Safety information Before operating the system, check that the

operating voltage indicated on the typeplate (orthe voltage indication beside the voltageselector) of your system is identical with thevoltage of your local power supply. If not, pleaseconsult your dealer.

Place the system on a flat, hard and stablesurface.

Place the system in a location with adequateventilation to prevent internal heat build-up inyour system. Allow at least 10 cm (4 inches)clearance from the rear and the top of the unitand 5 cm (2 inches) from each side.

Do not expose the system, batteries or discs toexcessive moisture, rain, sand or heat sourcescaused by heating equipment or direct sunlight.

If the system is brought directly from a cold to awarm location, or is placed in a very damp room,moisture may condense on the lens of the discunit inside the system. Should this occur, the CDplayer would not operate normally. Leave thepower on for about one hour with no disc in thesystem until normal playback is possible.

The mechanical parts of the set contain self-lubricating bearings and must not be oiled orlubricated.

When the system is switched to Standbymode, it is still consuming some power.To disconnect the system from thepower supply completely, remove the ACpower plug from the wall socket.

Rear connections

The type plate is located at the rear of thesystem.

A Power

Before connecting the AC power cord to thewall outlet, ensure that all other connectionshave been made.

WARNING!– For optimal performance, use only theoriginal power cable.– Never make or change connections withthe power switched on.

To avoid overheating of the system, a safetycircuit has been built in. Therefore, yoursystem may switch to Standby modeautomatically under extreme conditions. Ifthis happens, let the system cool downbefore reusing it.

B Antennas Connection

Connect the supplied AM loop antenna and FMantenna to the respective terminals. Adjust theposition of the antenna for optimal reception.

¶ For better FM stereo reception, connect anoutdoor FM antenna to the FM ANTENNAterminal.

C Speakers Connection

Front SpeakersConnect the speaker wires to the SPEAKERS(FRONT) terminals, right speaker to "R" and leftspeaker to "L", colored (marked) wire to "+"and black (unmarked) wire to "-".

Fully insert the stripped portion of the speakerwire into the terminal as shown.

Notes:– For optimal sound performance, use thesupplied speakers.– Do not connect more than one speaker to anyone pair of +/- speaker terminals.– Do not connect speakers with an impedancelower than the speakers supplied. Please refer tothe SPECIFICATIONS section of this manual.

Optional connectionsThe optional equipment and connecting cordsare not supplied. Refer to the operatinginstructions of the connected equipment fordetails.

Subwoofer Out ConnectionConnect the subwoofer to the SUBWOOFEROUT terminal. The subwoofer reproduces justthe low bass sound effect (explosions or therumble of spaceships, for example).

Connecting other equipment to yoursystemConnect the audio left and right OUT terminalsof a TV, VCR, Laser Disc player, DVD player orCD Recorder to the AUX/CDR IN terminals.

Note:– If you are connecting equipment with a monooutput (a single audio out terminal), connect it tothe AUX/CDR IN left terminal. Alternatively, youcan use a “single to double” cinch cable (still bemono sound).

Digital Out ConnectionConnect this digital output when recording onany audio equipment with digital input (CDRecorder, Digital Audio Tape [DAT] deck, Digitalto Analog Converter and Digital Signal Processor,for example). Use a cinch cable to connect theDIGITAL OUT terminal to the digital inputterminal of the equipment.

Inserting batteries into theremote controlInsert two batteries (Type R06 or AA) into theremote control with the correct polarity asindicated by the + and - symbols inside thebattery compartment.

Basic Functions

IMPORTANT!Before you operate the system, completethe preparation procedures.

Plug and PlayPlug and Play allows you to store all availableradio stations automatically.

First time setup/power up

1 When you turn on the main supply, "AUTOINSTALL - PRESS PLAY" is displayed.

2 Press PLAYÉ (ÉÅ ) on the system to startinstallation. "INSTALL" is displayed and followed by"TUNER" and "AUTO". PROGRAM starts flashing. All available radio stations with sufficient signalstrength will be stored automatically, startingfrom FM and followed by AM band. When all the available radio stations arestored or the memory for 40 presets are used,the last preset radio station will be played.

