Lake Sarah Drainage projectonly one approved for M. Lakesprivate property, and the WestLakes drainage improvementsproject was aimed at overhaulingand retrofitting the drainage sys-tem to reduce flooding and prop-erty damage to nearly 3,000 resi-dents in the southwestern portionof the town.

With Scott allowing the fund-ing for the Lake Sarah Drainageimprovements, the town will usethe $300,000 to prevent structuraldamage to private property byincreasing storm water manage-ment capacity and eliminateflooding in the southeastern por-tion of the town.

The funding for all three proj-ects had been considered a seriouspriority by Miami Lakes residentsand Town Council members FrankMingo, Tony Lama, NelsonRodriguez, Tim Daubert, CeasarMestre and Vice Mayor MannyCid.

During the regular LegislativeSession, council members trav-

eled to Tallahassee for Miami-Dade Days and lobbied the statelawmakers for the funding for thecapital improvement projects.

Diaz said he was disappointedthe governor vetoed the projectsfor Miami Lakes.

“It is unfortunate that theMiami Lakes drainage and canalprojects were included in the gov-ernor’s vetoes,” he said. " I lookforward to continuing to fight fordollars for infrastructure thatimproves the quality of life for ourcommunity as we have done forthe last there years. We will backon it in September.”

Cid said though he respects thegovernor’s line item veto authori-ty, he wholeheartedly disagreeswith his decision to veto the twoMiami Lakes projects.

“The two projects vetoed areNOT budget turkeys, they are vitalinfrastructure improvementschampioned by our Miami Lakeslegislative delegation,” Cid said.

Amy Diaz opens FH Fashion Housein Cypress Village Shopping Center

By R.A. RomeroThe Miami Laker staffLongtime local resident and

former Pace student, Amy Diazhas always had a love for fashion. It was only a matter of time thatshe would open her own store, FHFashion House, now located at7307 Miami Lakes Dr in theCypress Village Shopping Center.

As a teenager Diaz began work-

ing at a local retail store and overthe course of eight years, workedher way up from sales associate tomanaging and buying for the store. She later became a buyer for anexclusive travel retailer group andoversaw luxury departments suchas Ray Ban, Michael Kors, Prada, and Coach among others.

After spending time managingfor others and earning her degreein marketing, Diaz decided to pur-sue a lifelong dream – to open herown boutique. When it came timeto decide on a location, Diazquickly thought of home.

“I’m familiar with the area, with the people and I love thecommunity,” said Diaz. “Theopportunity came up for this loca-tion and we thought it was per-fect.”

With a location scouted and along awaited eagerness, FHFashion House was born andopened in May. Diaz quickly wentto work cultivating unique and far-reaching style options for anyonewho may step foot inside her store.

“I have learned while in thisbusiness that you can’t alwaysshop for yourself,” said Diaz. “Ofcourse, my style comes through inthe selection offered, but I try toprovide options, things that a vari-ety of people want. I often seemothers and daughters both leavewith something they want.”

Diaz integrates customer feed-back into her selections, and willsoon be offering a swimsuit line atthe suggestion of a client who wassearching for a specific piece.

She considers the overall styleof the store as a rustic, bohemianfeel and “something trendy for theall-around woman.” Her selectionsare from Los Angeles and NewYork and also include items thatare hard to find. Diaz has a selec-tion of the coveted baby blingbowls and Little Shop & Co.mommy and me selections thatcan only be found at Nordstromand now, within the town ofMiami Lakes.

In addition to style options,Diaz highly regards the interper-sonal satisfaction of her cus-tomers, noting that “styles changebut the relationship built with acustomer is most important,” said Diaz.

Upon entry, the boutique alsoreflects the look now synonymouswith the current sleek and modernstyle of minimalism combinedwith a rustic charm, decor specifi-cally selected to stand out from thecramped and close quarters oftenfound in clothing stores. Both inhand-selected clothing styles andinterior design, Diaz has set out tobe set apart from other boutiques.

FH Fashion House is openMondays from 1 to 8 p.m.,Tuesdays through Saturdays fromnoon to 8 p.m. Sunday hours are tobe announced. For more informa-tion on FH Fashion House visit thestore or follow on Instagram at@fhfashionhouse.

