Micronic offers a comprehensive

range of non-coded, alphanumeric

and 2D coded (Data-Matrix or

TraXis) tube ranges in a variety of

materials, volume sizes and top and

bottom profiles. The standard

product range comprises of 0.50ml,

0.75ml, 1.10ml, 1.40ml, 2.00ml,

2.50ml, 6.00ml and 7.50ml tubes.

Manufactured up to or exceeding

industry leading strict tolerances,

the precision and tube-to-tube

consistency of Micronic products

maximises operational uptime when

used with automated cherry picking

and handling systems.

The 0.50ml, 0.75ml, 1.10ml, 1.40ml

and 2.00ml tubes are available in

several coding formats and can be

used with a plug style cap (TPE or

EVA) or a screw cap closure (the

2.50ml tube comes only with a plug

style cap and the 6.00ml tube only

with a screw cap) in turn enabling

long-term secure sample storage

even at ultra low temperatures. The

tubes have an inner V- or U-bottom.

The tubes for plug style caps have

double rings located inside at the

top, which were specially designed

to hold the TPE or EVA caps

securely in place during freeze and

thaw cycles.

Micronic offers tube racks based on the SBS-footprint. The Loborack-96, Roborack-96 and Comorack-96 can hold 96 tubes, minimizing the space required to store them. The Arctic Rack-24 is specially designed to store 6.00ml tubes.

The 2D coded tubes can be decoded

with our 2D code readers, such as

the Tracxer Code Reader RS210

which reads 96 tubes in 5 seconds

or the Single Tube Reader TS201 to

simply decode one tube at the time.

For high-throughput applications,

Micronic offers a camera based

system, which can decode 96 tubes

within 1 second.

Micronic offers a variety of Screw

Cap tubes in the volume range of

0.50ml, 0.75ml, 1.10ml, 1.40ml and

2.00ml. Most of these tubes are

available non-coded, alphanumeric

coded and 2D coded (TraXis or

Data-Matrix). The tubes (including

the code area) are manufactured of

the highest-purity polypropylene.

The 2D codes are encrypted with a

laser in the polypropylene code area,

guaranteeing the highest resistance

to solvent attack and ensuring a

reliable code reading. The Screw

Cap tubes are available with an inner

V- or U-bottom.

The Screw Caps are available in eight different colours: White, Red, Amber, Purple, Green, Yellow, Blue and Transparent Blue. Micronic Screw Caps feature silicon “O” rings around their base to allow for the tightest seal possible. The one turn capping ensures a tight sealing that is also ideal for sample transportation.

The Screw Cap tubes are

compatible with both the Micronic

Screw Caps and TPE Caps (TPE

Caps also fit Screw Cap tubes).

Most of the Screw Cap tubes are available in Bulk, refill carrier-96, Loborack-96 and Roborack-96. Both racks have the ‘Twist-Lock’ feature to prevent turning during screw capping. Available features

identified with a permanently laser

etched 2D Data-Matrix code on the

with flat center. At just 25.6mm tall

can save 40% of the freezer space

compared to other 0.50ml screw

The Micronic Glass tube range

provides a storage solution for

samples stored in chlorinated

solvents, DMSO and other high

chemicals. For the secure tracking of

your samples the glass tubes are

available with a laser etched, 2D

Data-Matrix code on the ceramic

bottom of the tube. This ensures

traceability when using glass tubes in

your lab.

The 2D Data-Matrix coded tubes can

be decoded with several 2D code

readers: A Single Rack Scanner

(MVS) to decode 96 tubes in 15

seconds, and a single tube scanner to

simply decode one tube at a time. For

high throughput applications, we offer

a CCD camera based system,

decoding 96 tubes within just 1

second.

The glass tube design is developed in

conjunction with our users. Micronic

has more than 25 years of experience

in the life science market.

The tube has an inner V-bottom

allowing for maximum sample

recovery and the lowest dead

volume. The tube top is specially

designed to securely hold the TPE

caps for glass tubes. The tube with

a cap gives an integer solution in

Micronic TPE LyoCaps are used for sealing sample storage tubes in a 96 tube format. Sample storage tubes from Micronic are available in a wide range of different codes and volumes. Manufactured from chemically resistant and hydrophobic polymer, each TPE LyoCap is multi-pierceable, ensuring long-term sample integrity. The LyoCaps are available in Capcluster format and are designed for the sealing of Micronic tubes in turn allowing water vapour to escape from the tubes during the Lyophilisation process (water escapes through the vents in the caps). Whether applying single caps directly to tubes or when used with an automated capping system, Micronic caps provide the maximum sample integrity for long-term storage.

