Target

Clearly the highest risk issue in MICE review tomorrow

Much progress and growing team! The depth of dip will be carefully written on data stream… Precious for understanding of rates, etc..

Issues raised: -- heating problem when exciting to 40A (instead of presently 5 A)

==> personnally believe that redesign may be necessary to include more-than-adequate cooling system -- avoid that failure leads to target stuck in beam! + should have a fool-proof indicator that target is in beam position.

Not obvious that test in October will be able to be performed with final system. How far from it will it be? Will it address enough critical issues?

Ennoying questions: TOF2 said to be mid-2008. Can this be brought forward? what will happen with x-ray radiation when we run with RF?

Issue: particles crossing material in the downstream end of the spectrometerthis is a beam of 100-300 MeV/c, all generated with 4T field in spectrometer. How about the size of the hole in the shielding

DAQ and monitoring

two connected issues

Controls and Monitoring: Basic system with EPICS. The use of Hytec 9010 IOC and IP modules is recommended for most applications. Two such IOC systems already procuredfor target (sheffield) and for H2 system (at RAL) More complex systems may require VME interface

DAQWill acquire the particle-generated signals and data. global « spill trigger »+ still needs a particle-based trigger (supp. TOF0+TOF1) Based on ALICE software DATE will record at every spill the system data required for analysis(list should be established of a minimum sufficient set of such data)

Final electronics choices and DAQ modules will be proposed at RAL meeting in october

CryocoolersGM or PT???? that is the question. We will for sure have a mixed system since tracker cryo uses GM and spectrometer solenoid uses PT. Any advantage in unification? Sensitivity to magnetic field to be tested/understood for both. Beautiful field calculations by H. Whitt

AbsorbersSituation was very advanced in 2004 -- much slowed down by interruption of ICAR fundinga number of issues remain (i.e. QA of production windows, for instance) … and production of course. A problem to be solved

Physics and analysisaligment of magnetic axis of exeriment

electric field (Li): measurement of pulse amplitude vs time + phase for each cavitymaster clock?

LH2 thickness (measurement of absorber warm shape vs pressure) LH2 density from pressure and temperature measurements OK OK (<310-3) for L. H2 and most solids. Marginal or difficult for LiH and He

channel transmission measurement (Marco Apollonio)--> trigger must be based on TOF0 + TOFI (not TOFII) so that T= muons in tracker 2/ muons in tracker 1 can be measured.

PID performance (Sandström)much improvement must be turned into a user friendly package before RS flies away! tuning on data?

Measurement of longitudinal emittance (Rogers)issues with minimizing the effect of propagation of tracker precisionmeasurement of tracker resolution will be very important (step III)Very important to keep all acceptance.

PHASE II discussion

main issue: accelerator physics case for MICE PHASEII.

Q: why do we test study II cooling cell rather than the (simpler one) of Study Iia, or the ISS recommended one or the more powerful one of Muons Inc..?

A1: The MICE hardware is very mature and ready to construct and test -- in fact it is the only one in that state, other possibilities (such as study IIa,b, or ISS recommended) are not studied and designed quite yet.

A2: Equipment that MICE builds is not only useful to test Study II cooling channel, it (in particular AFC module) has flexibility for many other optics or absorber materials, and MICE is precise enough to evaluate small expected (and unexpected) differences between them.

A3: The RF modules are absolutely essential in demonstrating the fact that beam can be reaccelerated, in all cooling systems envisaged.

or: of MICE and MANXMANX LOI was submitted in may 2006 to Fermilab

MANX is a cooling system based on a helicoidal focusing channel a very challenging magnet (3-5m long SC) around L.He. absorbers. Claim of 500% cooling (vs 10% for MICE) incl. long. emittance reduction.

It is suggested that MANX can eventually be tested in the RAL muon beam, using the spectrometers and diagnostics of MICE Caveats:-- the matching of all this has not been completely demonstrated-- the gauge ‘how much beam is cooled’ may not be the same between MANX LOI and MICE-- re-acceleration of muons after such cooling requires matching to RF cavity modules such as those of MICE -- not demonstrated either -- MICE is an approved experiment (this was hard enough!) and will be completed as proposed

Given these caveats, we certainly support MANX and wish it success, as a possible follow-up on MICE. Looking forward to fruitful collaboration

A few Uncertainties (or risks) as I see them (please complete!)

1. Will target be ready and operating?

2. Will PSI solenoid resurrect?

2. Will EMCAL be ready on 15 september 2007?

3. Will TOF2 be ready end 2007?

4. Will MICE UK Phase II bid be approved?

5. Will a solution be found to finish absorber body and windows R&D and construction?

6. Will Harbin funding request come through?

etc…

How will MICE survive when Chris and Rikard have finished their thesis?

How will we man/woman the shifts?

These will be three years of intense activity: are there going to be enough of us?

CONCLUSIONS

1. This has been an extremely sucessful meeting, excellent and well prepared talks described lots of work

2. so much is happening in MICE!

3. ***460 days*** to data taking

4. We are welcoming new collaborators and having an increasing (still very cautious!) confidence in the schedule!

5. Both ‘done’ and ‘to-do’ lists are growing fast…
