The Balearic Islands are the ideal place for holding congresses and conventions, with their experience, infrastructure and all the incentives necessary to make them the perfect hosts, year after year, for important national and international meetings.

For many years now, we have been working hard to improve and reinforce this segment, with the construction of infrastructures especially designed for these kinds of events.Indeed, Palma’s Palacio de Congresos is currently nearing completion and is destined to become a great congress centre with enormous capacities, thereby enabling Mallorca to be promoted on an international level as the ideal destination for this kind of event.

However, in the meantime, while waiting for the Palacio de Congresos to be finished, various institutions and associations on the islands are working together to ensure the success of events held both in Mallorca and Ibiza, in public or private auditoriums, which, even though they have smaller capacities, are fully adapted to satisfy the needs of all kinds of congresses. Furthermore, the Islands’ own hotel infrastructure includes installations that are ideal for business meetings. As incentive destinations, Mallorca and Ibiza are two of the most attractive places in the Mediterranean. In the Balearic Islands, we are working hard to maintain this level of appeal. Visitors who come to the islands to hold meetings and congresses can, at the same time, enjoy a wealth of additional attractions: an excellent variety of restaurants, shops, golf courses, nautical excursions and a wide range of cultural activities.

biza is renowned throughout the world for the sensation

of freedom that it inspires amongst its visitors, who

experience a different way of spending their time, in

contact with nature and the monuments and history of the island.

The sunsets in Ibiza are the most spectacular in the

Mediterranean. In many parts of the island, gathering to watch

this magical moment becomes a ritual accompanied by music

and good company. The Ses Variades coast, and the Platges de

Compte, Es Vedrá, and Benirrás, together with many other places

on the island, bear witness to this peculiar communion between

man and nature.

This intimate contact must also have been felt years ago by the

various civilisations that have left their mark upon this island,

which still shows traces of its past and interesting archaeological

remains. The Phoenicians were followed by the Carthaginians,

who gave way to the Romans…. The unbeatable situation of the

island, enabling full control of the Mediterranean maritime routes,

led it to be continually invaded by the Vandals, the Byzantines

and the Arabs. Indeed it was the latter, whose agricultural system

was the most widely used for centuries, as well as lending their

style of architecture to many of the typical Ibizan buildings.

Ibiza is a paradise for sports enthusiasts. Its warm,

Mediterranean climate makes it the ideal place for practising

all your favourite sports at any time of year and with a wide

range of possibilities, whether you prefer water sports, such as

waterskiing, sailing, or diving, sports related to nature, such as

rambling or cycling, or any other kind of sport such as golf, tennis

or horse-riding.

A variety of festivals, local fiestas and other cultural events are

held in Ibiza throughout the year. Its traditional festivals comprise

a unique range of celebrations, giving an insight into the island’s

culture. There are also many different flea markets, boot sales

and weekly markets, offering visitors the best and most typical

local products. Most of the village fiestas hold demonstrations

of local handicrafts, such as basket weaving and the making

of shoes and musical instruments, all featuring the lively and

colourful Ibizan folklore.

All these ingredients combine to create an ambience which has

been largely preserved, as tourism has hardly altered the lifestyle

and agricultural labours of the interior of the island, where the

farmers carefully tend their fields and maintain the customs of

their ancestors. Here small flocks of sheep and goats graze in

the lush, green fields of the rural areas of the north of the island

in winter, which contrast with the white blossom of the almond

trees.

Ses Salines, declared a nature Reserve in 1995 and a nature

Park in 2001, are proof of the island’s great natural resources.

Here, local flora and fauna live together in harmony in a rich

ecosystem, where salt is the predominant feature, making the

surrounding landscape and beaches unique.

The Es Vedrà and Es Vedranell nature Reserves and the Illots

de Ponent islands (Cala d’Hort Park) are another example of the

variety of nature that has been preserved on the island. Apart

from their beautiful landscapes, these places are home to birdlife

and have been declared as Specially Protected Area for Birds

by the Eu. The natural wealth of the land is complemented by

that of the sea surrounding it, which provides the ideal setting for

diving enthusiasts.