To reinstall Plug and Play

1 In standby or demonstration mode, press andhold PLAYÉ(ÉÅ ) on the system until"AUTO INSTALL - PRESS PLAY" isdisplayed.

2 Press PLAYÉ (ÉÅ ) again to start installation. All previously stored radio stations will bereplaced.

To exit without storing the Plug and Play Press Çon the system.

If you do not complete the Plug and Playinstallation, the function will be restarted whenyou next turn on the main supply again.

Notes:– When the power is turned on, the disc tray mayopen and close to initialize the system.– If no stereo frequency is detected during Plugand Play, "CHECK ANTENNA" is displayed.– During Plug and Play, if no button is pressedwithin 15 seconds, the system will exit Plug andPlay mode automatically.

Demonstration modeThe system has a demonstration mode thatshows the various features offered by the system.

To activate the demonstration In standby mode, press and hold

DEMO STOP on the system until"DEMO ON" is displayed. The demonstration will begin.

To deactivate the demonstration Press and hold DEMO STOP on the system

until "DEMO OFF" is displayed. The system will switch to standby mode.

Switching the system on

In standby/demonstration mode

Press STANDBY ON to switch on the lastselected source.

Press CD 1•2•3 (CD 123), TUNER, TAPE,AUX/CDR.

Press any one of the disc CD OPEN•CLOSE(CD10 / CD20 / CD 30) button. The system will switch to CD mode.

In Eco Power standby mode

Press ECO POWER to switch on the lastselected source.

Press CD 123, TUNER, TAPE or AUX/CDRon the remote control.

Switching the system to standbymode

In demonstration mode Press and hold DEMO STOP on the system.

In any other source mode (except EcoPower standby mode)

Press STANDBY ON. The clock will appear on the display when thesystem is in Standby mode.

Switching the system to EcoPower standby mode (< 0.4 Watt)

Press ECO POWER (or B on the remotecontrol). "ECO PWR" is displayed, then the displayscreen will go blank. The low power ECO POWER LED will belighted.

Note:– If you have not deactivated the demonstration, itwill resume five seconds after the system switchesto Eco Power standby or standby mode.

Power saving automatic standbyAs a power-saving feature, the system willautomatically switch to standby mode if you donot press any buttons within 30 minutes after adisc or tape has stopped playing.

Dim modeYou can select the desired brightness for thedisplay.

Press DIM on the remote control repeatedly toselect DIM 1, DIM 2, DIM 3 or DIM OFF displaymode. DIM and the corresponding mode number willappear on the display, except for DIM OFFmode.

DIM OFF .........All available LEDs light up, displayscreen will have full brightness,music level bar active.

DIM 1 ...............Some LEDs light up, displayscreen will have full brightness,music level bar inactive.

DIM 2 ...............All lightings turn off, displayscreen will have full brightness,music level bar inactive.

DIM 3 ...............All lightings turn off, displayscreen will be at half brightness,music level bar inactive.

Volume controlAdjust VOL to increase (turn knob clockwise orpress VOLUME +) or decrease (turn knobcounter-clockwise or press VOLUME -) thesound level. "-XX dB" is displayed. "XX" denotes thevolume level. When reached the minimum volume level,"VOL MUTE" is displayed.

To listen through the headphones Connect the headphones plug

to the PHONES socket at thefront of the system. The speakers will be muted.

To switch off the volume temporarily

Press MUTE on the remote control. Playback will continue without sound and"MUTE" is displayed.

To restore the volume, press MUTE again orincrease the volume level.

Interactive sound control

For optimal sound listening, you are onlyable to select either BASS/TREBLE orwOOx.

wOOxThere are three wOOx settings to enhance thebass response.

Loading disc

Playing discs

a disc is loaded in the disc tray

To play all discs on the disc tray Press PLAYÉ (ÉÅ ).

All the available discs will play once, then stop. During playback, the selected disc tray, tracknumber and elapsed playing time of the currenttrack will appear on the display.

To play the selected disc only Press one of the CD DIRECT 1/2/3 buttons

on the remote control. The selected disc will play once, then stop.

To interrupt playback

Press PAUSEÅ (ÉÅ ). The current track time flashing.

