildlife disease and health. WDA membership is not a prerequisite for membership in a WDA Student Chapter. However, make sure that you advertise the advantages of WDA membership to your chapter members (discount on conference fees, student awards at conferences, WDA newsletter, mentoring program etc.). The number of student WDA members within the chapter is one of the election criteria in the Student Chapter Grant Selection process.

DUES: The dues structure of each student chapter is determined by that chapter. Revenue from dues is to be spent by the chapter in keeping with the objectives of Student Chapters of WDA.

REPORTS TO WDA:

Student Chapter Progress Report: o needs to be filled in and submitted annually. o Submission deadline: April 30th! o If you don’t send in a progress report your chapter will be considered inactive and won’t

be eligible for Student Chapter Grants. o Template available in the student section of the WDA website: ‘Student Chapter

Progress Report_2018.docx’

Financial Report: o needs to be filled in and submitted annually only, if you applied for a Student Chapter

Grant in the previous year!o Submission deadline: April 30th! o If you don’t send in a Financial Report your chapter will be considered inactive and won’t

be eligible for Student Chapter Grants.o Financial report describes how WDA Grant was spent.o Template available in the student section of the WDA website: ‘Student Chapter Grant

Application and Financial report_2018.docx’ (same form as Student Chapter Grant Application)

Student Chapter Grant Application:o needs to be filled in and submitted only, if your Student Chapter would like to apply for a

WDA Student Chapter Grant. o Submission deadline: April 30th! o WDA Student Chapter Grant are usually between 200 – 500 USD per chaptero Awarded annuallyo Template available in the student section of the WDA website: ‘Student Chapter Grant