Ibiza’s Congress Centre is situated a few metres from the town

centre of Santa Eulària des Riu, which lies just a few kilometres

from the island’s port and airport. This modern building positions

the island amongst the leaders in Spanish congressional tourism.

The privileged situation of the Congress Centre and its adaptation

to the climate and traditional architecture of the island, has made

it a clear example of Ibiza’s vocation for opening new roads into

the future and position the island within the MICE sector with a

multipurpose area, ideal for all kinds of events.

We can also find museums and unique establishments well worth

mentioning, amongst which are the Museum of Contemporary Art

of Ibiza, which is situated within the walled area of the city and

the Punic necropolis of Puig des Molins, which was declared

as World Heritage by unESCO, being the largest and best

preserved of the Phoenician-Punic culture. The Fortified City of

dalt Vila, has many attractions for visitors, such as its numerous

bars, restaurants, shops and art galleries. The Phoenician

archaeological site of Sa Caleta has also been declared as World

Heritage by unESCO and is also well worth visiting.

All this and much more we cannot forget the island’s nightlife,

which attracts artistes and personalities from all over the world

makes Ibiza the ideal place to celebrate all kinds of business

events, incentives congresses, or conventions. The island’s

hotels are modern and sophisticated, with a quality of service

comparable with the best in Europe.

Wich steps should we take to extend the tourist season?JR: In some areas of Ibiza, a large number of hotels stay open

during the winter. In order to extend the tourist season, it would be necessary to do the following:- Authorise the construction of golf courses (eg. In Playa d’en Bossa)-Build more marinas - Organise cultural visits (dalt Vila, museums, art galleries etc,etc.)- Improve the island’s gastronomy.- Organise cultural and sporting events.- Allow shops to open all weekend in the winter, or, at least, until 8-9pm on Saturdays ( nB: I refer to boutiques, shoe shops, clothes and accessories shops, etc. etc.

MI: What role do you think local government institutions should play in the development of a strategy for the MICE segment? up to what point should they become involved and how can they help business initiative?JR: Public installations such as exhibition sites, congress centres, pavilions and even theatres should complement private businesses, not compete with themlocal government institutions (Councils and the local Ministry) should work together with the private sector to find ways of using resources more efficiently.MI: What do you consider to be the advantages of the MICE segment?JR: Mallorca, the Canary Islands, cities such as Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia.MI: What new tendencies do you see in the international MICE markets? JR: The last congress that I went to was the CEHAT (Spanish Confederation of Hotels and Tourist Accommodation) in May (19th to 22nd May 2010) in Santiago de Compostela.Tendencies: As far as congresses are concerned: national and internationally renowned speakers, product presentations, business incentives, international events offering an insight into the MICE destination, such as cultural visits (a tour of Santiago and a visit to the Cathedral) gastronomy, fashion-in short, mixing business with pleasure, preventing MICE from being rather tedious and offering an alternative programme for those accompanying the delegates (cultural visits, shopping, leisure, etc.)

MIcE Ibiza: ¿do you think that the traditional “sun and beach” and “party island” concepts have reached their peak in Ibiza? JosÉ RIERA: Although the “sun and beach” concept is successful all over the world and easy to promote to the emerging markets, Ibiza is also renowned on an international level for its music (dance clubs and bars and restaurants associated with beach clubs and chill-out styles), it is necessary to complement this offer with the MICE market, as this will increase the influx of clients all year round and help to improve occupancies during the mid season (June and September) and low season (May and October).MI: Are group sales in Ibiza being managed properly, or should we change the current perception of this market?JR: At the moment there are talks about the Ibiza Convention Bureau including the congresses, incentives and events sector but we need to promote this segment much more aggressively.MI: What role could the MICE segment play in this new strategy?JR: 7 years ago we only had one 5 star hotel and we now have seven 5 star establishments with a total of 542 rooms and 1090 beds. The number of 4 star hotels has also increased considerably over the past few years and there are now 30 of them with approximately 10.000 beds. We also have 17 rural hotels and 6 country houses, offering a total of 403 beds. Ibiza has many lower category hotels too but all offering good quality.The MICE segment would make use of a series of already existing infrastructures, (the 1st phase of the Palacio de Congresos de Ibiza conference centre in Santa Eulalia has been finished and the 2nd phase, including the C’an Ventosa Theatre, exhibition site and sports facilities such as pavilions, etc. is pending construction) which are often not used as much as they should be. These would also provide support to the convention rooms already existing in many tourist establishments, increasing their occupancies and would have a positive influence on additional services such as shopping, restaurants, nautical activities, etc., as well as on the amounts that tourist spend.MI: Whatdo you think about the “inevitable seasonal nature”?

