From the President…. MAY MEETING Hello, Miata Enthusiasts! We had a nice turn out and a good meeting last month. I’ve decided to do Crystal’s again in May. The meeting room is very comfortable, the place is quiet on weeknights (at least it was in April), the food is surprisingly good, very friendly staff and great price. The manager doesn’t require a deposit or a big headcount and really appreciates our business so figured it was good for another round. Easy to get to, too. The big splash for May is the North Texas Mustang Club car show at the Cracker Barrel in Lewisville this coming Saturday, May 12. LSMC has been invited to participate. Our connection to the NTMC is our VP, Richard Rogers and his wife, Teri Campbell. They got us invited two years ago and we had a blast! It only costs ten bucks and is well worth the money. Janine and I have participated twice and really enjoyed ourselves. They’re a terrific bunch of folks who are genuinely pleased to have us participate, and there are lots of great cars to look at. Our club’s Miatas have done very well both times so you might want to seriously consider entering yours! We have two more big blips on the LSMC radar screen in the coming months. Our participation in the State Fair car corral and the Miata Roundup in Galveston. Richard is trying to get our date moved at the Fair because many of us want to participate in BOTH events. We always have a really good time at the Fair – they treat us well and we get a lot of interest – and it’s a great way to enjoy the Fair for FREE. The Roundup should be particularly good in Galveston. There’s so much to see and do, and the Miata crowd is, of course, always a boatload of fun to be around. The drive along to coast is a great drive and the trip across the bay to Bolivar peninsula (if you’re willing to wait) is fun, too. You can take the ferry ride across and back without the long wait (there’s parking near the ferry dock) and enjoy the scenery and dolphins. It’s also free! There have been a few good ideas for trips and I hope some people will follow through on some of them. Tom McGrath was willing to do a Memorial Day weekend drive to Austin, a trip he calls the Salt Lick Follies and has done many times. We stop off at the Salt Lick barbecue in Dripping Springs and spend an evening at Esther’s Follies on Sixth Street in downtown Austin for some jolly good, bawdy humor and political satire. Tom wanted a commitment of at least 5 cars, but didn’t get it so decided not to go. Memorial weekend is tough competition. I hope it might be on again later in the year. This year has a wealth of political fodder and I’m looking forward to some great send-ups. Please join us at the meeting this month for a few hours of grub and gab with our Miata family. And don’t forget to tell Janine you noticed her snazzy new vanity plate. Zoom – Zoom! Craig Nelson, President 2012 [email protected]

From your editor Greetings from your new newsletter editor/host. I've already made my mistake for the year so thanks for letting me get that out of the way. :) Again, if you missed it, the car show with the North Texas Mustang Club is THIS SATURDAY, May 12. NOT May 19 as originally posted in the Evite (it has been corrected there). Thank you for replying re: email addresses. I deleted the ones that returned a daemon and have the rest of you in my database. I have asked Janine about creating a club member directory available to everyone. Other clubs I belong to do this annually. I would like to get your feedback on the subject because that may be something that the club has declined to do in the past. I think it would be very helpful to have at least an email and phone list available, even if your mailing address remains unpublished. I know it would have helped me to communicate on trips in the past when I was running late and didn't know how to contact anyone. Now with smart phones, texting and even email is possible on the fly (but not while driving). Please let me know if a directory is something you would like to have. I will only publish information of those members who consent. I have included all the upcoming events I know about, which largely means I have left information in from the last newsletter that Craig did. If you have anything you would like to see in the newsletter please let me know. I have asked our webmaster Anthony to update the forwarding on the [email protected] address so it will reach me. Alternatively, please feel free to contact me directly at [email protected]. I look forward to being your newsletter editor. Julia

Meeting adjourned at 8:00 pm * Secretary’s note: Word wants to put an apostrophe when Miata is plural, but it’s not a possessive, it’s plural…. So went to Miata.net forum to see what, if anything, they had on the subject. Found some interesting commentary on the name, itself, as well as a good way to handle the subject. As a note, “Miatae” is fun, but looked on by some as “snobby”, others, as “fun and humorous”…

From Miata.net regarding the name of Miata and also it’s pluralization: Nope, the "old high German" word was discovered before the car was introduced by Rod Bymaster, Mazda's head of product planning and marketing. that's how the car got its name. Bymaster wrote in the five year retrospective on the car published by the Miata Club of America:

Quote:

In retrospect, I guess my biggest contribution to the project was to have found the word 'Miata' in Webster's Dictionary, which is defined as 'reward' in Old High German. The first time I saw the word Miata, I had a feeling that this was the name that we had been looking for. Bob Hall, the acknowledged "Father of the Miata" also confirms this explanation. Another post: Also noteworthy, Rod is the only member of the original design team that was immortalized by having his name stamped on every Miata produced! December 2010 post from El Fez, Miata.net Moderator: Haven't seen this topic in several years but it used to come up all the time. The correct collective noun is a "zoom" of miatas. because I say it is. __________________

FOR SALE! From: Mysti Oropeza [email protected] Sent: 4/11/2012 Hi…I was wondering how I might find new/soon to be Miata enthusiast/racers. My 1997 White Miata runs great and is track-ready! Hard dog roll bar, sway bars, dual exhaust, comes with 11 rims, 2 fairly new track tires and 2 track tires that are good for at least one more race. Etc. I figure I'll get the best price if I can find the guy or gal that wants a car that is race ready. Thanks! Mysti Phone No.: 972-979-8460

DON’T FORGET TO SEE OUR VICE PRESIDENT, RICHARD ROGERS, AND GET YOUR DOOR MAGNETS AND LOGO PINS!

Both items are excellent quality and only require a very reasonable donation. I think you’ll find them well worth the money.

Richard orders the magnets in batches. If you don’t want to wait for the next batch, be sure to purchase them when he has them on hand.

Galveston is plethora of activities. The webpage is up, registration is open! Come and comment at the Forum on activities your interested in. http://www.miataroundup.houstonmiataclub.com/

Attachments may be in .pdf, .txt, Word or WordPerfect format. Pictures may be in any of the usual formats such as .gif, .jpg, png, etc. If I have any problems with document or picture format, I will contact you. Don’t worry about spelling, grammar, artwork, layout, etc. I’m just pleased to receive input and will take care of the editing and cosmetics! Also, if you find something interesting online, please send me the link. Input is welcome anytime, but must be received prior to the publishing deadline (usually the first of the month) to be in the next issue. NOTE: If you want the newsletter sent to more than one email address, your secondary driver, or anyone else, please send your name (so I know you’re a member) and the email address(es) to [email protected]. ANOTHER NOTE: Member in Good Standing (you’ve paid your dues) may submit ad copy or info on their business. Does not have to be a Miata- or car-related business, but it must be your business. Others may advertise, too, for a fee. Contact the [email protected] for details.

Two-Way Radios For more fun on drives, if you don’t have a two-way radio, get one. Without one, you miss out on a lot of chat and decision making as to stops, etc. Most importantly, should you get separated from the group or have car trouble; it makes it much easier for us to find you and assist you! LSMC uses GMRS/FRS radios for better range and reception. An operating license is not required when used in the FRS range.

Stuff for Sale and Announcements LSMC permits all members in good standing to place a free ad or event announcement in the LSMC Newsletter. The item should relate to the Miata or Club activities. This includes activities hosted by other clubs, Car-related events of general interest are also welcome. Contact the editor at [email protected] to place an ad or announcement.