To resume playback, press PLAYÉ (ÉÅ )again.

To stop playback Press Ç.

Selecting a desired track/passage

To search for a particular passage duringplayback

Press and hold à or á and release it whenthe desired passage is located. During searching, the volume will be reduced.

To select a desired track

Press í or ë repeatedly until the desiredtrack is displayed.

If playback is stopped, press PLAYÉ (ÉÅ ) tostart playback.

Note:– In Shuffle mode, pressingí will cause theplayer to skip only to the beginning of the currenttrack.

To skip to the beginning of the currenttrack during playback

Press í once.

To resume playback from the lastselected track

In CD stop mode, press CD RESUME on theremote control to start playback again fromwhere you have stopped.

Notes:– Resume will not be available if you havechanged the disc, opened the disc tray ordisconnected the system power supply.– Select CD RESUME in any other source modewill only able to resume the last selected CD activemode (for example, CD stop or playback).

Replacing discs during playbackYou are able to replace or load in disc into theother two disc trays without interrupting currentplayback.

While playback, press the CD OPEN•CLOSEbutton of the inactive disc trays (refer to“Loading Disc”).

If you press CD OPEN•CLOSE button of theactive disc tray, the disc will stop playing and thedisc tray will slide out. Once the disc tray is opened, it will bedeselected.

Repeat and ShuffleYou can select and change the various playmodes before or during playback.

Repeat play

1 Press REPEAT on the remote controlrepeatedly to select : "TRACK" – to repeat playback of thecurrent track. "DISC" – to repeat playback of the currentdisc. "ALL DISC" or "PROGRAM" – to repeatplayback of all available discs or programmedtracks.

Random play

1 Press SHUFFLE on the remote control. SHUFFLE is shown and "SHUFFLE" isdisplayed. All the available discs or programmed tracks(if programme is active) will be played in randomorder.

2 To resume normal playback, press SHUFFLEagain. SHUFFLE disappears.

Notes:– Selecting SHUFFLE during repeat playback willcancel all repeat modes.– Pressing the CD OPEN•CLOSE button will cancelall repeat and shuffling modes.

Programming the disc tracksProgramming tracks is possible when playback isstopped. Up to 40 tracks can be stored in thememory in any order.

1 Load the desired discs on the disc trays (refer to“Loading Disc”).

2 Press PROG to start programming. PROGRAM starts flashing.

3 Press CD 1•2•3 or CD DIRECT 1/2/3 buttonto select a disc.

4 Press í or ë repeatedly to select the desiredtrack.

5 Press PROG to store the track.

Repeat steps 3–5 to store other discs and tracks.

6 To end programming, press Ç once. PROGRAM stays and the program moderemains active. The total number of tracks programmed andthe total playing time are displayed.

7 Press PLAYÉ (ÉÅ ) to start programplayback. "PLAY PROGRAM" is displayed.

CD Operation

Notes:– If the total playing time is more than "99:59"or if one of the programmed tracks has a numbergreater than 30, then "--:--" is displayedinstead of the total playing time.– If you attempt to program more than 40 tracks,"PROGRAM FULL" is displayed.– If you press any of the CD DIRECT 1/2/3buttons on the remote control, the system will playthe selected disc or track, and the stored programwill be ignored temporarily. The PROGRAM symbolalso will disappear temporarily from the display. Itwill reappear when playback of the selected discends.– During programming, if no button is pressedwithin 20 seconds, the system will exit the Programmode automatically.

To review the program

Stop playback and press í or ë repeatedly.

To exit review mode, press Ç.

Erasing the program

Press Ç once when playback is stopped ortwice during playback. PROGRAM disappears and "PROGRAMCLEARED" is displayed.

Note:– The program will be erased when the system isdisconnected from the power supply or when thedisc tray is opened.

Tuning to radio stations

1 Press TUNER to select TUNER mode. "TUNER" is displayed. A few seconds later,the current radio frequency will appear on thedisplay. If an FM station is received in stereo, isdisplayed.

2 Press TUNER again to select the desiredwaveband : FM or AM.

3 Press and hold à or á until the frequencyindication starts to change, then release. The display will show "SEARCH" until aradio station with sufficient signal strength isfound.

