As the faculty advisor of Epsilon Lambda, I seemany things the chapter does that bring me pride. You can read about many of thoseaccomplishments in other parts of this newsletter.

But what brings me the most pride is the waysthe men in the chapter are serving others. Menin the chapter have been an important nucleus ofa new group on campus that is educating menabout sexual responsibility and rape prevention.Community service has become an importantpart of the chapter. Both the new members andthe actives enthusiastically serve in communityagencies. The assistant director of Miami’sservice learning center recently wrote AaronMorgenstein `06 (Number 2) to thank him for thenumber of times men in the chapter haveresponded to requests to do community service inHamilton. She wrote:

"Each and every time that I have workedwith you to set up a project in the community, the community liaison has contacted meshortly after the event to let me know howimpressed he or she was by the group of

WORDS FROM YOUR FACULTY ADVISORmen from Kappa Alpha Order. This isnothing short of impressive and speaks tothe caliber of man you are recruiting to joinyour organization. …I would like to thankyour entire chapter for living out its valuesand showing the community what it trulymeans to serve."

Under the leadership of David Curry and ChrisMack, the chapter has also entered into apartnership with Kappa Alpha Theta to providetutoring to new members in both chapters—aninnovation I hope is copied across all chapterson campus.

KA alumni set the values that the men oncampus enact today. It is that legacy that Ilook forward to celebrating during your 25-yearanniversary celebration.

Brothers, I am looking quite forward to attendingEpsilon Lambda’s anniversary celebration thisspring. It was my privilege to have served as aProvince Commander for 14 of your chapter’s25 years of existence (1991-2005).During that time, I enjoyed watching EpsilonLambda continue on its upward path in keepingwith our motto, ‘Excelsior.’

I remember the years that the chapter washoused down at 301 E. Sycamore St.

I remember the move into the chapter house onChurch St. It was then that I first becameacquainted with Dr. Nault. I remember hisdedication to KA (although he’s an alumnus ofAlpha Sigma Phi) which was obvious one daywhen I found him working on the plumbing insidethe chapter house. I also recall the 2001

FAREWELL FROM YOUR PROVINCE COMMANDERConvention when Dr. Nault received KA’snational Faculty Advisor of the Year award.

And I'll never forget Epsilon Lambda’s lastMarshall win at NLI in Austin, Texas, in 2004.We all shared a laugh as members of Bobby’sexecutive committee disassembled the trophycup that comprises the Marshall Award. Funnyhow one ornamental screw at the top of thetrophy holds the ENTIRE thing together!

These and many other memories of my timespent on Miami’s beautiful campus and HighStreet in Oxford with my brothers at EpsilonLambda, I will always recall fondly and with achuckle. I can’t wait to catch up with many ofyou again!

ANNUAL QUEEN CITY GOLF SCRAMBLEThe 4th annual Queen CityAlumni Chapter Golf Scramblewas held at Devou Golf Coursein Covington, Kentucky, on July30, 2005. There were 24brothers in attendance (somefrom out-of-town) which againmade this event a success and anew tradition for Alumni toattend on an annual basis. Thewinning foursome was made upof Stu Bauman `85, Steve Baxla`86, Jim Kerr ̀ 87 and Phil Martin88, which put a stop to a team ofactive brothers winning for thesecond consecutive year.

In addition to great weather andgood (and not-so-good) golfing, the event was highlighted by giving awaydoor prizes such as two Bengals/Steelerstickets, four Reds tickets, and a Bose WaveRadio. Like any good golf event with theguys, the day’s festivities were capped offwith dinner and drinks at Hofbrauhaus on theKentucky side of the river.

This tradition continues…so plan now oncoming to the 5th Annual Queen City AlumniChapter Golf Scramble, which will be held onJuly 29, 2006. More details to come soon!

Last April, KA brothers from across thenation came together for a tradition that hasbeen sorely missed by the Epsilon Lambdachapter for several years. It was therenewal of the Lobster & Lowenbrau party. The weekend began Friday night with thearrival of over 55 alumni brothers, followedby a reunion at Top Deck. On Saturday, theactive brothers hosted a barbecue at thenewly painted house. Even though theweather didn’t cooperate, the festivitiescontinued. Saturday night continued with the

crawfish cookout followed by Lobster& Lowenbrau. Alumni brothers inattendance were kind enough to showus the “proper” decorations needed totransform the chapter house. Thisincluded the creation of the enormouscrimson Lobster Claws placed on theexterior of our house. The weekendconcluded with a Sunday brunch at thehouse featuring the famous muffins byour house cook Rita Jefferson.

Alumni Brothers, as we approach the 25th Anniversary ofour chartering we are called to reflect on our experiencesas KA’s, what made us become fraternity men, and whatwe have learned or may still be learning from ourbrothers. While I am still an active, I have already gaineda sincere respect for the relationships that KA hasallowed me to build. I have witnessed how these bondsremain strong even after graduation; notably through myown brother Tom, who graduated last year. Despite thelong distances between his friends, he has been able toremain close to the chapter and his fellow alumni brotherswho have moved all across the country.

Despite being a legacy of an active of Epsilon Lambda,I was surely never guaranteed membership into KA.

I think back to my freshman year and I wonder how Iever received a bid, let alone made it through pledging.Perhaps it was a sense of entitlement or a lack of maturitythat made my first years in KA a challenge. What I knowfor sure though, is that Tom’s example and the exampleset forth by other brothers encouraged me to develop andmature greatly. I once said I would never want to be thePresident of KA, but with the support and encouragementof 100 of my fellow brothers I have been allowed to takeon this great endeavor.
