Release of Basic Assessment Report for proposed Saldanha Aquaculture Development Zone (ADZ) for public review 

The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries  (DAFF) aims  to develop and  facilitate aquaculture  in SouthAfrica to supply food, create jobs in marginalised coastal communities and contribute to national income. Saldanha Bay is a highly productive marine environment and has an established aquaculture industry, with potential for growth.DAFF thus proposes to establish and obtain Environmental Authorisation (EA) for a sea‐based ADZ in Saldanha Bay,comprising of several precincts. 

SRK Consulting (South Africa) Pty Ltd (SRK) was appointed to undertake the Basic Assessment (BA) process requiredin terms of the National Environmental Management Act 107 of 1998, as amended (NEMA) and the EIA Regulations,2014.  

Following the release of a Background Information Document on 9 June 2016 and the Project Definition summary on5 August 2016, the BA Report is now being released for public comment until 10 March 2017. Stakeholder comments received in response to the above two documents were considered in the impact assessment and proposed mitigation presented in the BA Report.  

Hardcopies of the BA Report are available for public review at the Saldanha Public Library, Langebaan Public Libraryand SRK’s Cape Town office. The report can also be downloaded from SRK’s website: http://www.srk.co.za/en/za‐saldanha‐bay‐aquaculture‐development‐zone.  The  executive  summary  of  the  BA  Report  is  attached  for  yourinformation.  

Stakeholders are also invited to attend a public open day on 23 February 2017 at the Langebaan Auditorium at anytime between 3 pm and 6 pm.

The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries  (DAFF) aims  to develop and  facilitate aquaculture  in SouthAfrica to supply food, create jobs in marginalised coastal communities and contribute to national income. Saldanha Bay is a highly productive marine environment and has an established aquaculture industry, with potential for growth.DAFF thus proposes to establish and obtain Environmental Authorisation (EA) for a sea‐based ADZ in Saldanha Bay,comprising of several precincts. 

SRK Consulting (South Africa) Pty Ltd (SRK) was appointed to undertake the Basic Assessment (BA) process requiredin terms of the National Environmental Management Act 107 of 1998, as amended (NEMA) and the EIA Regulations,2014.  

Following the release of a Background Information Document on 9 June 2016 and the Project Definition summary on5 August 2016, the BA Report is now being released for public comment until 10 March 2017. Stakeholder comments received in response to the above two documents were considered in the impact assessment and proposed mitigation presented in the BA Report.  

Hardcopies of the BA Report are available for public review at the Saldanha Public Library, Langebaan Public Libraryand SRK’s Cape Town office. The report can also be downloaded from SRK’s website: http://www.srk.co.za/en/za‐saldanha‐bay‐aquaculture‐development‐zone.  The  executive  summary  of  the  BA  Report  is  attached  for  yourinformation.