4 Repeat step 3 if necessary until you find thedesired radio station.

To tune to a weak station, press à or á brieflyand repeatedly until optimal reception found.

Storing preset radio stationsYou can store up to 40 preset radio stations inthe memory.

Automatic Preset Programming

To begin automatic preset from a desiredpreset number

All available radio stations with sufficient signalstrength will be stored automatically, startingfrom FM and followed by AM band. Erasing a preset radio station

1 Press í or ë to select the preset radio stationto be erased.

2 Press and hold Çon the system until“PRESET DELETED” is displayed. The deleted radio frequency remains on thedisplay. The preset numbers of all other preset radiostations in the band with higher numbers arealso decreased by one.

Repeat steps 1–2 to erase other preset radiostations.

Rewinding / Fast forwarding

1 Stop playback, press à or á. The tape will stop automatically at the end ofrewinding or fast forwarding.

2 Press Ç to stop rewinding or fast forwarding.

Note:– During rewinding or fast forwarding of a tape, itis also possible to select another source (CD,TUNER or AUX, for example).

General information onrecording

For recording, use only tape of IEC type I(normal tape).

The recording level is set automatically, regardlessof the position of the Volume, IncredibleSurround, BASS/TREBLE, and so forth.

The tape is secured at both ends with leadertape. At the beginning and endof the tape, nothing will berecorded for six to sevenseconds.

To prevent accidental recording,break out the tab on the leftshoulder of the tape side youwant to protect.

If “CHECK TAPE” is displayed, the protectiontab has been broken. Put a piece of clearadhesive tape over the opening.

IMPORTANT!Recording is permissible if copyright orother rights of third parties are notinfringed upon.

Preparation for recording

1 Press TAPE to select tape mode.

2 Load a recordable tape into the tape deck.

3 Press í or ë to select the recording tape side. A appears on the display for the reverseside. B appears on the display for the forwardside.

4 Press AUTO REV. on the remote controlrepeatedly to select a recording mode. å for recording on one side only. ∂ ∂ ∂ ∂ ∂ for recording on both sides.

5 Prepare the source to be recorded.CD 1•2•3 – load the disc(s).TUNER – tune to the desired radio station.AUX – connect external equipment.

When recording is in progress starts flashing.

It is not possible to change tape side.

It is not possible to listen to another source.

It is not possible to activate the timer function.

One touch recording

1 Press CD 1•2•3, TUNER or AUX to select thesource.

2 Start playback of the selected source.

3 Press 0 REC to start recording.

Timer settingThe system can switch on to CD, TUNER, orTAPE mode automatically at a preset time,serving as an alarm to wake you up.

IMPORTANT!– Before setting the timer, ensure that theclock is set correctly.– The timer will always be switched onafter it has been set.– The timer will not start if a recording is inprogress.– The volume of the timer will increasegradually from the minimum level to thelast tuned volume level.

1 Press and hold TIMER on the remote controlfor more than two seconds. "AM 12:00" or "00:00" or the last timersetting starts flashing. TIMER starts flashing. The selected source will be lighted whileother available sources are flashing.

2 Press CD 1•2•3, TUNER or TAPE to selectthe desired source.

Before setting the timer, make sure the musicsource has been prepared.CD 1•2•3 – Load the disc(s). To start from aspecific track, make a program (refer to “CDOperation - Programming the disc tracks”).TUNER – tune to the desired radio station.TAPE – load a prerecorded tape.

3 Pressà or á repeatedly to set the hour forthe timer to start.

4 Pressí or ë repeatedly to set the minute forthe timer to start.

5 Press TIMER to store the start time. "TIMER ON" is displayed, followed by theset timer "XX:XX" and the selected source. TIMER remains on the display.

At the preset time, the selected sound sourcewill play.

To exit without storing the setting Press Çon the system.

Notes:– If CD is the selected source and it is notavailable when the preset time is reached, Tunerwill be selected automatically.– During timer setting, if no button is pressedwithin 90 seconds, the system will exit timer settingmode automatically.

Checking the timer

Press TIMER on the remote control. If the timer has been activated, the set timerinformation is displayed.

