MicronutrientTesting
Uses active peripheral lymphocytes instead of serum Measures the end point of DNA synthesis Reects nutrient status over the last 4-8 months Measures how micronutrients and antioxidants are actually functioning within the white blood cells Reects total metabolic function rather than isolated biochemical pathways Demonstrates the intracellular func tion of micronutrients simultaneously Gives physicians the ability to tailor treatment plans to each patient’s specic requirements rather than to “norms”
Testing Lymphocytes
Provides a more accurate measurement of long term functional nutritional levels Are host to cell-mediated immune system Possesses metabolic pathways common to other cells Contains nucleus which permits rapi d DNA synthesis and cell growth Measures DNA synthesis and cell growth Are easily available in large numbers from a standard blood draw Indicates if nutrients are being absorbed and functioning properly
Clinical Applications
Knowing nutritional risk factors and treating their causes can contribute to the arrest or prevention of many degenerative conditions Patients derive signicant benets Measuring and correcting vitamin deciencies are essential for patients concerned with wellness and anti-aging Micronutrient testing provides important baseline tests to identify deciencies
Measuring Functional Levels
Allows physicians to get more sensitive and accurate nutritional reading Provides long term status, not just an immediate snapshot Determines if the nutrient is being absorbed and functioning properly on the cellular level
Tests for B6, B12, Folate &
Homocysteine
Gives the physicians an overall informative cardiovascular program, not just a lab number Combines Micronutrient testing and HPLC methodology for Homocysteine Examines the cellular function of each individual to nd out what is needed to x the homocysteine problem and reduce risk, cardiovascular disease and stroke
SPECTROX® - Antioxidant Testing
Percentage gives a total antioxidant measurement, not just one or two specic values Measures ability of cells to withstand attack from free radicals and other oxidative stresses (antioxidant reserve) Allows for early intervention to correct deciencies and promote health Plays role in prevention and clinical treatment of a large variety of disease modalities
Easy Sample Collection
No refrigeration or freezing Complete test kit and transportation provided No centrifugation

To prevent denials, when billing third party payors, all requisitions must include all medically necessary ICD-9 diagnosis codes. ICD-9 codes are required bycertain third party payors to confirm the medical necessity of the test(s), and/or profile(s) ordered. The codes listed below are some of the most commonly received codes for testing performed at SpectraCell Laboratories. These were taken from the 2008 ICD-9 manual issued by AMA. While this list may be a useful tool, depending upon the nature of your practice, it is not complete. Please refer to the ICD-9 manual for a complete listing. The ultimate responsibility for correct coding lies with the ordering physician. Please place all medically appropriate ICD-9 codes on the requisition. If ordering for screening purposes, please provide the appropriate screening ICD-9 codes.

a ea e ctct ooUnderstanding DiabetesAccording to the American DiabetesAssociation, type 2 diabetes is the mostcommon form of diabetes. With this typeof diabetes, cells do not receive enoughinsulin. As a result, cells starve for energy, and over time, a glucose buildup in the blood stream causes negative effects on a person’s eyes, kidneys, nerves or heart.
Today’s fast-paced society has led to quicker, higher carbohydrate alternatives as food sources. As a result, there is a greater threat of developing diabetes due to cells becoming insulin-resistant.
Micronutrients such as niacin, magnesium, calcium, zinc, carnitine, inositol, alpha-lipoic acid, as well as vitamins E, B6 and D all play an important role in the prevention and treatment of diabetes.
Ask your doctor today about SpectraCell’s FIA™ tests to accurately diagnose your body’s exact needs and/or deficiencies. Though diabetes is a serious disease - with the right treatment - living a longer, healthier life can be made easier.
20.8 million people in the United States, or 7% of the population, have diabetes. An estimated 14.6 million have been diagnosed.6.2 million people (or nearly one-third) are unaware that they already have the disease.41 million people in the United States, ages 40 to 74, have pre-diabetes. 10.9 million, or 10.5% of all men aged 20 years or older, have diabetes although nearly one-third of them do not know it.9.7 million, or 8.8% of all women aged 20 years or older, have diabetes although nearlyone-third of them do not know it.The prevalence of diabetes is at least 2 to 4 times higher among non-Hispanic Black, Hispanic/Latino American, American Indian, and Asian Pacific Islander women than amongnon-Hispanic white women.

