Light Microscope

• Microscope is an instrument used to see images that are too small for the naked eye.

• Zacharias Janssen invented the first compound light microscope

Compound light microscope uses multiple lenses to observe and focus a specimen.

• Robert Hooke used a compound light microscope to observe cork. He named his observation CELLS.

• Leeuwnhoek invented the first single lens microscope.

• He observed and drew single-celled organisms in pond water.

Objective Lenses

• Important due to resolution- ability to distinguish between two objects.

• Eyepiece Magnification is 10x• Objective Lenses are 4x, 10x, 40x• Total Magnification is found by multiplying

the eyepiece magnification and the objective magnification

•10x times 4x = 40x

Rules of Microscope Use• When removing or adding slide always be on low

power. • Start with low power and move up – use coarse

adjustment.• Higher powers only use fine adjustment• May need to increase light as you move up in

magnification• Keep in mind objects are inversed by the

microscope – so moving left is really moving right