Activating/deactivating the timer

Press TIMER ON/OFF repeatedly on theremote control. If activated, the last set timer information isdisplayed for a few seconds, TIMER is shown. If deactivated, “OFF” is displayed.

Deactivating the wake up timer (fiveminutes interval)

After timer wake up, press SNOOZE on theremote control. The system will switch to standby mode forfive minutes. After that, it resumes the timer lastselected source again.

To cancel the snooze function, press SNOOZEagain.

Note:– You are only able to activate the Snoozefunction within 30 minutes after timer wake up.

Sleep timer settingThe sleep timer enables the system to switch tostandby mode automatically at a preset time.

1 Press SLEEP on the remote control repeatedlyto select a preset amount of time. The selections are as follows (time inminutes):

Maintenance

Cleaning the Cabinet¶ Use a soft cloth slightly moistened with a mild

detergent solution. Do not use a solutioncontaining alcohol, spirits, ammonia or abrasives.

Cleaning Discs¶ When a disc becomes dirty,

clean it with a cleaning cloth.Wipe the disc from the centerout. Do not wipe in a circularmotion.

¶ Do not use solvents such asbenzine, thinner, commerciallyavailable cleaners, or antistatic spray intended foranalog records.

Cleaning the disc lens¶ After prolonged use, dirt or dust may

accumulate at the disc lens. To ensure goodplayback quality, clean the disc lens with PhilipsCD Lens Cleaner or any commercially availablecleaner. Follow the instructions supplied with thecleaner.

Cleaning the Heads and the Tape Paths¶ To ensure good recording and playback quality,

clean the heads A, the capstan(s) B, andpressure roller(s) C after every 50 hours oftape operation.

¶ Use a cotton swab slightly moistened withcleaning fluid or alcohol.

¶ You also can clean the heads by playing acleaning tape once.

Demagnetizing the heads¶ Use a demagnetizing tape available at your

dealer.

Troubleshooting

WARNINGUnder no circumstances should you try to repair the system yourself, as this will invalidate thewarranty. Do not open the system as there is a risk of electric shock.

If a fault occurs, first check the points listed below before taking the system for repair. If youare unable to remedy a problem by following these hints, consult your dealer or service center.

CD OPERATION

“NO DISC” is displayed. – Insert a disc.– Check if the disc is inserted upside down.– Wait until the moisture condensation at the lens

has cleared.– Replace or clean the disc, see “Maintenance”.

“DISC NOT FINALIZED” is displayed. – Use a finalized CD-RW or CD-R.

Troubleshooting

RADIO RECEPTION

Radio reception is poor. – If the signal is too weak, adjust the antenna orconnect an external antenna for better reception.

– Increase the distance between the Mini HiFiSystem and your TV or VCR.

TAPE OPERATION/RECORDING

Recording or playback cannot be made. – Clean deck parts, see “Maintenance”.– Use only NORMAL (IEC I) tape.– Apply a piece of adhesive tape over the missing

tab space.

The tape deck door cannot open. – Remove and reconnect the AC power plug andswitch on the system again.

GENERAL

The system does not react when buttons – Remove and reconnect the AC power plug andare pressed. switch on the system again.

Sound cannot be heard or is of poor – Adjust the volume.quality. – Disconnect the headphones.

– Check that the speakers are connected correctly.– Check if the stripped speaker wire is clamped.

The left and right sound outputs are – Check the speaker connections and location.reversed.

The remote control does not function – Select the source (CD or TUNER, for example)properly. before pressing the function button (É,í,ë).

– Reduce the distance between the remote controland the system.

– Insert the batteries with their polarities(+/– signs) aligned as indicated.

– Replace the batteries.– Point the remote control directly toward

IR sensor on the front of the system.

The timer is not working. – Set the clock correctly.– Press TIMER ON/OFF to switch on the timer.– If a recording is in progress, stop the recording.

Not all lighted buttons are showing light. – Press DIM to select DIM OFF display mode.

The Clock/Timer setting is erased. – Power has been interrupted or the power cordhas been disconnected. Reset the clock/timer.

The system displays features – Press and hold DEMO STOP on the systemautomatically and buttons start flashing. to switch off the demonstration.
