Transcript of Michael Gibbs Ignite Presentation
On June 12, 2010 a young man was playing a sport he has always loved. He position on the team was a wide receiver. The offense breaks the huddle and they called a play that they have run plenty of times. It was a play that would send the receiver across the middle for
a reception. The Quarterback calls hike and the play is in progress. The wide out ran 7 yards and cut to the middle. The QB fires the ball to him. The wide out catches the ball and before he can protect himself he is hit in the chest. The player falls to the ground and is
unconscious. He was actually more than unconscious, he died right there on the field.

• Slide 1: Hook/attention grabber• short story about a guy who dies on the football field
The football player that i mentioned was my best friend and cousin Lamont Harry
Lundy Jr. I lost one of my closest friends that night. I remember the call from my other best friend. He called me
and said that Lamont had a football accident while playing. At the time i was
located an hour away from where he was playing. I went to pick up my other friend and we drove out there to the
hospital to find out that he was already gone. I think my heart dropped when
the doctor said he had passed. He would have been 29 years old on
October 14 of this year.

• Slide 2: Hook/attention grabber• Introduce that player as your cousin and tell the story of that night
If We don’t provide our football players with the
proper protective gear and training, there will always be
serious injuries that sometimes will lead to fatal
accidents.

• Slide 6: Call to Adventure (pages 38-39)• By learning about my experience, it can help families, coaches and children that do want to play the sport more
equipped and prepared. Safety first!
3 Main Points
•Re-design equipment for better protection
•New Training techniques
•Research into what hits and movements cause certain injuries
Sunday, October 13, 13
• Slide 7: Preview the three main points that will support your big idea• Redesign of equipment can further prevent serious injuries. Teaching new tackling and defensive techniques is
another way to help. More research into what causes these serious injuries can help lower the incident rate.
Let’s design better protective gear!!

• Slide 15: Factual or emotional evidence• Doctor Opinions
“It’s important to teach the right fundamentals at the
earliest ages,” Goodell said, standing near midfield on the Centreville turf. “That stays with them throughout their
careers, whether it ends in the NFL or whether it ends in
college or high school. It’s important for what we do on the NFL level to do it right, to have the proper techniques.”

injuries that sometimes will lead to fatal accidents.
Lamont was a true friend and a reliable person. He did so much for other people. His death was so sudden and surprising. He was just playing a sport that he loved since i have known him. When i found out that he had passed, my heart dropped and i dropped to my knees. I felt a piece of me die that day. That week following his death was the hardest week of my life. We did everything we could to show people how much he meant to us. We held a candle light vigil. We had t shirts made. We through a big cookout to get family and friends together. It was a devastating experience and i would hate for anyone else to experience all the emotions i felt that week and even feel today. Football safety needs to be improved.
