1 Source: U.S. Department of Agriculture, Economic Research Service. 2 Value of agricultural sector production is the gross value of the commodities and services produced within a year. Net value-added is the sector's

contribution to the National economy and is the sum of the income from production earned by all factors-of-production, regardless of ownership.

Net farm income is the farm operator's share of income from the sector's production activities. The concept presented is consistent with that

employed by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. 3 A positive value of inventory change represents current-year production not sold by December 31. A negative value is an offset to production from

prior years included in current-year sales.

10 FIELD CROPS MICHIGAN AGRICULTURAL STATISTICS 2017-2018

Field Crops

Growing Season Weather Summary Dr. Jeff Andresen, Michigan State University

The 2017 growing season was warmer and wetter than

normal in most areas. Crops in some areas were hurt by

extended dryness during the latter part of the summer and by

excessive rainfall late in the season elsewhere. The preceding

winter was also milder and wetter than normal. The statewide

mean temperatures was 26.8°F (6.6°F above normal), and the

average total precipitation was 7.1” (1.79” above normal). It was

the 6th warmest winter on record.

Precipitation totals from mid-March through mid-April

ranged from less than 2.0” to more than 6.0” (more than 200%

of normal), and soils by were left at field capacity to saturation

by mid-April. The first week of May began an extended period

of below normal temperatures. Widespread frost and freezing

temperatures on the mornings of the 8th and 9th damaged some

fruit and vegetable crops. Rainfall hindered spring fieldwork.

After a period of summer-like weather the third week of May,

the last week of the month had cool, unsettled weather that

persisted into early June. While some northern and southeastern

regions continued to experience persistent rainfall and spring

fieldwork delays, many others saw an extended break in the wet

weather and had rapid planting progress.

During June, weather conditions varied widely. Storms and

heavy rains in mid-June caused flooding and crop damage in

central sections of the Lower Peninsula. Many southern sections,

however, were repeatedly missed by the precipitation and had

gradual development of moisture stress. By late June

southeastern sections were categorized by the U.S. Drought

Monitor as ‘Abnormally Dry’. Precipitation totals for June

ranged from less than 1.5” to more than 10.0”. Monthly mean

temperatures were close to normal. During July, monthly rainfall

totals ranged less than 2.0” to more than 6.0”. Mean

temperatures were close to normal across central and southern

sections and slightly below normal across the north. This

weather combination favored growth and development of most

spring-planted annual crops.

Cooler and drier than normal weather prevailed the last half

of August and early September Mean temperatures for August

ranged from near normal to more than 4°F below normal. Given

the cooler temperatures, crop growth and development lagged

behind normal in many areas. Rainfall for the month ranged

from less than 2.0” to more than 6.0”. Drier than normal weather

across sections of southern and central Lower Peninsula led to

moisture stress and early senescence of crops. Late September

was abnormally hot and dry. This led to rapid maturation and

senescence of most annual crops and favored early harvest

activities. Mean temperatures in September were 3-6°F above

normal. Precipitation totals were 1.0-3.0” below normal. Since

early July, rainfall totals in some central portions of the Lower

Peninsula were less than 4.0” (less than 50% of normal),

resulting in low levels of soil moisture and significant water

stress for many crops. The dryness delayed winter wheat

planting in some areas due to insufficient soil moisture for

germination. At the end of September, the US Drought Monitor

categorized most of the southern half of Lower Michigan as

‘Abnormally Dry’; south central sections were at ‘Moderate

Drought’.

Heavy rainfall occurred in the period of October 5-15, with

totals of 3.0-6.0” across many portions of the state. Some

southwestern sites recorded more than 8.0”. This led to a halt of

fall harvest and other fieldwork. The precipitation infiltrated the

rooting zone, relieved long term stress for perennial crops, and

began seasonal moisture recharge. The late season moisture also

benefitted germination of recently-planted winter wheat. For

many areas the first freeze of the season was at least two weeks

later than normal. Precipitation for October ranged from less

than 4.0” to more than 10.0” across southwestern sections the

Lower Peninsula (up to 300% of normal). For the state as a

whole, October was the wettest on record. Mean temperatures

for the October were about 2°F-6°F above normal.

Agricultural Statistics Districts

The State is divided into nine Agricultural Statistics Districts to

make data comparison easier. An Agricultural Statistics District

is a contiguous group of counties having relatively similar

agricultural characteristics. Each district has within it more

homogeneous agriculture than the State as a whole. They are

numbered from north to south and west to east.
