Over 80 players were in the field to try andcapture a chance to play in this year’s U.S.Senior Open hosted by Omaha CountryClub in Omaha Nebraska.

The competition here was tough, with fourplayers tied for “Medalist” shooting roundsof 70, five more players shooting 71 and sixplayers shooting 72.There were only two spots open in this qual-ifier so the four “medalist” had a playoff todetermine who qualified and who receivedalternate spots.

July 11 marks the first day of the SeniorOpen so the qualifiers here today will bemaking quick plans for a trip to Omaha.

Eric Dovre Captures2013 Syron Memorial Tournament

Pontiac Country Club • Pontiac, Michigan • July 4 – 6, 2013

The annual Frank Syron Memorial Tournament is at Pontiac CountryClub every Forth of July weekend. The finest Amateur golfers in thestate compete in the three-day, 54-hole event.

It is a tribute to Frank Syron, who passed away in 1969 at the age of69. He was a tireless promoter of the game, back in the days whengolf wasn’t as popular as it is now. He would put on free exhibitionswith the top players of the day such as Byron Nelson, JimmyDemaret, Ed Furgol and Walter Burkeno to encourage people toexperience the game.

Frank Syron came to Michigan in 1918 and accepted a job as a cad-die master at Bloomfield Hills Country Club. He moved to OrchardLake Country Club as head Pro in 1926. While there, among thepeople he taught was the former Olympic standout and future three-time U.S. Women’s Open Champion, Babe Didrikson Zaharias.

He made a big career move in 1941 when he and his wife purchaseda run down little course called Pontiac Country Club. Six decadeslater the Syron Family hosts this tournament not as a revenue boost-er, but rather as a testimonial to the man that started it all with thelove of the game of golf.

This year was much like every year with all the top players in thefield, warm weather conditions and a competitive finish!

At the end of the first 18 holes Eric Dovre fired a round of 69 fol-lowed by Scott Jaschuk, Andy Alvey, Sean Friel and Nick Robesonwith rounds of 70.

When the second finished, Eric had a slim lead standing at 142 fol-lowed by Matthew Sheperd at 143. Tom Daigle Jr., Scott Jaschukand Anthony Sorentino were two shots back at 144.

In the final round Eric just took control of the tournament by firinga round of 67 to capture the trophy by five shots over Jaschuk andDaigle.

Three years ago this great tournamentmoved south for a little change in venue andreturned this year to their northern homewhere the players from all over the statewere greeted with open arms by DeanPaesens (Eagle Glen Golf Club) and JoeSchumer (The Pines Golf Club) along withtheir staff.

Both golf courses were in fabulous shapeand gave these players a good challenge tobe this years match play champions.

The weather was not quite as friendlythough, as cool damp conditions moved infor most of the tournament but that didn’thurt the scores as there were some excellentrounds of golf played making for some greatqualifying scores to set up the match playcompetition!

Qualifying Rounds

Championship Division: Josh Mitroka gotthe first round under way with an excellentround of 69 at The Pines Golf Club followedby Tony Mango at 70 and James Uelmenwith 71.

In the second round at Eagle Glen Golf Clubit was Bill Zylstra taking low honors with a67 followed by Greg Davies (70), AndyAlvey (71) and Mike Horn with 71.

With the qualifying rounds in the books itwas Josh Mitroka and Bill Zylstra leadingthe way with a tie at 141 followed by TonyMango at 142 and Greg Davies at 145.

Josh Mitroka would claim the “TheMedalist Honors” for qualifying as he hadthe low score at The Pines Golf Club, whichhad a higher degree of difficulty between thetwo venues.

Senior Championship Division: BobDexter would claim low honors the first dayat Eagle Glen with a solid round of 70 fol-

lowed by Mike Grace (71), Robert Klingbeiland Mike LaPoe at 73.

Second round action at The Pines foundRobert Klingbeil leading the charge with 71,Mike LaPoe and Leo Martin shooting 74 andBob Dexter at 75.

Robert Klingbeil would claim the “MedalistHonors” with a total qualifying score of 144and rounding out the top four seeds wouldbe Bob Dexter with 145, Mike LaPoe (147)and Art Szarejko at 150.

Senior Championship Division: The superseniors (65 an older) were not going be overlooked during the qualifying rounds as therewas some excellent scores to show howgood these gentlemen can play. With the useof forward tees and friendly yardages theseguys proceeded to shoot lights out and LarryHogard got off to a bang at Eagle Glenshooting 66! Jim Novar would follow at 70,Claude Johnson (72) and Cliff Davis at 73.

Second round action found more of the samewith Dick Blank turning in the low round atThe Pines with 76, Hogard (78), ClaudeJohnson (78) and Jim Novar at 78.

Larry Hogard claimed the “Medalist” tro-phy with a total score of 144, Jim Novar at148, Claude Johnson 150, Dick Blank (155)and Tim Burns at 155.

Match Play CompetitionThe old saying holds true when it comes tomatch play competition, “Anything CanHappen,” and this year was no exception.

In the three divisions, only Larry Hogard(Top Seed/Medalist) of the super senior divi-sion made it to the final match as players inother divisions came from out of the pack tomarch through brackets and provide someexcellent drama in the final stages of thematch play competition.

Super Senior Division: Larry Hogard andClaude Johnson marched their way throughthe bracket to face each other in the finalmatch. Like all the final matches this year, they were very competitive with each playertrading punches and taking turns to have aslight lead in the match. At the end of 17holes of play the match stood even.

On the final hole, both players had excellenttee shots and played their second shots on tothe green with both players in position towin the match or tie and move into extrasudden death holes or lose.

