By R.A. RomeroThe Miami Laker staffOn Saturday, May 9,

From 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. at theDon Shula’s Hotel lobby, 6842Main Street, current and formerstudents, family and friends willbe playing the piano to raise fundsto donate to the Alzheimer’sAssociation in Merino’s name.

Jessica Comellas was taught toplay piano on the lap of her grand-mother, Ileana “Nana” Merino, aclassically trained pianist hailingfrom Cuba. Merino also taught herdaughter, Comellas’s mother,Maria Merino Comellas, alongwith countless other students aspart of a storied 50 year teachingcareer. In 2012 Merino was diag-nosed with Alzheimer’s, whichforced her into retirement from theteaching studio she started many

years ago now headed by JessicaComellas.

Under the instruction ofJessica, the studio became knownas Generations Piano Studio, anhomage to the musical matriarchalgenerations that led to its incep-tion and continued teaching and“to honor the one who started itall,” said Jessica.

Merino’s diagnosis inspiredJessica to raise funds and aware-ness for the Alzheimer’sAssociation’s event called TheLongest Day. Held annually on theSummer Solstice, the duration ofthe sunrise-to-sunset event sym-bolizes the challenging journey ofthose living with the disease andtheir caregivers. As part of theMerino-Comellas Longest Dayevent, they will be doing whatthey do best – playing piano. Ben & Jerry’s franchise opens in Royal Oaks Center

IVAN and MARCELA KOZUPYTSYA

By R.A. RomeroThe Miami Laker staffSweet tooth customers that

enter the new Ben & Jerry’s loca-tion at 15484 N.W. 77 Court in theRoyal Oaks Shopping Center areimmediately greeted by a massivemural depicting two guayabera-clad cows sipping on their cafecitoand enjoying some ice cream nearthe Miami Beach skyline.

The mural speaks volumesabout the easy assimilation intothe community that ownersMarcela and Ivan Kozupytsyahave made following their grandopening of Miami Lakes’ newestice cream shop.

The Kozupytsyas stumbledonto Miami Lakes while research-ing locations for their first fran-chise. Ivan had seen the RoyalOaks Shopping Center online andwhile it didn’t appear much differ-ent from other areas they hadscouted he was mysteriouslydrawn to it. He abruptly ended hisonline research and hit the road atmidnight to see the shopping cen-ter in person.

“Even at that time there werefamilies out, walking and hangingout. Miami Lakes is a very family-oriented community which isexactly what we wanted. It wasperfect,” said Ivan.

More than searching for a fam-ily-oriented community, theKozupytsyas were looking for aplace to be involved. In the sever-al months since Ben & Jerry’sopened its doors, the shop has par-ticipated in funding campaigns forlocal schools, Marcela has joinedthe Miami Lakes Youth Activities

Task Force, and most recently theshop was awarded an AppreciationAward by Senator Bob Graham forcontributions and fundraising forBob Graham Education Center.

“It’s really not like work, thisdoesn’t feel like we are working, this is just our life,” said Marcela.

Both Marcela and Ivan under-stand what it’s like to go to aworkplace that feels like work. They have roots in suit-and-tiebusiness environments, Marcelapreviously working as a financialadvisor for eight years and Ivan asan attorney. Neither were able tofind the creative fulfillment theycraved within the confines of theirprevious professions so theysought out entrepreneurship in thesweetest business they could find.

“I loved my job. I learned a lotbut it wasn’t me,” said Marcela.“Ivan’s father and my father wereboth entrepreneurs, so we alwaysknew we would want to do thesame and open our own business,we just didn’t know it would beice cream,” said Marcela.

Ivan returned to school afterworking as an attorney and earnedhis Master’s in marketing. It wasthere that he completed a thesis onBen & Jerry’s branding and soonthereafter found himself steeped inice cream.

“I come from a history of eatinga lot of ice cream. A lot,” saidIvan. “And when you eat a lot ofice cream, you have to find thehealthiest one. So after youresearch it, you find that Ben &Jerry’s really is the best.”

Among the exhaustive list offlavors created by “flavor gurus”

at Ben & Jerry’s headquarters inVermont, Marcela’s favorite isGilly’s Catastrophic Crunch.Ivan’s favorite flavor is TonightDough by Jimmy Fallon, a lovethat extends into decoration ascustomers will find JimmyFallon’s smiling unbodied headfloating among clouds in theshop’s colorful restroom. Duringthe March 6 ribbon cutting event,Mayor Wayne Slaton tried theWayne’s Swirl flavor, a play onwords for the famous 90’s filmWayne’s World.

The ice cream shop has provento be irresistible even to thoseleaving the nearby gym who slipinto the shop and whisper to theBen and Jerry’s staff “You neversaw me here.”

The shop recently held a freescoop event on April 14 whichboasted a line wrapping around theshopping center from the shop toWinn Dixie. A total of 4,293scoops were scooped that dayfrom 1 to 8 p.m. while the shop’smascot, Woody the Cow, dancedon the countertops. Another 250free cones will be given onMother’s Day, May 9, at thetown’s “Paint A Picture For Mom”event at Miami Lakes Picnic ParkWest.

