Modicon Micro — simple, compatible, high performance fixed I/O micro PLC

With the simplicity of a self-contained system package, the compatability andfunctionality of the Modicon984 Family, and high perfor-mance of very fast throughput, the Micro offers the intelligentsolution for your small machinecontrol needs. In fact, theMicro brings together the bestfeatures of fixed I/O micro andlarge modular PLCs.

All-in-one packagePower supply, cpu, memory,I/O and communications arecontained in a single hous-ing measuring 10 incheslong by 6.5 inches high, byan amazing 3 inches deepthat can be DIN rail or panelmounted. This enables youto door mount pilot devicesdirectly in front of the Microin a standard 6-inch depthpanel, reducing the spacerequirement and cost.

High speedthroughputHigh speed inputs, interruptprocessing, and immediateupdating of outputs canrealize a throughput of lessthan 2 milliseconds. One ofthese inputs can be config-ured as a 5 kHz high speedcounter. Interrupts can beevent-, time-, or count-based, giving you thepower to solve high speedmachinery applicationsnever before possible.

Plug-and-playcommunicationsOnboard serial communi-cation ports for simpleconnectivity to computers,MMI, modems, printers,

barcode readers andinstrumentation. Theseports can be addressed viaeither ASCII messaging orModbus, one of the mostprolific serial communica-tion protocols available andthe de facto industrystandard.

Choice of systemexpansionYou can expand yoursystem capacity in one oftwo ways: by simply linkingup to four Microsconfigured as “children” toone “parent” Micro over asingle cable, high speedI/O expansion link. Or youcan utilize A120 Series I/O

to grow your systemmodularly in smallerincrements with greater I/Ooptions. In the parent-childconfiguration, you canchoose to have all of thechild’s I/O and communica-tions controlled by theparent or split the outputsand communication portsto allow coprocessing totailor system performance. This flexibility will serve youwell when the job growsbigger than originallyexpected.

Built-in nonvolatilememoryWith the Modicon Micro, you won’t have to worryabout handling UV-EPROMand EEPROM chips orcartridges for nonvolatilestorage of programmemory. Programs storedin battery or capacitor-backed RAM can now bebacked up in safe andsecure, resident Flash-PROM, the latest in lowmaintenance, nonvolatile, memory storage technology.

984 FamilycompatibilityThe standard programmingfunctions of the 984 Familymean that programs caneasily be transported fromthe Micro to any other 984Family controller, such asthe 984-120 Compact. Anyprogramming effort on theMicro is worthwhilebecause the 984 functionset is the fundamentalsoftware building block toall Modicon controllers.Only one softwareprogramming package is required. This enablesyou to create a library oftested programs that canbe used across all yourPLC installations regardlessof size. This translates intoreduced engineering effortfor a faster time to marketfor OEMs, and reducedtraining requirements andsimplified troubleshootingfor plant maintenance personnel.

Modbus Plus forcost-effectivepeer-to-peernetworkingAlong with Modbus, theCPU-145, CPU-245, andCPU-255 also feature built-in Modbus Plus.Based on simple, cost-effective twisted pair archi-tecture, Modbus Plus provides a one megabaudcommunication rate for fastdata transfers. In addition, interface boards are avail-able to provide easyaccess to Modbus Plusdata from application pro-grams running on IBM-compatibles. Many third-parties support ModbusPlus for equipment such as variable speed drivesand MMIs.

Easy-to-implementdistributed controlWithout impacting the logicprogram or logic scan, youcan implement high speedpeer-to-peer communicationsby using Peer Cop.

Peer Cop is a function blockprogrammed at the sametime you configure and pro-gram the controller. Thisenables you to map in dataregisters and I/O from othercontrollers on the network aseasily as addressing localI/O. The ease with which it isaccomplished will forevertake the mystery out of net-working. You can confidentlydivide and conquer largecontrol tasks, resulting in eas-ier troubleshooting, reducedstartup costs, and less down-time.

Programming over thenetworkAlong with its many features,Modbus Plus is also compat-ible with traditional Modbusso programming can be per-formed over the network whileall the data transferscontinue.

Bridge mode forimmediate access toModbus Plus networkvia the Modbus port ofall CPU-xx5 controllers

A built-in bridge mode makesprogramming all controllerson a Modbus Plus networkpossible by simply connect-ing a programmer to aModbus port of one of thecontrollers on the network. The CPU with Modbus Plus inbridge mode can also act asa gateway to any 984-com-patible controller, MMI, orother Modbus-compatibledevice on a Modbus networkto which it is connected.