Many of you will know me as representative of one of the most important German Tour Operators (in fact, the most important as far as independent Tour Operators are concerned).

The agency that I represent, Viajes Allsun (with a vaste experience in the organization of groups and events) is very successful as an Incoming Agency for Tour Operators. Therefore, it may seem rather strange that such a well established local Agency, which has enjoyed considerable success year after year and looks set to continue to grow over the next few years, should now be also concentrating on the MICE segment.

However, if we look back over the past few years, the reasons for this decision are easy to understand.

Firstly, Tour Operation and the MICE segment are perfectly compatible, as congresses and incentives, especially, do not depend on school holidays but rather on those times of year when it is possible to offer clients a much more personalised service.

On the other hand, the number of clients who have arrived through Tour Operators during the past few years has decreased, independently of their country of origin.

new technology, the rise in the number of low cost companies and other factors have, without a doubt, contributed to this tendency.

However, if we analyse the MICE segment, we can see that the opposite is happening and that the number of groups, incentives and congresses has steadily grown during these years. The reasons for this are quite obvious.

A destination which is less than two hours away from most of the European capital cities, a mild climate in spring and autumn, (which are precisely the high seasons for MICE), infrastructures of an increasingly higher quality, such as Ibiza’s Congress Hall in Santa Eulalia, the new five star hotels and the spectacular renovation work that has been carried out on many other existing establishments, the landscapes, culture and, of course, Ibiza’s excellent nightlife, have with no doubt contributed to the interest of meeting planners in this fantastic island.

nevertheless, if we want Ibiza to become the most popular destination for the MICE segment, all this is not enough. All

of us, official institutions and private companies, will have to make a great effort to ensure that those clients who visit Ibiza in the low season, also find that the island is much more than they expected.

Ibiza is currently very trendy, but it will depend on us to ensure that this is not just a passing fancy and in order to achieve this, once and forever, we need to position the island ahead of other destinations (near and far) that

represent our strongest competitors.

We certainly have more than enough qualities to achieve this aim.

¿What is Mice?“MICE” is an acronym, which is used internationally in the tourist

industry and is based on the initials of the English words “Meetings

Incentives, Conventions and Events. It also has its humorous side, as

the word is also synonymous with the plural of MOuSE: a lightly ironic

way of describing a group of events and one which unjustly implies a

lack of seriousness.

Although the name MICE is used in Spain, it is more commonly

known worldwide as G&C (Groups and Congresses), CCI or C+C, or

simply Groups. In my opinion, this last word is the most simple, as

well as being the one that most clearly defines the services to which

we refer. It covers any trip (usually organised by professionals) for

whatever kind of group.

¿Why Mice?

The reasons why MICE are especially interesting for the hotel,

restaurant and ancillary services sector are so obvious that the

treatment that this segment has received in Spain in the past and, in

some cases, even today, seems incredible.

These groups contribute to seasonal adjustment, as they are not

so connected (indeed, sometimes quite the opposite) to the tourist

seasons, as is FIT tourism or traditional holidaymakers.

Groups generate more income. Indeed, there are some destinations,

for example, the united States, where hotels rooms are priced at

higher rates per person for groups than for individual clients! Putting

aside these extremes, it is true that groups, and more specifically,

business groups, spend more in hotels, restaurants, etc. Also, the

fact that these expenses are covered by the company, or organisation,

encourages these clients to spend more.

