MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY

According to the CDC, while many driving deaths are due to the use of alcohol, driving while distracted is the leading cause of death related to automobile

crashes.

Lets Watch a Video about Distracted Driving:

https://app.discoveryeducation.com/search?Ntt=danger+behind+the+wheel

Take note during the video of different types of distractions mentioned

Page 14: MICHIGAN MERIT HEALTH LESSON PLAN UNIT 4:SAEFTY LESSON 1:WHAT IS KILLING US? By: Sam Tallidis.

DISTRACTED DRIVING

Distracted driving is any activity that can pull a drivers attention away while driving.

All distractions endanger the safety of the driver, passengers, and bystanders.

EXAMPLES:

Texting Using a cell phone/smart phone

Eating and drinking Talking to passengers

Grooming (nail polish) Reading (maps)

Using navigation system Adjusting radio, AC, CD player

Page 15: MICHIGAN MERIT HEALTH LESSON PLAN UNIT 4:SAEFTY LESSON 1:WHAT IS KILLING US? By: Sam Tallidis.

DISTRACTED DRIVING

Because text messaging requires visual, manual, and cognitive attention from the driver, it is by far the most alarming distraction.

LET”S TAKE A CLASS POLL: SEE MI MERIT PP

SAFETY POLICIES

More and more, states are enacting safety laws regarding texting and cell phone use while driving.

Some states allow police officers to stop drivers who are using cell phones (City of Chicago uses cameras)

However, we are not anywhere close to the level of compliance with these laws as we are with seat belts.

THINK ABOUT IT

Why do you think people continue to choose to use cell phones

while driving?

What do you think it will take to get people, adults, and teens, to

take this dangerous behavior seriously?

CLOSURE

National Highway Traffic Safety Administrations slogan is:

One Text Or Call Could Wreck It All

Homework:

Create a slogan similar to this one, regarding motor vehicle safety

Investigate the Michigan State Law and consequences for breaking the law regarding phone use while driving. Then, respond to the reflection question:

Do you think our state laws regarding distracted driving are adequate? Too severe? Too lenient? Explain your answer.