Micronic’s unique sample storage TPE caps are highly solvent resistant. The ultra-low extractable material eliminates the possibility of sample contamination from the TPE LyoCap. The LyoCapcluster-96 allows you to seal 96 tubes in one turn. After capping, remove the retaining foil to leave each tube individually capped. The recommended temperature range is -80°C to +80°C, and individual caps (without the retaining foil) up to temperatures of +121°C. Available features

In conjunction with its customers, Micronic has developed a number of decapping products for the manual removal of individual TPE Caps or Screw Caps. All the manual decappers secure a quick and convenient removal, as the caps are removed smoothly each time. The range of manual decappers is available in several formats. The Manual Decapper-1, which is made from polypropylene, is designed to remove individual TPE Caps. The Polypropylene Manual Decapper-8 removes individual caps in a row of eight or one Capband-8 at a time. Available for the removal of caps on lightly frozen samples is the Aluminum Decapper-8. The Aluminum Decapper-8 was created after a customer requested a Decapper-8 that is sturdy enough to handle frozen tubes. For the manual removal (and also capping) of Screw Caps, Micronic designed the Screw Cap tool for easy one turn capping.

The VolumeCheck determines the

sample volume in a well or tube

inside a SBS standard rack or

Sheffield University has recently acquired state of the art bio-repository facilities as a result of phased refurbishment of the Henry Wellcome Research Laboratories at the school of medicine and biomedical sciences. The project is supported by a grant from the Wolfson foundation and HEFCE, through the university’s recent SRIF-3 bid. The bio-repository is a core facility for the medical school and will provide researchers with premium quality samples for translational research. Each blood sample from parents recruited into a variety of clinical trials, can be processed from a single tube into the standard 96 Micronic tube format, using bespoke automation designed by Labman Automation.

The main exercise will be to split serum and plasma samples into 100ul aliquots, thus ensuring the most efficient use of each sample, whilst removing the need for unnecessary freeze thaw cycles. A Micronic screw cap ensures safe storage in either mechanical or liquid nitrogen freezers. It is anticipated that the samples in the bio-repository will be stored for a minimum of 15 years. Therefore the utmost importance has been placed on maintaining sample quality and traceability.

For efficient retrieval of samples, the bio-repository database records a plethora of information on the location of each Micronic tube. Each sample has a unique identity and address which comprises of barcodes, colour codes and geographical location. Each Micronic tube has a unique 2D barcode, and has coordinates within the rack; a unique barcode identifier on the rack; and a unique identifier for the location within the freezer/nitrogen tanks, where racks are stored. In its present form the bio-repository database contains two main components. The first, tracks the movement of the processed samples from the robot to a temporary storage area in Sheffield. The second, extends the functionality of the database and tracks the movement of samples from the temporary storage area in Sheffield to a long term storage area. Using a unique tube coding system called TraXis from Micronic BV, The

Animal Sciences Group (Lelystad, The Netherlands) has been able to

significantly improve the absolute traceability, throughput and long term

storage integrity of labelled samples going through their laboratory.

The Animal Sciences Group is the central Dutch institute for Animal Science and Health covering veterinary, zoo technical and biomedical research. With over 700 highly qualified staff and unique research facilities The Animal Sciences

