Michael Harris to lead IUK as new chancellor

Incoming Chancellor Michael Harris joined Indiana University Kokomo as the8th person to serve as chief administrator in the campus' 65-year history,and is prepared to tackle challenges, champion initiatives, and build uponpast achievements for future growth, success, and academic excellence.

Harris, Ph.D. '93, brings academic and leadership experience, knowledge,and fervor, which he intends to utilize to enhance academic excellence andcommunity engagement. He recently served as provost and vice presidentfor academic and student affairs and professor of public policy for the pastthree years at Kettering University in Flint, Michigan, where he madesignificant contributions.

"My number one goal is to get to know people and issues facing thecampus, and then begin to articulate a unified vision," Harris said, alsoprofessor of public and environmental affairs. "I'm really looking forward tounderstanding the opportunities we face, what we should be doing about it,and moving ahead to make it happen."

More specifically, it is a priority of Harris' to continue the enhancement ofstudent retention and success. He said it is important to balance learning,research, and service to provide the full baccalaureate and graduateexperience for students.

In addition, he plans to maintain and nurture community partnerships - within the private sector, city government, and nonprofitorganizations - for the economic and social well being of the region.

"For me, I enjoy challenges," Harris said. "My plan is to engage in a very positive, invigorating movement and build on IUKokomo's past. This is a great opportunity for all of us."

Harris earned a bachelor's degree in economics and business administration from Bar-Ilan University in Israel in 1982 and amaster's degree in public management and budgeting from Tel Aviv University in Israel in 1986. He earned his Ph.D. from IU in1993. He is also a graduate of the Harvard Graduate School of Education's Institute for Educational Management and theManagement Development Program. He and his wife, Tali, have three sons.

He succeeds Stuart Green, who served as interim chancellor for the past two years and held numerous administrativepositions on campus during his 38-year tenure. Green retired on June 30.

Indiana University Kokomo serves a seven county, primary service area in north central Indiana. The campus offers more than40 academic programs including four graduate degrees.