Cholesterol has historically been used as the standard indicator for cardiovascular disease, being classified as HDL (good) or LDL (bad). However, it is actually the lipoprotein particles that carry the cholesterol throughout the body, not the cholesterol within them, that are responsible for key steps in plaque production and the resulting development of cardiovascular disease.
Why is it important to know lipoprotein numbers?Cardiovascular risk increases with a higher number of low density lipoprotein (LDL) particles, regardless of how much cholesterol each lipoprotein particle contains. This is because both a higher number of LDL particles or smaller sized LDL particles dramatically increase the probability of lipoproteins penetrating the arterial wall, where it can cause serious damage.
Why measure lipoprotein subgroups?Measuring the lipoprotein subgroups is the only way to evaluate new risk factors, which is crucial for accurate assessment of cardiovascular risk and treatment, according to the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP).
Over 20% of the population has cholesterol-depleted LDL. This is a condition in which a patient’s cholesterol may be “normal,” but their lipoprotein particle number and hence their actual risk would be much higher than conventional cholesterol tests would indicate. This is especially common in persons whose triglycerides are high or HDL is low. In a cholesterol-depleted patient, there can be up to a 40 percent error in risk assessment in a standard lipid panel.
Use LPPTM in your practice for accurate cardiovascular risk assessment. With LPPTM, a physician can begin to treat patients with atherogenic lipoprotein profiles before overt dyslipidemia becomes apparent.
NCEP Emerging Risk Factors Small, dense LDL – these atherogenic particles easily penetrate the arterial endothelium causing plaque.
RLP (Remnant Lipoprotein) – very atherogenic lipoprotein that doesn’t need to be oxidized to form plaque.
 Lp(a) – a prothrombotic small, dense LDL
HDL2b – positively correlates with heart health because it is an indicator of how well excess lipids are removed.
Approximately 50 percent of people suffering from heart attacks have shown “normal” cholesterol numbers. NIH – National Heart, Blood and Lung Institute, 2001
Only measuring cholesterol can be misleading.

Q. Why do I need the Aspirin Response Test ?A. Medical studies indicate that not everyone benefits equally from low dose aspirin. In fact some
people have been reported to be aspirin “resistant” but increasing studies indicate that it may be
a question of aspirin therapy “failure”. Because aspirin is known to reduce the risk of heart attack
and stroke by helping stop platelets from sticking together, the Aspirin Response Test allows the
doctor to determine if you are benefiting optimally from your aspirin regimen.Q. What are the chances that my platelets are not responding to aspirin?
A. According to reports in the medical literature, 10% to 40% of patients taking aspirin were not
receiving the desired result. The fact is that even if aspirin is working on your platelets, there are
other factors that may overcome the benefit of the aspirin. Traditional platelet function assays can
not detect this result.Q. What are the dangers to me if I am not benefiting from my aspirin?
A. Outcome studies have demostrated that patients with a poor response to aspirin therapy have
a higher incidence of second heart attacks, strokes or even death when compared to patients with
a good response. Q. Why shouldn’t I just take more aspirin?A. Increasing the amount of aspirin you take may cause an increase in unwanted side effects such as
stomach discomfort or gastrointestinal bleeding. More importantly, the aspirin may be doing its job
but there is some other factor overcoming its benefit which may require an additional medication.
Only your physician should decide if it is safe to change your aspirin dosage.Q. How often should I be tested?A. The optimum frequency of testing has not been established. Clinical studies indicate that certain
individuals lose the benefit of aspirin therapy over time due to atherosclerotic disease or
increases in cholesterol. Q. What does the Aspirin Response Test measure?A. When an individual’s platelets become activated they release a chemical called Thromboxane A2
(TxA2) which causes more platelets to become activated and stick together. This may
cause formation of a blood clot. The ART test measures a metabolite of TxA2 called
11-dehydro thromboxane B2 which is excreted in the urine. When an individual is benefiting
from their aspirin therapy the level of 11-dehydroTxB2 in the urine is very low.Q. Is the Aspirin Response Test complicated?A. No. This test is performed on a random urine sample. It is important that you be able to give your
doctor a thorough history of the other drugs you have taken during the past 10 days, especially
other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Be sure to mention any dietary supplements and
alcohol intake. Note the amount and frequency of aspirin usage.