Although the “experts” would have us believe otherwise, groups

usually constitute the basis of the occupancies of many hotels,

which later increase their rates for individual clients, once they have

achieved their minimum numbers. We only have to look at examples

of establishments that are used to working with series (groups that

repeat periodically). Good Revenue Managers are truly enamoured of

MICE, because if they treat this segment properly, they can achieve

considerable improvements in average room rates.

MICE tourism, on the whole, generates a much lower ratio (and

infinitely more justified when the case arises) of complaints and

claims. Groups tend to be more conformist and grateful.

Furthermore, as far as business and multinational company groups

are concerned, the mere fact that a tourist brand or establishment

works with MICE clientele, helps to position them in the market and

enables them to achieve more international awareness. The business

clients of today may be the holidaymakers of tomorrow.

how many Mice?

Although the percentage varies, depending on the interests of the

operating establishment, or company in question, depending on

whether its situation is city-based, rural or resort and depending on

its specific characteristics, according to experts the MICE segment

should account for between 20 and 25% of their total income. This

percentage is, today, higher on the American continent than in

Europe, although the difference tends to diminish as time goes by.

Each owner, Sales director or Sales Manager should carefully analyse

the characteristics of their establishment, its surroundings and the

area in general, and, consequently, plan their MICE objectives on a

short, mid and long term basis. This will, without a doubt facilitate

the achievement of the same, which will result in a more profitable

segment.

Where do Mice travel?

This is the million-dollar question and maybe the most important of

those that concern us. In the first instance, meeting planners travel

all over the world to any place where they can plan their event easily

and in an easily accessible destination which meets a series of

minimum requirements. BuT… there are many more factors to be

taken into consideration, which vary, according to the characteristics

of each group: price, accessibility, availability of technological and

logistic equipment, ancillary services, climate, etc. despite what we

tend to believe, price is not one of the three main factors taken into

consideration when taking decisions.

Who moves Mice?

In the past, the most simple and effective way of contracting MICE was

to contact the most important business travel consortiums (American

Express, lufthansa Citycenter, Carlson-Wagonlit, TQ3, Martiz, PGI,

etc). However, today, due to the delocalisation of the decision-makers

of these consortiums, the constant increase in independent meeting

planners, the increase in implants in companies and the fact that

more and more travel agencies are organising groups, in addition to

their normal business of package holidays, it is very difficult to pinpoint

a single source of origin for groups. Furthermore, even traditional

tour operators and large online travel agencies now have their own

MICE departments, in order to try to capture part of this ever-growing

segment. The best way to develop and increase MICE is to cooperate

personally with meeting planners and ensure an excellent promotion.

The municipality of Santa Eulària des Riu is located on the east side of the island and comprises 2/3 of the island’s coastline, which makes this area warmer. It’s divided into 5 parishes: Santa Eulària, Sant Carles de Peralta, Santa Gertrudis de Fruiteria, jesús and Puig d’en Valls.

The capital of the municipality, Santa Eulària, is 17 km away from the airport

and 10 minutes from the island’s main port, and it’s very accessible from

the main road or from a secondary road that winds along hills and beaches.

AND EVERYTHING IS A STONE’S THROW AWAY.

Santa Eulària has a total surface of 153.48 km2 and 46.164 kms of coastline,

which include 17 incredible beaches where you can relax and enjoy the

benefits of the sun and the ocean. due to the City Council’s firm commitment

to ensure the sustainability of its beaches, 4 of the main beaches have been

granted the quality certificate ISO 14001 – Green Flag and 6 have been

awarded with Blue Flags. The red colour of the soil, rich in iron, contrasts with

the blue waters that surround the coast.

The municipality of Santa Eulària generates the highest percentage of the

fresh produce consumed in the entire island due to the fertility of the land.

Among the pine-covered hills and the cultivated land you can see modern

houses next to traditional ibicencan houses, some of them renovated and

some other ones still preserving the purity of their traditional characteristics.

