Introducing the SUR40

The Future of Interactivity

• Microsoft Surface is a commercial computing platform that enables people to use touch and real world objects to share digital content at the same time. • The Surface platform consists of software and hardware products that combine vision based

multitouch PC hardware, 360-degree multiuser application design, and Windows software to create a natural user interface (NUI) for users.

What is Surface?

• Microsoft Surface 1.0, shipped to customers in 2008 as an end-to-end solution with Microsoft producing and selling the combined hardware/software platform. • Microsoft and Samsung partnered to announce the current version of Surface, the Samsung SUR40 for

Microsoft Surface (“SUR40”), at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in 2011.• Samsung is now shipping the new SUR40 hardware with the Microsoft Surface 2.0 software platform

to customers. • Microsoft also provides the free Microsoft Surface 2.0 Software Development Kit (SDK) for developers

to create NUI touch applications for Surface and Windows 7 touch PCs.

• In computing, a natural user interface, or NUI, is the common term used by designers to refer to a user interface that is effectively invisible to users, or becomes invisible with successive learned interactions. • The word natural is used because most computer interfaces use artificial control devices whose

operation has to be learned. • A NUI relies on a user being able to quickly transition from novice to expert. • While the interface requires learning, that learning is eased through design which gives the user the

feeling that they are instantly and continuously successful. • This can be aided by technology which allows users to carry out relatively natural motions, movements

or gestures that they quickly discover control the computer application or manipulate the on-screen content.

NUI – The Next Generation of User Interface

• When Bill Buxton, a principal researcher at Microsoft Research, was asked about the iPhone's interface, he responded "Multi-touch technologies have a long history. To put it in perspective, the original work undertaken by my team was done in 1984, the same year that the first Macintosh computer was released, and we were not the first."• Multi-touch is a technology which could enable a natural user interface. However, most UI toolkits

used to construct interfaces executed with such technology are traditional GUI interfaces.• One of the first examples of NUI technology is the work done by Jefferson Han on multi-touch

interfaces.

• In a demonstration at TED in 2006, he showed a variety of means of interacting with on-screen content using both direct manipulations and gestures. • For example, to shape an on-screen glutinous mass,

Jeff literally 'pinches' and prods and pokes it with his fingers. • In a GUI interface for a design application for example,

a user would use the metaphor of 'tools' to do this, for example, selecting a prod tool, or selecting two parts of the mass that they then wanted to apply a 'pinch' action to. • Han showed that user interaction could be much more

intuitive by doing away with the interaction devices that we are used to and replacing them with a screen that was capable of detecting a much wider range of human actions and gestures.

• Microsoft Surface takes similar ideas to the next logical level. • It provides a natural method for how users interact with content, but adds in the ability for the device

to optically recognize objects placed on top of it. • In this way, users can trigger actions on the computer through the same gestures and motions as Jeff

Han's touchscreen allowed, but also objects become a part of the control mechanisms. • So for example, when you place a wine glass on the table, the computer recognizes it as such and

displays content associated with that wine glass. • Placing a wine glass on a table is a natural thing for a person to do, hence it fits as part of a natural

user interface.

• Multi-Touch and Multi-User• The Samsung SUR40 can recognize and react to more than 50 points of contact simultaneously. • Several users at once can use the SUR40, for heightened collaboration and connection. • Groups of people can interact with multimedia content, play games, create special effects, and

manipulate art and photographs in truly unique and compelling ways. • With its multi-touch and multi-user capabilities, the SUR40 will completely change the way people

communicate with one another.

• Physical Object Recognition• The Samsung SUR40 can be customized to recognize unique surface tags and even to detect physical

objects placed on its surface, to trigger different types of digital responses. • For example, room keys or payment cards can access guest services and facility information. • Or an item in a retail setting can prompt product information, allow comparison with similar items,

and suggest complementary items.

• Digital Device Interaction• Applications can be installed on the SUR40 that will allow it to share information between internet- or Bluetooth-

enabled devices. • When a mobile device or mobile computer is placed on the SUR40, for example, content could be dragged and

dropped from the device to the SUR40, and vice versa.

• PixelSense™ Technology • Microsoft PixelSense™ technology is what enables the object recognition capabilities of the SUR40. • By utilizing PixelSense™, the SUR40 recognizes and visualizes objects placed on its surface by actually seeing and

responding to the objects on the screen. • This remarkable technology also allows the device to be just 4" thin, for greater versatility.