Both players had difficult putts. Claude wasaway and made a fine two-putt to secure par, forcing Hogard to make his putt in order winand Larry provided the drama by sinking thetesty 12 footer to capture the win and defendhis title from 2012.

Senior Division: Robert Klingbeil got off togreat start by winning his first two matchesbefore he was upset by Tom Janicki 2up.Tom would lose his next match to Dale Robbwho moved into the finals to face BobDexter. Bob won his first three matches andwould get into the finals after his opponentin the semi-final match WD from competi-tion.

Like the super senior final match, both Daleand Bob provided great competition, dramaand entertainment to the spectators. With thematch even on the 17th hole, both playersplayed their tee shots to the middle of thegreen and facing very-very long putts. Dalemade a great two putt for par but Dextermade his putt to take the lead going into thefinal hole.

Both players would par the final hole givingDexter the trophy and plenty of excitingmemories from a great match with Dale.

Championship Division: This division hadsome great matches right from the get go.Josh Mitroka, the number one seed, marchedhis way to the semi-finals where he wouldface Greg Davies the number four seed and

three-time champion of this state match playtournament. Josh played a great semi-finalmatch but Greg Davies was on his game andwould win this match 3&2. Greg had six orseven birdies in 16 holes, against Josh toclaim his ticket into the final match.

Also making their way to the semi-finalmatches was Siegel Clore the 18 seed andWeston Benzing the 22 seed. Siegel playedsome fantastic golf, eventually beating AndyAlvey in 20 holes to move into the semi-final. Weston had some hard fought battleshimself, taking 20 holes to defeat DavidBartnick in his second match and another 20holes in his fourth match against DeuceSherman. Weston eventually lost his semi-final match against Siegel Clore 2&1 to giveSiegel a shot at Greg Davies in the finals.

In the final match, both Greg and Siegelplayed some great golf with both playershaving a chance to take some control. In the

In the first round of competition, GarrettRank (Canada) and Sam Saunders(Albuquerque, N.M.) set the pace in themorning wave with a rounds of 65 and 66,respectively. You would think the morningwave would be an advantage but the after-noon wave produced the low round of theday.

Eric Sugimoto (San Diego, CA) tied thelowest opening round in the history of theUSAPL with a 7 under par 63. Ian Davis(Edmond, OK) and Rank would be tied forsecond with rounds of 65.

Twenty-nine players shot red numbers thefirst day, forcing everyone in the field tothink low scores in order to make the cutand the match play field of 64.

Michigan had three players competing,Blaze Hogan (Big Rapids), Nathan Clark(Mason) and Nikolaj Brons-Piche fromTraverse City.

Blaze Hogan got off to the best start of theMichigan Three with an even round of 71and tied for 30th. Nathan Clark was +5(T103) followed by Nikolaj Brons-Piche at+7 (T124).

“Medalist” honors with a score of 132, fol-lowed by Ian Davis (Edmond, OK), EricSugimoto (San Diego, CA) and SamHorsfield (United Kingdom).

The Michigan Three had their tournamentcome to an end as they failed to qualify forthe field of 64 and the match play competi-tion. Blaze Hogan from Big Rapids had thebest finish shooting 147 and tied for 78th.

Round One - Match Play

Seems like every major championshipinvolving match play the “Medalist” has adifficult match right out of the gate andmany times never advances to the secondround. Joshua Stone (Stockton, CA) had tosurvive a playoff in the morning, in order toqualify for match play and had to take onGarrett Rank. Rank built a three-hole leadthrough eight holes and then Joshua startedto cut into the lead early on the second nine.Eventually the match became even andJoshua survived by defeating Rank on the19th hole.

Davis, Sugimoto and Horsfield, the othertop seeds all advanced to the second roundby winning 2&1, 6&5 and 3&2, respective-ly.

Round Two - Match Play

Davis, Sugimoto and Horsfield continuedtheir run in the second round and advancedto third round action. Justin Shin fromCanada qualified in the 60th position andhas made a nice run to this point. Justinwon his first match in 19 holes to advance

to the second round and won the secondround match in 20 holes.

Round Three - Match Play

When the third round was completedSugimoto was the only remaining top seed.In other matches, Sam Horsfield wasdefeated by Zecheng Dou (People’sRepublic of China) and Robby Shelton IV(Wilmer, Ala) eliminated Ian Davis. JustinShin also found his dream run come to anend, losing to Jordan Niebrugge fromMequon, WI.

Round Four – Quarter-Final MatchesPlay

Eric Sugimoto, the remaining top seed, won his fourth round match 2&1 toadvance to semi-final round along withMichael Kim (Del Mar, CA), JordanNiebrugge (Mequon, WI) and JamesErkenbeck of San Diego, CA. Kim,Niebrugge and Erkenbeck all recorded a1up victory to advance.

Round Five – Semi-Final Matches Play

In the semi-final matches, JordanNiebrugge squared off against JamesErkenbeck (San Diego, CA). Jordan defeat-ed James 3&2 to earn his ticket into thefinal match. In the other match, it wasMichael Kim facing Eric Sugimoto.Michael took advantage of the opportunityand won the match 4&3 to face Jordan inthe finals.

Round Six – Final Match Play

The final 36-hole match started out in aback and fourth affair with neither playerreally taking control and each holding briefshort leads. It wasn’t until the final 18-holeswhen things started to change, when Jordanslowly built a four-hole lead. Michael did-n’t go quietly, though, as he fought back toa one-hole deficit. The match came down tothe last hole and Jordan came out on top towin championship.
