New for 2011Everyone knows about the importance of the four Cs when it comes to diamonds – cut, colour, clarity and carat. Well now there’s a fifth C – country of origin and specifically canadian. Michel Jewellers is delighted to welcome the renowned Maple Leaf Diamonds range. Maple Leaf Diamonds are mined in the Ekati mine, Canada’s first diamond mine located in the snowfields of the North West territory. These superb stones are among the finest quality in the world and each is laser engraved with a unique tracking number, the CanadaMark TM

symbol and the Maple Leaf insigna. These authentications signify the diamond is of Canadian origin and has met strict quality standards of colour, clarity, symmetry and finish.

Our commitment to quality, service and value remains our firm focus as well as our support of local charities, businesses and jobs – such as the local companies that produce this catalogue, all 100,000 copies of it! We’re still here because of you and with your support, we’ll be here for another fifty years.

Welcome to the 2011 Michel Jewellers 50th Anniversary Catalogue.

I cannot begin to express how proud and happy my staff and I are to be celebrating our 50th anniversary and to be celebrating it with you, our customers and friends.

So much has happened since we first opened our doors in 1961. It’s impossible to list everything that’s happened in that time period, but just some of our highlights are: introducing new and exciting jewellery designers and watch brands never before available in Ireland; winning local and international awards including being the first ever Irish winner in the UK & Ireland Retail Jeweller Awards; creating the Bling, Bling Schools Jewellery design competition for Cork’s European Capital of Culture in 2005 and refurbishing our iconic building in Patrick Street and its contribution to the revitalisation of Patrick Street as Cork’s premier shopping street. One of my standout personal memories is the day in 2001 when a long-standing customer brought in an item he’d found for help with its identification. I recognised it as an early iron age solid gold Torc of historic significance and it now forms part of the National Museum’s permanent collection. My small role in the Torc’s preservation for future generations continues to give me great pleasure. I would also like to pay tribute to my staff both current and past who have played such an important role in our fifty year story; their enthusiasm,

THEN AND NOWIn 1961 the population of the Republic of Ireland was 2,818,000: in the latest 2006 census it was 4,239,848. In 1961 the population of Cork city and county was 330,443: in the latest 2006 census it was 481,295.

Telefís Éireann’s (later RTÉ) first television broadcast was New Year’s Eve 1961 and life was never the same again!

The 1961 All-Ireland Champions were Tipperary (hurling) and Down (football).

Irish-American John F. Kennedy became President of the United States.

The Beatles performed for the first time at the Cavern Club, Liverpool.

Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first human in space.

Ireland submitted the first ever application to join the then European Economic Community.

President John F. Kennedy announced the Apollo Programme and his goal to put a man on the Moon before the end of the decade.

As MAD Magazine pointed out on its cover for the March 1961 issue, 1961 was the first “upside-up” year (i.e. one in which the numerals that form the year look the same as when the numerals are rotated upside down) since 1881 and the last until 6009! Maybe Michel Jewellers will celebrate that date too!