Group (http://www.asg.wur.nl/UK/) is internationally renowned for its contributions to the control of animal diseases, and the development of safe and healthy products of animal origin. With developed expertise in handling, analysing and storing animal test samples The Animal Sciences Group were chosen to screen all Dutch cows over 30 months going to slaughter. However the need to be 100% sure in identifying the expected 10-100 positive results from 700,000 samples annually drew ID Lelystad to re-evaluate and upgrade their sample storage and retrieval system. The Animal Sciences Group selected to implement TraXis from Micronic BV as it offered the ability to uniquely identify and then retrieve positive samples without any fear of lost or incorrectly identified samples. Moreover the ability to seamlessly integrate TraXis into a fully automated system including incorporating data into a LIMS met the Animal Sience Group`s challenging need to provide confirmed assay results within 36 hours and having to process 200 samples per hour. Whilst traditional sample storage systems are extremely accurate problems can occur due to human errors during manipulation and removal. If a tube is incorrectly replaced or a bar code is abraded or drops off, the tube is effectively lost within the system. The Micronic TraXis system comprises of a uniquely identified tube, a polypropylene tube rack, multi – piercable resealing cap and a range of specially designed readers to allow fast and accurate identification of the TraXis tubes. Manufactured under exacting Class 7 clean room conditions from ultra-pure grade polypropylene TraXis coded tubes provide a unique 2-dimensional code precisely located at the bottom of each tube. Micronic (www.micronic.com) has received a major 12-month call-off order for sample storage tubes from the Rutgers University Cell & DNA Repository (Piscataway, NJ, USA). After an open evaluation process - Rutgers selected Micronic

0.75 ml and 1.4ml tubes together with coloured TPE caps to provide high integrity, long-term storage of samples at -80° C. Rutgers University Cell and DNA Repository (RUCDR) plays a key role in research aimed at understanding the genetic causes of common, complex diseases. RUCDR activities will enable gene discovery leading to diagnoses, treatments and,

eventually, cures for these diseases. RUCDR assists researchers throughout the world by providing the highest quality biomaterials, technical consultation, and logistical support. RUCDR is the largest university based repository in the world. explores the problems of biobanking with Dutch bio-sample storage experts, Micronic.

Some Biobanks hopes to collect biological samples from 500,000 people over the next four years to help determine the causes of many fatal conditions.

To do so biological samples, such as blood, urine or tissues need to be collected and the accurate archiving of these is of the utmost importance if the data is to have any relevance. Pharmaceutical companies are more commonly storing samples from patients who are involved with clinical trials, as this can help find genetic reasons for specific reactions to drugs.

AstraZeneca recently published an article in The Pharmacogenomics Journal (15 May 2007, p1-10) that describes a retrospective case-control pharmacogenetic study to determine the cause of an adverse event (AE) associated with taking the now-withdrawn Exanta (ximelagatran).

This study would not have been able to determine the genetic cause of the AE if AstraZeneca had not had access to biological samples from those patients taking the drug. According to Remi van Liempt of Micronic, a biological sample can cost €1000 to store and therefore it is imperative that the sample is stored in a safe and fully traceable manner. Once the sample integrity is ensured by storage in a tube that will not leach plastic into the sample the next problem is ensuring that the sample can be correctly identified - even after being stored for several decades.

"Imagine how valuable a sample is after it has been stored for 20 years, researchers cannot risk such valuable assets with

inferior storage or labelling systems," said van Liempt.

Sample tubes need to be made from solvent resistant materials such as glass or polypropylene and the codes need to be solvent resistant to ensures that the code can not get washed off even if the sample vial is dropped in solvent. The type of material used for storing samples is important with black tubes ideal for storing light sensitive samples in and glass tubes useful for storing bioactive samples that could react with plastic tubes. To ensure no stray biological matter gets into the tubes sample tubes need to be manufactured in class 7 clean room facilities.

Micronic have developed a system that involves incorporating a laser etched 2D code to the bottom of a sample tube that ensures the code does not fade or peel off even when subjected to repeated handling and freeze-thaw cycles. Samples can also be labelled with RFID (radio frequency identification) tags that allow fast electronic sample identification although this approach can be too expensive for the larger state-run biobanks. Van Liempt explained that it was advantageous to store samples in individual tubes rather than in multi-well plates that contain multiple samples as it helps preserve samples that are not being studied in the plates. This is particularly important as biological samples are often stored at -80ºC and each freeze-thaw cycle will degrade the sample a little bit.

With the largest biobanks containing upwards of 14m samples, minimising the footprint of a rack of sample tubes is an issue, and van Liempt explained that Micronic's racks are all produced according to the internationally recognised Society of Biomolecular Screening (SBS) standard footprint. With Biobanks and pharmaceutical companies storing such huge numbers of samples ensuring the racks are compatible with automated sample handling systems is a necessity and Micronic's Sure-Shot contoured rack top increases productivity by allowing easier tube insertion and removal.