Q. Do all NSAID’s interfere with aspirin binding?
A. To date, only Ibuprofen has been proven to interfere with the binding of aspirin to the
platelet which prevents acetylation of the COX-1 enzyme.
Q. How soon after taking NSAID’s is it safe to take aspirin for heart benefit?
A. Again this has been addressed only in regard to Ibuprofen. It is presently recommended that
the individual must wait at least 8 hours after ingesting Ibuprofen before ingesting aspirin or at
least 30 minutes after aspirin ingestion before ingesting Ibuprofen.
Q. How long should I wait after a patient has begun aspirin therapy to test?
A. According to the literature, it takes up to 5 days for low-dose aspirin therapy to achieve
maximum reduction in urinary 11-dehydro thromboxane B2 levels.
Q. Does liver disease affect the results?
A. Yes. Liver disease may prevent the metabolism of thromboxane A2 to
11-dehydro thromboxane B2.
Q. Does renal disease affect the results?
A. Yes. Kidney disease may prevent the metabolism of thromboxane A2 to
11-dehydro thromboxane B2.
Q. Does the platelet count of the patient have an effect on the test?
A. To date no studies have been performed addressing a relationship between platelet count
and levels of 11-dehydro thromboxane B2. If there is sufficient aspirin on board to block the
COX-1 pathway, then the individual is benefiting. Platelet count does not necessarily reflect
functional platelets, therefore a correlation can not be assumed. More importantly, if the
individual does not have a high percentage of platelet turnover, a daily regimen of aspirin
should eventually knock out all of the platelets because the effect of aspirin on the platelet is
irreversible and lasts for the lifetime of the platelet.
Q. How much aspirin should I be recommending and what about adding Plavix?
A. Within the guidelines for treatment with aspirin, the physician may administer doses from 81
to 325 mg. It is completely up to the physician to recommend any change in aspirin dose based
on the individual’s circumstances. Adding Plavix to a patient’s anti-platelet regimen is strictly
up to the physician and depends on the clinical condition of the patient. Certain studies have
demonstrated an added benefit with Plavix in addition to aspirin in symptomatic patients;
however, asymptomatic patients have not always demonstrated an added benefit.

Mark Houston, M.D. M.S., SCH, ABAAM, FACP, FAHA Internal Medicine Hypertension Institute – A Cardiovascular Center of Excellence St. Thomas Medical Center Nashville, TN "SpectraCell offers a unique, scientifically-based nutrient evaluation of specific deficiencies that allows targeted treatment with nutritional supplements. The detection of these abnormalities allows for a biological, functional and nutritional biochemistry approach for the prevention and treatment of many diseases for which the basic problem originated with the missing nutrient and subsequent downstream nutritional dysfunction and illness. Patient and physician recognition of this valid testing will improve patient compliance, allow for tailored therapy and reduce numerous diseases” Seth Baum, M.D. Cardiologist VitalRemedy MD Boca Raton, FL “As an interventional cardiologist and electrophysiologist dedicated to the advancement of cardiovascular health, I have come to appreciate the need for individualizing our approach to patient care. Though it’s important to use large clinical trials as a means of guiding us in an “evidence based” manner, it has become clear to most of us that these trials too often fall short in their clinical utility. They frequently fail to address the needs of individual patients, unique and extraordinarily complex beings who’ve entrusted their health and well being to us, their doctors. A question often raised by patients and physicians alike relates to the use of antioxidant supplements such as vitamins C and E, Co Q10, and alpha lipoic acid. Trials evaluating antioxidants have been mixed, spanning the gamut from very positive to equally negative. Most of these trials, however, have been neutral. The failure of these studies to solve the antioxidant puzzle relates to their reliance upon fixed dose supplementation; they neglect the wide range of individual responses that occur when using antioxidants. They have also ignored the issue of balancing antioxidants. As antioxidants exist in vivo within a constantly recirculating and regenerating network, they must be consumed in balance so that an excess of one does not adversely affect the remaining “players” in what ought to be a harmonious system. In order to help my patients navigate the tumultuous seas of antioxidant supplementation, I have relied upon the Spectrox® blood test for the better part of the last decade. By utilizing this test, I have the ability to supplement patients on an individual, and an “as need” basis. Spectrox® eliminates the guesswork from supplementation, and permits not only my patients, but me as well, to feel comfortable that we are “doing the right thing.” Follow up blood tests enable us to document that any changes we’ve made have had their desired affect. If they haven’t, then it’s back to the drawing board for another attempt. “
