Laboratory Notebook• Serves as your record of events that occurred

in the microbiology lab.

• For those students going into an Allied Health field, the laboratory notebook will help you develop organizational skills that will be necessary when documenting patient records.

• • Laboratory Notebooks will be graded for their

completeness, accuracy and neatness.

Disease Presentation and Mystery Microbe Projects

• Individuals or pairs of students will investigate current literature and websites about a variety of diseases.

• The Mystery Microbe Project (MM project) is a way for you to become a microbe detective

Midterms• Midterms will take place at the beginning of class. If

you are late to a test you will be given the remaining time given to all students to finish the exam. EX: If the exam is 1 hour and you come in 30 min into the exam you will be given the remaining 30 min to finish the test.

• In the form of short answer, multiple choice, true/false, short essay, long essay and case study questions

Final Exam• Like the midterms the final will also be a printed,

hard copy exam.

• Cumulative

• A cumulative final allows you to review the class material and further store concepts into your long term memory.

• You will be allowed to bring a "reference sheet" consisting of a single sided 8.5 x 11 in.

How Much Time do I need to Dedicate to Micro?

• Be prepared to spend at least 2 hours outside of class for every hour inside of class.

• You will be in class 6 hours a week and expected to study at least 12 more hours during the week.

Safety Statement• Do not eat, drink or smoke in the microbiology

lab. Note locations of the first aid kit, eye wash stations and gas shut-off valve.

• Store books and personal items in the cubbies at the end of each bench. The cubbies are much cleaner than the floor and help to keep your benchtop free of everything except your lab notebook and writing instrument.

Safety Statement• Secure long hair, beards and anything else that

may dangle to prevent a fire or contamination. Please wear only closed toed shoes to lab.

• Beware of flaming Bunsen burners, contaminated materials and test tube racks. It is easy to inadvertently reach over a culture or burner and cause a problem. Be especially mindful of the Bunsen burners since the flames are hard to see. Make sure to extinguish them when not in use.

Safety Statement• In the event of a fire, please help to turn off the

master gas-valve located in the front instructor’s cabinet. It is off when the lever is perpendicular to the line. (We haven’t had any fires yet, so please help to keep the fire free streak going.) If the fire is serious, don’t forget to call campus security (399-5023) or 911.

• In the event of chemical or microbial contact, wash the skin with soap and water; flush the eyes with water; notify your instructor.

Safety Statement• Report accidents and/or spills immediately. • Wear a lab coat or apron and/or glasses or

goggles when necessary.• Follow aseptic procedures:– Disinfect all work surfaces before AND after use– Flame wire inoculating loops prior to AND after use.– Keep all microbiological cultures and plates closed

when they are not in active use to prevent contamination.

– Test-tubes test-tube rack labeled AUTOCLAVE – Agar plates metal canister for plates labeled

AUTOCLAVE– Slides or swabs10% bleach in beakers– All contaminated items will be autoclaved before

they are disposed. – If you have any doubt of how to dispose of an item,

PLEASE ASK.