Dick Poczciwinski, 82, a basketballstar in play at Shula’s Athletic Club

82-YEAR-OLD BASKETBALL STAR DICK POCZCIWINSKI

By David L. SnellingThe Miami Laker staffDick Poczciwinski is a nimble

basketball player with a trademarkjump shot that’s lethal.

At Shula’s Athletic Club inMiami Lakes, he pushes the balldown the court with cartoon-likespeed, and either passes the ball toone of his teammates or scoreswith the jump shot or a lay-up.

Sometimes, he’s the leadingscorer on his pick-up team, aver-aging in double figures, and playsgood defense.

In one game, he held an oppos-ing player to one of the worstshooting performances of hiscareer. “I was holding the bestshooter and he had a bad night. Hewanted to take a swing at me,”Poczciwinski quipped.

Every Saturday morning,Poczciwinski plays basketball at a

high and intense level at theAthletic Club, and he is 82-years-old.

Despite his age, Poczciwinskihas been recognized by his team-mates and opposing players as agood player, leaving them baffledover a man nearly a century yearold who can play on the same levelas younger players, while men hisage live with the day-to-day diffi-culties of moving their bodies.

“It’s simple, I am a fierce com-petitor,” the Kendall resident said.“I have been playing basketballsince I was a kid and neverstopped playing at a high level. My motto is once you start some-thing, you can never go back. Inother words, never give up.”

Poczciwinski, a retired rentalcar consultant, is in good shapeand he still has the competitivedrive that earned him the distinc-

tion as an all-around athlete.Since competing, he has won

40 medals, gold and silver, in bas-ketball, tennis, racquet ball, soft-ball, golf and swimming. And hecontinues to play all six sports at 82.

Jim Hamilton, who plays bas-ketball with Poczciwinski onSaturdays at the Athletic Club, said his jump shots are “lethal.”

Hamilton said he shot five-for-five from the field in one gamewhile playing with guys in their20s and 30s. “It was lights out,” hesaid.

Hamilton calls him the dean ofbasketball. “He is a very competi-tive person and you can see it inhis eyes. He really enjoys travel-ing from Kendall and enjoyingplaying with younger guys. He’splaying a game he loves,”Hamilton said.

Hamilton, 70, said he first metPoczciwinski at Shula’s Athleticadult basketball league, which wasfounded by himself and MiamiLakes resident Dave Oliver.

“Most pro athletes, when theyget older, can run and up down thecourt but not at their youngerpace,” Hamilton said. “Dick canrun up and down the court andkeep up with guys in their 20s and30s. It’s remarkable and he’s aninspiration to all of us that we canplay basketball that long.”

Heat All-Stars team competesin SWAMP Classic tourney

The Miami Lakes Heat AllStars team competed in the 19thannual USSSA SWAMP Classictwo-day tournament in West PalmBeach.

The team’s coaches and theplayers’ parents said it was a braveperformance by the girls who are14 and 15 years old who defeatedthe two 18 and under teams,Plantation Pressure and MiamiStingrays, to make it to the cham-pionship game.

“The girls played valiantly,”said head coach Alex Castroman.

Castroman said offensively, theteam recorded 28 hits in fivegames, and defensively commit-ted only three errors with five

double plays and a couple ofamazing defensive plays as well.“Our pitching was great thatweekend, which was led byAshley Alfonso and CassidyZeigler,” Castroman said. “Theypitched great and they hung inthere even playing three games inrow.”

Castroman added: “The coach-es and parents couldn’t be prouderof all our girls. Some of these girlshave been playing together for thepast four to five years and many ofthem have played at Miami LakesOptimist Park since first grade. This shows that hard work anddedication can finally pay off.”

Sen. Marco Rubio joins in town’sefforts for independent Zip Code

By David L. SnellingThe Miami Laker staffMiami Lakes’ efforts to have its

own independent zip code piquedthe interest of U.S. Senator andRepublican presidential candidateMarco Rubio.

According to a missive datedJune 17, 2015 that Rubio wrote toU.S. Postmaster General MeganBrennan, the senator is pressingthe Washington D.C.-based officeto come to a decision on MiamiLakes’ appeal for a zip code afterthe town’s request was denied ear-lier this year.

In March, the USPS informedMiami Lakes that the town’s FOIArequest had been denied because“such records” would fall underthe FOIA exemption, a federal law

which applies to information thatis exempt from disclosure underanother federal statue. Informationof a commercial nature, includingtrade secrets, whether or notobtained from a person outside thepostal service, which under goodbusiness practice would not bepublicly disclosed.