Compact 984 CPU and I/O make up a complete system

The structure —rugged, modular, and easy to install

A120 Series I/O —compact, cost-effective, and flexible

The A120 Series I/O modulesprovide a durable and efficientfield device interface for 984-120 Compact central process-ing units and the CPU-x12level Micro controllers. Youcan choose the A120 SeriesI/O in densities of four, eight, and sixteen discrete points,up to eight points of analoginput and up to eight points ofanalog output. Motion controland high speed counting arealso supported.

Quality designedand builtThe module housings andsubracks in the A120 SeriesI/O line are molded ofrugged high quality material.Designed for demanding

conditions, the A120 SeriesI/O modules are ideally suit-ed to applications whichmay require future changeor expansion.

High density andhigh integrityWith AC and DC I/Odensities up to 16 points, fully rated up to 2 amps perpoint AC output modules, and combination I/O mod-ules with maximum relayand solid state DC outputcurrent capabilities up to 2amps per point; the A120Series I/O is the highestintegrity small PLC I/O inthe industry.

Fast Analog-to-Digital conversionConversion of analog inputvalues in less than 10 msfor four channels.

Intelligent modulesthat match the taskIn addition, the familyincludes A120 SeriesIntelligent I/O modules.

High-speed counter/positionerThis module allows foreither a single channel ofpulse or incrementalencoder input and tworelay outputs. It handlescounting rates of 50 kHz at24 VDC and 500 kHz at 5VDC with an operatingrange of ±8,338,607. Thesetpoint values can be seton the fly from the applica-tions program and the relayoutputs can switch loadssuch as valves and motorstarters at 24-110 VDC and24-230 VAC.

Four-channel highspeed countersFor counting applicationsthat are faster than the scanrate of your applicationprogram, but do not requireencoder feedback, thefour-channel high-speedcounter modules accept upto four 25 kHz pulses. Thiscan be done at 5 VDC, 12VDC or 24 VDC with four 24 VDC solid state outputs, one for each countingchannel. Typical applica-tions are tachometer feed-back in flow metering orsimple up/down partscounting. In addition, (VRC)Variable Reluctance Coilinput from devices such asturbine flow-meters can besupported directly by theI/O. All the counters aresoftware configurable.

AS-HDTA-201 Secondary Expansion Rack with Servo Motion, Analog and Discrete I/O. (Up to 3 secondary racks may be connected to one primary rack.)

9

The main subrack houses theCPU and two or three modules, depending on whether theoptional 115/230 VAC-24 VDCpower supply is required. Youcan choose expansion subrackssupporting either two or fivemodules. With the integral,ribbon-cable connector, you canattach up to three expansionsubracks for a total of 18possible A120 I/O modules in a984-120 Compact system or 15in a Micro system.

Removable, push-in type, screwterminal blocks provide excellentaccess for easy wiring and allowfor module changes withoutdisturbing connections. LEDindicators are next to each I/Opoint, along with the identificationlabel, for superior troubleshootingand monitoring ease.

Single axis servomotion control

A120 Series I/O MotionModules are high perfor-mance, single axis servomotion controllers. They aredesigned to control brush-less and brush-type servomotors, as well as hydraulics, using resolver and/orencoder feedback. DirectNumerical Processing(DNP) technology, theModicon patented, advanced digital motioncontrol, eliminates poten-tiometer adjustments andanalog velocity loop drift foroptimal control.

The MOT-201 is a singlewidth module which is idealfor applications using onlyencoder feedback. It hastwo encoder inputs andoutputs a ±10 V velocity orcurrent command formaximum flexibility. TheMOT-202 is a double widthmodule with all the featuresof the MOT-201 plus aresolver input with threephase output. This allowsthe MOT-202 to use thecomplete line of ModiconCyberline amplifiers, motorsand cables. The resolver(usually mounted on theservo motor) provides feed-back for position, velocity, and commutation. Theencoder feedback can beused as position, velocity,or secondary feedback tocoordinate motion.

Together with the ModiconMicro and Modicon 984-120Compact, the A120 Series I/Ois a simple cost-effectivesolution for micro-to smallPLC applications, now andinto the future.

Simple and securefitting

Throughout design anddevelopment, Modicon controller features focus onmaking fitting and connectionwork as simple and secure aspossible. You simply mountthe subracks on DIN rail andinsert the modules, press forconnection to the bus, and

screw the holding fastener toprovide a vibration-resistantfit. You can mount subracksside by side without cables,or in two tiers utilizing onecable.