The only river of the Balearic Islands flows through Santa Eulària. The river

mouth is located at the south end of the promenade that goes along the

seaside and the entire town. From there the Puig de Missa can be seen. It is a

hill crowned by a fortified church from the 16h century that watches over the

river and the town. On this emblematic hill you will also find the Ethnografic

Museum of Ibiza and the Barrau Museum. Walking along the promenade you

will arrive at the Congress Centre of Ibiza, located at the other end.


Santa Eulària is now ready for the business market. More than 900 five star

rooms and 2300 four star rooms and unique agroturisms (boutique hotels in

the country) are available to ensure the success of your event at the Congress

Centre of Ibiza. The centre, inspired by the ibicencan architecture in which

fine materials like stone and wood prevail, has been carefully integrated into

the surrounding pine forest. It is located, of course, a few meters from the sea.


Santa Eulària is the cradle of the hippy movement of the 60s in Ibiza and

nowadays the island combines in perfect harmony its own essence and that

of all the people from around the world who have chosen Ibiza as their place

of residence. The peculiar island style, defined by a freedom atmosphere,

can be experienced at the internationally known hippy markets: las dalias,

Punta Arabí (Es Canar), S’Alamera (located in Santa Eulària’s main street)

and Cala llonga.


Shopping in Santa Eulària is a peculiar experience because of its wide variety

of stores that ranges from modern boutiques featuring the latest fashion trends

to old-fashioned shops where you can find fresh local produce.

Santa Eulària means filling your senses with its magical contrasts. Tasting

its gastronomy is a memorable experience. The ibicencan cuisine uses

only fresh products, straight from the land and the ocean. The main typical

dishes are boiled fresh fish, “arròs de matances” (rice with pork meat), “sofrit

pagès”, “sobrassada” and “botifarra” (sausages) and desserts like “flaó”,

“greixonera”, “bunyols” and “orelletes”. A suitable occasion to try all these

delicious dishes is the Santa Eulària traditional festival (February 12th) and

also the First Sunday of May festival.

These festivities will give you a chance to enjoy in the local cultural traditions

such as horse-drawn carts and vintage car and motorcycle parades, dances

or the locals walking through town displaying their best traditional costumes

and jewellery.

Santa Eulària has one of the 22 Water Sports Resorts in Spain. It offers a wide

variety of sports and ludic activities that will allow you to enjoy both the ocean

and the land (windsurf, sailing, horse riding, kayaking, jet ski, scuba diving,

water skiing…). The island invites you to enjoy, hiking or biking, its fascinating

country routes and to discover the real essence of Santa Eulària.

All have a flexible capacity for between 4 and 5 people, depending upon whether the apartment is large or small.

BAR AND REstAURANtThe bar serves fast food, cocktails and drinks. There is also a cybercafé room and outside terrace with a stage, where a variety of weekly shows are held. The bar opens out onto the rest of the complex by means of a pergola on the terrace, giving easy access to the exterior. Our Migjorn restaurant will not leave you indifferent and you will be able to enjoy the best Mediterranean cuisine in a relaxed and vanguard ambience. The restaurant also serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and is buffet-style, although there is also show-cooking, a room available for reserving events and an outdoor terrace where à la carte meals are served.

sWIMMING pooLs AND spAThere are two outdoor swimming-pools and solarium areas where all kinds of services are available, such as baths, showers, sun-beds, parasols, etc. The first area comprises three swimming-pools: a very large one, a small, shallow one and a hydro-massage pool. The other area comprises two swimming-pools, one medium sized and another shallow pool for children.The Spa is managed by professionals, who will advise you on the different treatments available, such as the therapeutic pool, a cold channel for contrasting temperatures, jacuzzi, therapeutic showers with various treatments, swedish sauna and massage room.

GYMNAsIUMThe Gymnasium offers a variety of different exercises, both cardiovascular and

sUpERMARkEtThe supermarket includes a bakery and sells newspapers and magazines, cold meats and all kinds of food, drinks and alcohol. It is accessible both from the street and from within the complex and is a simple, practical shop, designed for daily use.
