Amsterdam29 October 2008After nearly four months of freelance work, travelling and regeneration, I’ll start my 4-month-internship at Lava grafisch ontwerpers in Amster-dam on next Monday. Look-ing forward to! But due to the housing situation up there, I’m still looking for a kamer.

1. November 2008Nachdem ich mich nach Ende meines Praktikums mit einem Bericht samt Präsentation in Konstanz zurückmelden muss, versuche ich an dieser Stelle meine Gedanken und Ideen festzuhalten und etwas zu sortieren. Falls es unabhängig davon jemanden interessiert was ich hier treibe, freut mich das natürlich. Erster Eindruck Amsterdam, hier geht es los.

Lava grafisch ontwerpers

Lava was established in 1990. The current direction includes founder and creative direc-tor Hans Wolbers (the Neth-erlands, 1965) and strategy director Paul Hughes (Ireland, 1974).

Lava’s foundations began in magazine design, which evolved very quickly to include more than just the form of a maga-zine but also the content of the magazine. This approach to editorial design focused Lava on telling a story in a visual way and brought with it a dynamic way of working. From the motto ‘a new issue every month’ arose a dynamic work-ing method, where an ongoing balance is sought between con-sistency and change - renewal while conserving recognition of an identity. This has eventually developed into a unique design vision, what we call the five Cs: collaboration > content > con-sistency > change > concept.

Digitale Illustration.Da die Themen der Voträge sehr breitgefächert sind und auch kurz vor der Veranstal-tung Änderungen erfahren können, entschieden wir uns für abstrakte Illustrationen, die keinerlei Bezug zu einem bestimmten Thema oder Spre-cher haben sollten.

Beispiele für Doppel- seiten der Broschüre. Die Illustrationen werden mit einer Art Band verbunden, dass sich durch den gesamten Reader zieht.

PINC. Next Generation

Neben der PINC- Konferenz soll eine ähnliche Veranstaltung für Kinder und Jugendliche entstehen. Zunächst befassten wir uns mit der Logoentwicklung.

Hi xxx,Hierbij de printbare posters.Een volledig A3 en een met een wit randje van 5 mm, zodat scholen deze eventueel zelf kunnen printen. Dit is natuurli-jk niet de beste optie, omdat je dan geen zicht hebt op de kwaliteit, kleuren etc.

Ik zou gewoon een handel posters laten drukken bij zoiets als Studio 17. Is niet duur. En ze dan naar scholen opsturen.

Corporate film

Für die neue Lava-Website soll ein 60-sekündiges “Wat is Lava”-Filmchen entstehen, dass Lavas Arbeitsweise kurz und bündig vorstellt. An ein paar Einstellungen durfte ich mi-tarbeiten. So bestand mein Job darin, den Lava-Schriftzug aus mehreren Foamboards (leichte Platten mit Hartschaumkern) zu basteln und die Lettern so aneinander zu reihen, dass sie auch dem Amsterdamer Wind bei Außendrehs standhalten würden.

INSITE is het grootste chris-telijke jongerenblad van Ned-erland dat je stof tot nadenken geeft. Een blad over het Leven zelf. Een blad over God, over jou en de wereld om je heen.

Vor Weihnachten kam das Neujahrsmailing von Vitae. Ein DIN A3 Poster zum Thema „Nachhaltigkeit“. Verschickt wurde es gefaltet auf A5. Ich war für die Illustra-tionen zuständig.

Das Konzept von ku: besteht darin eine Kombination aus Straßenbeleuchtung und Stadt-vogelhaus zu schaffen. Dieses Stadtmöbel wirdanstelle von bestehenden10 m hohen Laternenmasten in der Innenstadt errichtet.Über eine Fremdfirmawerden die ku:s per Steiger einmal wöchentlich angefahren und gewartet: Eiaustausch, Reinigung und Futterauffül-lung. Als „Münchner Gold“ findet man den wertvollen Taubendung im Regal von Gartenfachhandlungen wieder.

Ich entwickelte das Logo und die Verpackung für Münchner Gold.

Winter Camp Last few weeks I have been working on the corporate for Winter Camp 09. An Amsterdam based four-day unconference with a dozen networks (each of which has 5-15 people) working on their specific current topic.

Winter Camp is an event, organized by the Institute of Network Cultures and will take place 3-7 March ‘09 in Amsterdam. Network Cultures Winter Camp will be a mix of presentations and work spaces with an emphasis on getting things done. It will be a four-day program of work spaces and plenary presentations, in which a dozen networks (each of which has 5-15 people) can work on their specific current topics.

First idea – shown on the left – was to use free font types, to cut them into pieces and create a new outstandig corporate font.

Later we experimented with ASCII-fonts and 3d-shapes.

We hebben een ASCII logo gemaakt van Wintercamp. Wij vragen ons af of Wintercamp één woord is of twee ... Graag jullie reactie over deze diverse varianten in zwart/wit.

Het programmaboekje is een combinatie van zwart-wit druk-werk en artworks in full-color.We kiezen er uiteindelijk voor om alles te laten drukken bij een drukker en niet te gaan kopiëren bij een copyshop. Qua kosten zal het niet veel verschillen en de omvang van het boekje is te groot om te laten nieten. Dus dit moet machinaal gebeuren.

Unieke en gelimiteerde zeefdrukken. Kunnen worden opgehangen in de ruimtes en kan ook fungeren als banner in Studio K, Stay Okay en andere belangrijke plekken. Tijdens het event kunnen er t-shirts en (laptop) tassen gedrukt worden. We mo-eten ervoor zorgen dat er een zeefdruktafel (of alleen een zeef ) geplaatst kan worden in één van de ruimtes.

hey michael,

i got some pointers about the file for the printers, the file has some lines that will be too fine to print; here’s what she said:

the thin lines within the word wintercamp are too thin to print. the other line thickness is fine for printing of the black (thinner)ink on the pillows.

but the white ink (for T-shirts) is much thicker and paste-like, so there is going to be a problem with the url. can this be bold or another font? also the lines may be a bit thicker, but the previous mentioned lineshave to go.

Could you have a look at this and send the changed files either to me or directly to xxx from Supershirt ([email protected])