Programming tools — Hand Held Programmeror Modsoft Lite On-line/Off-line software

Hand HeldProgrammer (HHP)

Specifically designed as a lowcost programming tool for theModicon Micro, this hand helddevice receives its powerdirectly from either Modbusport on the Micro. The HHPcan configure, program, andmonitor your application, including all ladder elements, data registers, implementingthe high speed I/O Expansionlink, addressing any A120Series I/O and entering andtroubleshooting any ASCIImessaging.

Never before has a handheldprogrammer offered moresupport features for both theprogramming and trou-bleshooting of micro PLCs.

Configuration modeallows the user to select fromdefault configurations for communication port parame-ters and I/O addressing. Orthe user can customize theconfiguration by editing communication port parame-ters and I/O addressingoptions. From this mode, theuser can also start and stopthe controller, as well as clearmemory.

Password Mode securesaccess to the HHP. From thismode the keyswitch andpasswords can be enabledand disabled. The keyswitch, when enabled, requires aphysical key for changing theHHP from Program andMonitor access to Monitoronly. When enabled, thepassword will create 3 levelsof access that allows monitor-ing only, monitoring with theability to change data andforce I/O, and total access tothe functionality of the HHP.

Ladder Logic mode pro-vides single element ladderlogic programming with a fourby eleven node view of aladder network mimic (full net-work size is seven high byeleven wide). This viewindicates power flow andwhether the node is occupiedby a ladder element, verticalor horizontal short, or coil. Thisis accomplished by splittingthe four by twenty segmentLCD screen, providing theladder logic mimic on the leftwhile leaving a four by ninesegment work area which fullydisplays the network number, the node number, and up to athree node high ladder ele-ment (i.e., math functionblock) at the same time.

The user navigates throughthe ladder mimic with thecursor controls. As the cursor

moves to a node, the actualelement (N.O. Contact, Coil,Timer, etc.) in its full represen-tation, or nothing if it is empty,is displayed in the work area.If the node is empty, a newelement can be entered fromthe dedicated key pad on theHand Held Programmer. If thenode is already occupied itcan be monitored or changed.

There is a Data modefor entering any registerinformation. This mode can bereached from the initial menuor the user can toggle to thismode by pressing the DATAkey from the Ladder Logicprogramming mode. This isparticularly handy when pro-gramming Timers, Counters,Math Functions, etc., where itis most convenient to enter theparameters at the time ofprogramming the function. If

this is done, the HHP willremember the register numberthe cursor was on. By press-ing the GET key, the usersignals the HHP to display thatregister and its contents. Atthis point any new registerinformation can be entered. When satisfied, the user canreturn to the Ladder Logicmode by again pressing theDATA key. Up to four registersat a time can be displayed ina number of differentrepresentations.

When using the HHP toprogram ASCII characterstrings in the Micro, the HHPcan be switched to SimpleASCII Slave mode whichallows the user to see anyASCII string programmed asan ASCII message display. This unique capability makesprogramming and trouble-shooting ASCII messagingeasy.

In the Computer Transfermode, the HHP will be ableto act as a program storagedevice for transfer of programsbetween a DOS compatiblecomputer with the ModiconModsoft or Modsoft Lite programming software and a controller. Programs devel-oped on Modsoft can bedownloaded into the HHP. The HHP can be carried out toa controller on the factory flooror at a remote site and theprogram then can be down-loaded to the target controller. This also works in the oppositedirection. After entering a newprogram or editing an existingone, the HHP can upload theprogram into its internal mem-ory for transportation back tothe DOS work station where itcan be uploaded to Modsoftfor documentation andarchiving.

Micro/984-120 Compact SystemConfigurations

Linear configurationsThe AS-HDTA-200 (a.k.a.DTA 200) is the primarybase plate for mounting 1CPU and up to 3 I/O mod-ules. The DTA 200 sub-rackor a Micro CPU 512/612can be expanded by amaximum of three DTA 201expansion sub-racks. Thisallows expansion to themaximum of 18 I/O slots onthe 984-120 Compact and15 on the Micro (256 discreteinputs/outputs, any mix). The DTA 202 expansionsubrack provides two slotsfor I/O modules and mustbe the last rack in a 2, 3, or 4 rack linear system.(One DTA 202 sub-rack per system; only on a linearconfiguration.