Flavors are offered in cones, pints, ice cream cakes and mostrecently in the form of a burrito(“brrr-ito”), a crepe stuffed withtwo flavors and toppings.

The Par 3 Committee’s finalrecommendation was that thecouncil shouldn’t vote on thedesign of the passive park untildiscussing blueprints with resi-dents during a workshop, includ-ing members of the committee.

“I want to thank the Par 3Committee for all their efforts, positive input and hard work dur-ing the committee meetings,”Mingo said. “I agree with the con-sensus reached by them that theacquisition of this golf courseshould only be used for a passivepark.”

MLEC student puts Health Training in ActionBy Stephanie BritoSpecial to The Miami LakerWhen a flight attendant on

Flight #1514 from Washington,D.C. to Chicago went on the P.A.and asked, “Are there any medicalpersonnel on board?” It was not awell-seasoned doctor in his late50’s that got up. Instead, NicoleRosello, 17, rushed out of her seatto help.

Rosello, a senior in the HealthAcademy at Miami LakesEducational Center, is a CertifiedNursing Assistant and a StudentPractical Nurse. She was on herway home from a five day JuniorState of America (JSA) conventionin Washington, D.C. when she gotthe opportunity to apply the nurs-ing skills that she learned in highschool in a real life scenario.

When Rosello arrived to theback of the plane, a woman in herearly 60’s was laying on the floor, passed out on one of the flightattendant’s laps. Rosello recordedthe woman’s vitals.

“I jumped into nurse mode andbegan to assess her, beginningwith her pulse, the temperature ofher skin, and checked her pupils. Inoticed everything seemed to be inorder,” said Rosello.

Her breathing was slow, butsteady. Rosello sat with thewoman, observing her vitals, untilthe woman awoke. After thewoman, who said she was takingstrong medications, was strongenough to stand up, Roselloescorted her to her seat and record-ed her blood pressure and pulseagain. Everything still seemed tobe in order.

“She later reported that she wasexperiencing diarrhea and Ithought to myself dehydration, with strong medication, may lead

to fatigue and syncope,” saidRosello. Half an hour later,Rosello gave the woman some-thing to drink and recorded hervitals again. The woman was sta-ble until landing, where she wasescorted to a local hospital byparamedics.

Coincidentally, on the sametrip, at Chicago Midway Inter-national Airport, Rosello cameacross another person who neededmedical attention. This time, it wasa woman who fell, hit her head andstarted bleeding. Rosello stoppedthe bleeding and ran to the gate forher next flight to Miami.

It’s not the first time thatRosello has had to jump intoaction to care for a patient. “I havea desire to help others,” she said.“I almost missed my flight home, but I couldn’t leave knowing thatthere was someone who neededmy help.”

Rosello is graduating fromMiami Lakes Educational Centerthis June and plans to major inPsychology and Neurobiology.

Theatre Review:God of Carnage at Main St. Playhouse

By R.A. RomeroThe Miami Laker staffGod of Carnage, written by

Yasmina Reza and directed byMain Street Players ArtisticDirector, Robert Coppel, provesthat carnage does not solely referto physical brutality and weapon-ry. Words are just as mighty.

When two couples, Alan andAnnette Raleigh and Veronica andMichael Novak, meet to discussthe tussle between their sonsBenjamin Raleigh and HenryNovak in the schoolyard, the resultis nothing short of verbal carnage.

What begins as a polite placa-tion in the face of awkward andtense circumstances quicklyunravels to name calling, blame, and behavior that overwhelms thevery schoolyard fight that broughtthe parents there.

The setting, the Novak homedecorated with African elements, and the loud drumming introduc-tion that plays overhead gives theaudience clues that this confronta-tion is more than just a discussion– it’s war. Against who? It’s any-one’s guess. Blows and punchesare thrown every which way and abattle of unified parents turns intoa battle of the sexes revealing thefractures in each marriage.

Alan, played by MannyCatalino, cuts conversation withhis work cell phone glued to hisear, and his wife Annette, playedby Christine LaRochelle, though

seemingly eager to work out theissue, soon finds her bearings andunleashes her raw form. Veronica, played by Rachel Stone, and herhusband Michael, played byRobert Anderson, show thatunderneath every thinly veiledfacade is a volcano waiting for theright moment to erupt.

The night progresses intounhappy debauchery and amid thechaos, the Novaks and theAndersons find that Benjamin andHenry’s fight might have been themost simple problem. Michaelsays in the first act, “People arelumps, always being molded, evento the very end.” In this light, a

childhood fight is not much differ-ent from those in adulthood, except that broken teeth can bemended, unlike broken spirits.

