WORDS FROM OUR PRESIDENT - Marjorie Reis

Greetings fellow MICLites! It is hard to believe Fall is just around the corner, especially with the unusually hot summer we’ve had this year. Nevertheless, the beginning of our Fall semester is close at hand. I hope all of you had a nice, relaxing summer and are ready to come back to MICL to experience some great classes.

The Curriculum Committee has been working hard planning some exciting new classes for the Fall semester. The old favorites remain of course such as Travels Around the World, What in the World, The Writers’ Workshop, Bridge, Birding-The Big Year and Friday at the Movies. There are also new classes on the horizon for sessions A, B & C. Have you been wondering how to operate all those electronic gadgets you own? We have a class for you! Gadgets aren’t your thing? Well how about Alexander Hamilton? You undoubtedly have heard all the hype about the Broadway musical, Hamilton. What was so fascinating about Hamilton that he interests all ages today? Join us in A Session for the class, Hamilton, to find out! Maybe a variety of topics is what you are looking for…. well how about some guitar music or perhaps Potpourri? Mind you, those classes are just in A session. We also have some exciting new classes coming up in B & C sessions. How about The Beatles? Yes, those Beatles! Or Secrets of U.S, History or Classic Comedians? What about TED Talks or Art Potpourri, Recent Modern History or Music Appreciation? And finally, something we all need in order to survive in our world today, a class on Mental Health! As you can see by the assortment we have planned for you, variety is what we were aiming for. I hope all of you will give these new classes a try. I know we get in a rut and tend to always attend our old favorites, but who knows you just might discover a new favorite with all the variety we are offering this semester.

I encourage all of you, new members included, to get involved. There are many ways you can volunteer in MICL. If you’ve done some traveling this summer, volunteer to give a presentation on your trip. If a class coordinator asked you to give a presentation in their class, give it a try. Speaking before a group not your thing? There are still many ways you can volunteer. Lend a hand in the kitchen or at potlucks or bring snacks for break. Help someone with mobility problems navigate our parking lot. Stick around to help put chairs back in order after class or just simply ask if there is anything you can do to assist? We are what makes MICL work. All jobs large or small is what makes us successful. So, join in the fun! The rewards are satisfying and you will know you helped contribute to what keeps us going year after year.

Finally, don’t forget registration is coming up on Wednesday, August 23 from 9:00 to 11:30. Hope to see

Fall, 2017 - A August 28, 2017 through September 29, 2017 Check out Page 4 for exact schedules.

• TRAVELS AROUND THE WORLD Monday Morning - Let yourself experience the travel delights and occasional frustrations of MICL members and selected guests on their journeys by car, RV, rail, ferry, riverboat, ocean liner, airplane, etc. They will share with us, in illustrated detail, their explorations of places far and near, exotic and familiar. Whether you are a fearless explorer or an armchair traveler, join us in a cozy classroom setting to experience vicariously their wondrous tales and adventures Expand your horizons and brush up on world geography. Questions and comments are encouraged.

• GUITARA IN SPAIN Monday Afternoon - Eight classes trace the history of what we know today as the Spanish classical guitar from its humble beginnings in the 16th Century Vihuela through the 20th Century. Classical guitarist, Julian Bream, plays the music of each period, explains the changes to the instrument, and discusses their effects on technique. Scenes move through many of Spain’s diverse regions and cultures, capturing a sense of the Spanish people in their daily lives, work, and pleasures over 500 years. We see Granada’s Alhambra and gypsy quarters, the great cathedral in Sevilla, flower-filled patios of Cordoba, the Prado Museum in Madrid, a Basque village in the Pyrenees—locations which are frequently used as settings for Bream’s superb performances of much of Spain’s greatest music for the guitar. Look, listen, and learn – effortlessly!

• HAMILTON Tuesday Morning - We’ll listen to the music of the block- buster rap musical “Hamilton” as we read the score on the big screen. Then we’ll fill in the details of the life of Hamilton with discussion and elucidation of the book by Ron Cher- now, upon which the play itself is directly based; videos, etc. also. You will never look at American history, the $10 bill, or rap music the same again. Not to be missed. Rumors are that the newly-created “MICL’s Ol’ Rappas” may make occasional appearances

• TED TALKS Tuesday Afternoon - What is a TED Talk? TED is a nonprofit devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks (18 minutes or less). TED began in 1984 as a conference where Technology, Entertainment and Design converged, and today covers almost all topics — from science to business to global issues. Each class will feature two talks. Each one starting with a brief introduction about who the speaker is, followed by the video and then an invigorating discussion of the topic presented in the video.

• POTPOURRI Wednesday Morning - As the name implies, this class will include, as it has in past years, an agglomeration of topics chosen to be of interest to MICL members. Presentations will be delivered by a variety of individuals selected as knowledgeable in their area of experience and expertise. Curriculum details for this session will be published prior to our first class. We look forward to the opportunity to provide a wide array of presenters. Join us for what will be an interesting and educational session.

• BEGINNER'S BRIDGE Thursday Afternoon - Bridge is a social game. It is stimulating, motivating, exciting, and fascinating. We specialize in taking the absolute beginner and introducing them to a new world of fun. No experience necessary. If you know or would like to learn to play please join us.

• Don't forget our MICL’s Prized REGULARS. YOUNG AT HEART (Tue. & Thu. Early morning), WRITING IT DOWN! (Wed. p.m.), WHAT IN THE WORLD (Thu. a.m.) and FRIDAY AT THE MOVIES (Fri. a.m.)