Rubio’s letter said, in part, “Iam writing to follow-up on aFreedom of Information Actrequest that was made by the cityof Miami Lakes on December 19,2014 seeking information on theirprior request for a zip code bound-ary change and subsequentdenial,” Rubio wrote in the letter.“In response to their FOIA denial,Miami Lakes sent an appealrequest on April 10 to the Chief

Counsel of Customer Programs atthe USPS and is awaiting aresponse. I respectfully request, within all applicable rules and reg-ulations, for the full and fair con-sideration of Miami Lakes’ FOIArequest and would appreciate aresponse on this matter. Thank youin advance and I look forward toyour response.”

Rubio’s request on behalf ofMiami Lakes is a glimmer ofhope, as the town has been fight-ing for years to gain its own inde-pendent zip code to help lower carinsurance and homeowners insur-ance premiums, among otherissues.

The three zip codes MiamiLakes uses are registered with thecity of Hialeah Postmaster.

Since he was elected to politicaloffice in 2014, Miami Lakes ViceMayor Manny Cid has been lead-ing the charge for an independentzip code, which is also on theagenda of U.S. CongressmanMario Diaz-Balart.

Cid called for a straw vote in2014 to determine if residentswant the town to resume pursuingits own zip code. Residents over-whelmingly approved the initia-tive.

“Our Town is very fortunate tohave two great public servants rep-resenting us in the nationsCapitol,” Cid said. “Senator Rubioand Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart are diligently working toensure that our residents voices areheard and respected. SenatorRubio took time out of his busyschedule to voice his support ofour zip code initiative. We stillhave a lot of work ahead of us butwe are closer to our goal of anindependent zip code.”

Residents are encouraged tohelp reduce costly sewer clogs

The Miami-Dade Water andSewer Department (WASD) isasking Miami-Dade residents tohelp reduce and eliminate costlyclogs within the county’s nearly6,800 miles of sewer lines due to“flushable” wipes.

Out of sight doesn’t mean outof mind. There is a growingnational problem of wipes in pipesthat result in increased sewerclogs, broken pumps, and otherlarge pieces of sewer machinesand equipment. The culprit is pre-moistened towelettes in the form

of baby wipes, cleaning wipes, paper towels and feminine prod-ucts.

These products do not break-down within the sewer system andcan result in costly clogs as well assewer backups within homes.

It is recommended that onlytoilet paper be flushed down thetoilet and all other products to bedisposed of in the trash.

Health Hints:Identifying aspects for a healthy life

By Ricky AliSpecial to The Miami LakerAfter establishing a purpose in

life, and having a firm belief thatyou can successfully accomplishyour life and fitness goals, the nextstep is to develop a plan thatincludes a series of organizedstrategies that can help youachieve your goals.

First, identify all the aspects ofa healthy life. The four major com-ponents of health and fitness are:Wellness, Lifestyle, Nutrition andFitness. Each component also hasmany sub-components, for exam-ple Wellness can include stressmanagement and disease preven-tion. The same is true for all areas.Notice how these componentsintersect. A poor lifestyle habit ofexcessive alcohol consumptioncan bring about a wellness issue ofliver malfunction and both canaffect the ability to improve healthand fitness.

Other aspects of a healthy lifeare developing and nurturing goodsupport systems, maintaininghealthy and meaningful relation-ships with others, showing empa-thy, and spiritual focus such aspracticing whatever safe religiousbeliefs one might desire.Ultimately, not compromisingmoral, values, ethics and connect-ing with others are interconnectedwith a healthy life.

The challenge is balancing allthese aspects. It may seem over-whelming, but we have all accom-plished some balance. The key isunderstanding that we are going to

live for seventy-plus years, and itwill take this life’s journey togrow, develop, experience, incor-porate and slowly balance as manyaspects as possible for our life-time. One may never achieve com-plete balance, however the goal isto consistently strive to become abetter, healthier person. That is theenriching fulfillment that will con-tinually drive us to live a healthyhappy life with ourselves andthose around us.

Dr. Maxwell Maltz estimatedthat it takes a minimum of 21 daysto formulate a habit. Howeverresearchers at University CollegeLondon conducted studies whichindicated that it took participantsan average of 66 days to formulatea new habit, with the least amountof days being 18 and the maxi-mum being 254.

