During our 8-bit presentation you may recall that we used an example where Nick designed a watering system using a PIC. Here is what he designed. A simple PIC with a light detector and an output to control a water valve This was all well and good but in order to power the PIC or interface to a light sensor it is necessary for Nick to use analog products like power supply chip sets, op amps and comparators.

SAFETY ANDSECURITY

In order to simplify the analog products portfolio we can break them down into six major groups as seen on this slide:

First we have the thermal management group which consists of temperature sensors and automatic brushless dc motor controllers

Next we have the linear products, namely the op amps, comparators and programmable gain amplifiers

Microchip also makes power management products like linear regulators, switching regulators, charge pumps and so on

Mixed signal devices like delta sigma converters, energy measurement ICs, dual slope converters, DACs and digital potentiometers,

Interface products like standalone CAN, Ethernet and RF peripherals and finally Safety and security devices like smoke detectors and piezo electric drivers.

Thermal Management Solutions

Address industry’s thermal management issues Wide range of high-accuracy, Compact, low-

power, innovative products: Temperature measurement Over-/under-temperature monitoring Thermal calibration DC fan speed control DC fan fault detection

Sensor VOLTS

•Taking each of these categories let us discuss the Thermal management products:

•Microchip offers a wide range of highly accurate, compact and low power innovative products specially tied to powering and controling DC fans. When the temperature of a unit reaches a certain point, the DC fan is automatically turned on to cool the unit. When the unit has cooled to a certain point the DC motor is either slowed down or shut off. Speed control of the DC fan is thus possible. Over and under temperature monitor is also possible using the thermal management units.

In power management products (as opposed to the thermal management products we just spoke of) Microchip offers many digital and analog solutions. Low drop out regulators, switch mode power supply units, charge pumps, battery chargers etc are available all in high efficiency low power devices built on a small footprint on a highly robust and reliable platform. Most MCU based systems require a fixed regulated voltage to operate. Microchip offers many solutions to meet this need.

Sensor

As far as mixed signal solutions are concerned Microchip’s offers all the products necessary on the signal chain from the sensor to the MCU. Op amps and PGAs along with analog multiplexers and accurate voltage references, filters and high precession Analog to digital converters are available. All these products are highly integrated, so minimum external components are needed, they are low power and most operate rail to rail on low voltage lines. Again in most MCU based systems some interface to real world sensors is required and Microchip’s analog products help a customer interface the sensor to the MCU in the system.

MCU IrDA ProtocolCONTROLLER

OPTICALTRANSCEIVER

On the Interface solutions front, Microchip’s offers standalone interface products ready to be connected to automotive and industrial market segments. Using simple serial communication on the MCU end the interface products can easily be connected to CAN, LIN, Ethernet and wireless communication devices. You don’t have to wait till the interface peripheral is available on the MCU, using the standalone products you can enhance your existing design by interfacing it to more complex connectivity solutions.

Why Microchip Linear Products?

 One stop shopping

 One vendor qualifications

 Low Power design

 Rail to Rail outputs

 0V to 5V operations

So in summary Microchip’s analog products offer our customers a one stop shopping environment. In industries where qualification is required Microchips offers a single vendor qualification opportunity. Our analog products are designed to work at low power and low voltage. All analog products have rail to rail operation thereby increasing bandwidth and accuracy in your system. The analog products are designed to operate from 0 to 5 V. Thereby making it easy to interface to a 5V MCU based system.

Nick’s Challenge

Challenge:

During power outage

Reprogramming the watering system

Referring back to Nick’s watering system. The challenge we have Nick especially for his programmable unit design is: What if we lost all power to the unit. Would Nick have to reprogram his entire watering sequence again? Could he save his programmable parameters etc in non-volatile memory. So if he did have a power outage he could easily retrieve the data from EEPROM

Nick’s Solution Use Microchip’s SEEPROMs:

Save all programming data I2C and SPI interface 128 – 1M bit Wide range Packages: SOT23 –

TSSOP

New UNI/O: Need only 1 I/O to program

Microchip’s solution is to use serial EEPROMs. Using an SPI or I2C interface Nick can store 128 to 1 Mega bits of information on these very tiny SOT23 or TSSOP package serial eeproms. Serial interfaces offers a compact solution for Nick without taking up a lot of I/O pins. As we have seen before Microchip offers 6 and 8 pin PICs so I/O becomes even more scarce so to meet this challenge Microchip has come up with a unique single I/O technique to program and retrieve the data from the serial eeprom. This is called UNI/O and required only 1 I/O pin to program an retrieve serial data. It is also important to note that Microchip’s serial eeproms are guaranteed for 1Million read write cycles.

How to Select Microchip’s Products

That brings us to the end of Microchip’s Analog and Memory products.

As we have seen in Microchip’s portfolio, there are a lot of parts available. So it may be a little bit intimidating for a customer to select the right part for the assignment at hand. To help customer select the right product for their application, Microchip has come up with a solution on its website

MAPS

How to select the right microcontroller betweenmore than 500 products ?

How to easily find Microchip analog/memorycomponent given a set of electrical parameters or competitor part number ?

> Microchip Advanced Part Selector <

http://www.microchip.com/MAPS

MAPS exists as 2 versions :

 Online version (internet access necessary)

 Installable version on your PC

The solution is Microchip’s Advanced Part Selector commonly abbreviated as MAPS. The challenge is to select one MCU from over 500+ MCUs and also to select the right memory and analog products for the application. MAPS is available on our website at: www.microchip.com forward slash MAPS. The lead page gives you three choices to start with: microcontroller, analog and memory. Let us start with the Micro first…

18

MAPS (8/16/32 MCUs)• Enter technical features and find matching products.• Filters by family or prefix

Selecting Microcontroller, give you a page where you can now enter the features that you would like to see in the MCU of your choice. You can choose from 8, 16 or 32 bit products and a whole list of peripherals some which may be important to have, some a maybe and some not at all. Pull down tabs allow you to select these options and when you are satisfied you can view all the parts which meet these requirements. If you have too many options you may want to narrow you search using filters and narrowing your requirements down. When you are down to a handful of parts, you can do a side by side comparison between part as in the next slide ..

19

MAPS (8/16/32 MCUs)

Side by sidecomparison of up to 4 devices in parallelfor easy reference

Export to EXCEL

A side by side comparison allows you to get a better view of the parts and compare and contrast if one part is better than the other. Hopefully you will have narrowed your search down to one or two. At which point you can order samples or look at pricing.

20

MAPS (analog)

Clicking on the analog tab of MAPS you can search for Microchip parts based on certain requirements of your design or you may have a competitor’s part that you may want to replace. Either way you can search for analog part and do the same side by side comparison between parts, their parameters, specs etc. Once you are satisfied you can order samples

21

© 2006 Microchip Technology Incorporated. All Rights Reserved. Slide 21

MAPS (Memory)

Finally MAPS can be used to search for memory parts either from Microchip or a competitor.

In Summary MAPS makes it very easy for you to search and home in on the specific product that you need for your embedded application.