God of Carnage is on stage atthe Main Street Playhouse, 6766Main Street, through May 17.Performances are at 8 p.m. onFridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m.on Sundays. Tickets are $25 foradults, $20 for seniors and $18 forstudents with valid ID. For moreinformation and to purchase tick-ets visit www.mainstreetplayers.com.

Softball ace Alexis Castroman signs with St. Thomas

ALEXIS CASTROMAN signs commitment to St. Thomas U.

By David L. SnellingThe Miami Laker staffUnlike most student-athletes

who signed their letter of intent atschool, American High’s starpitcher Alexis Castroman chose tocommit to a Florida universitywhere she launched her softballcareer at the tender age of 7.

Flanked her parents, coachesand friends at field No. 3 at MiamiLakes Optimist Park, Alexis choseto attend St. Thomas University, taking her pitching talent to a teamthat has won the highly competi-tive Sun Belt Conference champi-onship, and is ranked in the NAIAtop 20.

She plans to study sports man-agement when she enrolls at theuniversity this fall.

Alexis, who was recruited by ahost of colleges and universities, chose to be a Bobcat to be closerto home, and the school matchedher academic needs.

Alexis’ signing was bitter sweetbecause it took place at the parkwhere she played for the past 12years, and became a star pitcher

for the Miami Lakes OptimistClub.

She initially played recreationalsoftball at Miami Lakes OptimistPark when she was seven-years-old, and she began playing travelball with the Miami Lakes HeatAll-Star Team at the age of 8.

Her father, Alex Castroman, isthe head coach of the Heat team.

“We couldn’t be prouder,” saidCastroman, along with Alexis’mother Ivette and her sister Erika.“Can you imagine? Weekend afterweekend, from the age of 8, some-times waking up at 5:30 a.m. totravel to different tournaments, allover the state of Florida. All thesacrifices, back-to-back games, scratches and bruises, all worthwhile, which shows how hardwork and dedication does pay off.We look forward to seeing Alexisplay at St. Thomas University.”

Alexis, a Miami-Herald SecondTeam member her freshmen andjunior year, will graduate fromhigh school in June at the top ofher class, where she has beencoached by Sergio Fernandez and

his two sons, David and Daniel, and Kayel Guillen.

Fernandez, American’s coachfor five years and winner of thedistrict championship on severaloccasions, coached his sons whoplayed in the T-Ball through thePony leagues at the Optimist Club.

“This proves time after time, that our program has been a goodprogram,” said Castroman, who’salso the Optimist Club’s softballcommissioner. “We have had over20 girls move on to play softballall over the state, many of themreceiving scholarships to attendexcellent universities.”

Alexis has an impressive high-school career.

She recorded a 53-23 record,2.70 ERA and 248 strikeouts witha .485 batting average.

Castroman said the OptimistClub helped prepare his daughterto play on a bigger stage in highschool.

“We have seen plenty of coach-es stick it out until the end to makea difference at Miami LakesOptimist,” he said. “Our programemphasizes teaching, sportsman-ship and playing the game. It’snever only been about winningtrophies, even though over theyears, Alexis’ travel team did winsix first place and three secondplace championships. However, for Alexis, it’s been more aboutthe friendships and memoriesmade along the way.”

Said Alexis: “I had a great soft-ball career and had the honor ofmeeting and playing with so manytremendous teammates. I amthankful for my teammates andcoaches.”

Pace High’s drama students end year with HairsprayBy Rene D. BasultoSpecial to The Miami LakerWith a rousing production of

the classic musical Oklahoma!back in January, students inMonsignor Edward Pace HighSchool’s drama program werelooking forward to putting on amodern musical classic:Hairspray.

“It was their dream show for alot of them,” said Christina Pla-Guzman, Lead Teacher of Pace’sAcademy for Visual andPerforming Arts Theatre Program.“Them wanting to do it so muchmade me want to do it even more.”

While preparing to compete atthe 2015 Florida State ThespianFestival, where they won multiple

awards, accolades, and scholar-ships, nearly 100 Pace Drama stu-dents worked four months onrehearsals and over 100 hoursbuilding sets. On April 21,Hairspray finally opened for athree-night run with a packed andraucous crowd inside Pace’sSpartan Center.

“Director Pla-Guzman does agreat job with the kids,” said PatKunkel, who attended the openingnight performance. “As someonewho has seen many of her produc-tions, I’m amazed at how the kids

always give 150 percent.”As part of Pace Drama’s com-

munity outreach, Pla-Guzmanarranged a special performance onthe morning of April 23 for a veryenthusiastic crowd of over 300middle school students from OurLady of the Lakes, St. John theApostle, and AnnunciationCatholic Schools. The audiencewas even more excited to see sev-eral cast members who had gradu-ated from their middle schools.

Hairspray has also been bitter-sweet for Pla-Guzman and the

Pace Drama program, as it is thefinal production for 30 seniors onboth the cast and crew, the biggestgraduating class in the program’shistory. “It’s a chapter that’s end-ing. It’s scary and sad and I’mgoing to miss them a lot,” said Pla-Guzman.
