Choosing between User and Device CALs
Device CALs User CALs
Economic factors • Less expensive to acquire
Device CALs
• Fewer devices than users,
e.g. call center, factory floor
• Less expensive to acquire
User CALs
• Fewer users than devices,
e.g. information worker with
multiple devices (desktop,
notebook, and smartphone)
Ease of Management • Easier to track devices
• Asset management systems
are set up to track devices
• Easier to track users
• Purchasing systems are tightly
linked with HR processes

External Users
External Users means users that are not the
customer’s or the customer’s affiliates’ employees,
onsite contractors or onsite agents.
External users may be licensed with individual CALs
or an External Connector license.
An External Connector License (per server) permits
access to the server software by any number of
external users.
• Examples for available EC licenses: Windows Server
2008 R2 EC, Exchange Server 2010 Standard EC.
• EC licenses are not available for SQL Server 2012
and SharePoint Server.
SharePoint Server 2010 for Internet Sites (fIS)
All content, information, and applications
accessible by internal users must also be
accessible to external users.
Customers wishing to consolidate their
SharePoint Server needs under a single
deployment may acquire licenses for both
products, assign those licenses to the same
server, and use the same running instance of the
software simultaneously under both licenses.
However, customers must acquire CALs as
required under the SharePoint Server 2010 use
rights to access content limited to internal users.
SQL Server 2012
Licensing Model Per Core: SQL Server 2012 Enterprise and Standard
Determining the number of licenses required
for SQL Server 2012 Enterprise or Standard
running in the physical OSE:
The customer may license based on
all of the physical cores on the server.
The number of licenses required equals the
number of physical cores on the server
(minimum of 4).
Licensing Model Server / CAL: SQL Server 2012 BI and Standard
SQL Server 2012 Business Intelligence
can only be licensed in the Server/CAL model.
SQL Server 2012 Standard can be licensed per
core or alternatively in the Server/CAL model.
SQL Server Standard Edition should be
deployed in the Server/CAL model
in scenarios where customers can easily
count users/devices and the total
licensing costs are lower than using the
per core licensing model.
Management Servers
System Center 2012
System Center 2012 Standard and Datacenter
Editions are for managing servers (not clients).
Licenses are required only for servers being
managed. No additional licenses are needed
for management servers or SQL Server
technology.
Each license covers up to two physical
processors.
Each license of SC 2012 Standard permits
managing 2 virtual OSEs. Each license of SC
2012 Datacenter permits managing an
unlimited number of OSEs on premises.