There is really no magic num-ber. However, I have found that ittook me and the majority of myclients approximately 90 days, give or take a week or two, to deci-sively accept change, formulatenew behavior, implement this newbehavior and make a permanentbehavioral change. Hence my 90day rule, which seems to coincidewith the fact that physiologically ittakes about 90 days for the humanbody to undergo significant cellu-lar and metabolic changes inresponse to progressive exercisestimulus.

My suggested strategy is as fol-lows. During the first monthsmaller proximal goals are set in atimely fashion that you can

accomplish. During month twofurther proximal goals are set thateventually direct you towardachieving the set goal at the end ofmonth three. The objective isbreaking down the goal into small-er time frames, like 3 months, where it is not overwhelming, yetattainable. An example would be agoal to drink 8 glasses of water. For the first month, drink 5 glass-es of water every day. The nextmonth drink 6. The third monthdrink 8 glasses of water. A habitcan be solidified at this point.

Keep in mind not everyone canmeet these time frames, this iswhere you have to be flexibleenough to understand and acceptthat you may need to continuesome goals for another month ortwo or even three. There are goalsthat may take more over-all timeand there are unforseen circum-stances that can cease progress fora while. Overall, stay flexible withtime, but always keep workingtoward your goals. They areattainable!

At Shula’s Athletic Club, I’mvery fortunate to part of a team ofyoung professional coaches thatshare the same vision as I do.Together we are dedicated andcommitted to provide everyone inour facility and community withthe highest quality service. Weunderstand the importance ofachieving goals and living a highquality, disease and injury freelife.

Hialeah Miami Lakes star linebackerJamari Lattimore joins NY Jets

By The Miami Laker staffFormer Hialeah Miami Lakes

High School standout linebackerJamari Lattimore was picked upby the New York Jets during theoff season to help the team’s rundefense that allowed 2,341 rushingyards, 3,746 passing yards and 401points last season, and missed theplayoffs for the fourth consecutiveyear.

All in all, the Jets’ defenseallowed 5,235 total yards and 25points per game to finish with thesixth best defense in the NFLbehind Seattle, Detroit, Denver,Buffalo and San Francisco.

The team, which finished theseason 4-12, needs more depth atdefense to stop the run and passingattacks from some of the bestoffensive teams on their 2015schedule, including Super Bowlchampion New England,Indianapolis Colts, Dallas

Cowboys and Miami Dolphins. Lattimore, 6-2 and 230 pounds,

who spent the past four years withthe Green Bay Packers and wasseconds away from a trip to theSuper Bowl last year, is the ideal

player to help the Jets’ defense. In Green Bay, Lattimore, who

started his career at the MiamiLakes Optimist Club, recorded 84tackles (57 solo), four sacks andtwo interceptions.

New head coach Todd Bowles, who was the Arizona Cardinals’defense coordinator last season, islooking to rebuild the team, espe-cially the defense and sought line-backers with speed and aggressivetackling.

Lattimore, 26, signed with thePackers in 2011 as an undraftedrookie from Middle TennesseeState and was converted fromdefensive end to linebacker.

The Packers’ scouts thought hewould be a good fit to the team’sdefense after witnessing hisrecord-breaking performances incollege.

Lattimore spent his first collegeyear at Dodge City CommunityCollege in Kansas, where herecorded 60 tackles, a team highnine sacks and two interceptions.

He transferred to MiddleTennessee State and registered 22tackles (5.5 for loss), 3.5 sacks andbroke up two passes during hissophomore year.

As a junior, he finished the sea-son with 47 tackles, (9.5 for loss)and 5.5 sacks, earning him secondteam All-Sun Belt honors.

As a senior, he had 11.5 sacks,a team record in a game with four,68 tackles, blocked two kicks andforced two fumbles, as he wasnamed Sun-Belt player of the year.

Pace High students give back to thecommunity with quarterly blood drives

By Rene D. BasultoSpecial to The Miami LakerIn accordance with their

Catholic beliefs and dedication tocommunity service, Pace HighSchool students have always goneabove and beyond to help those inneed. No where is this more evi-dent than its quarterly student-runblood drives held at the school.

Pace student volunteers fromthe Leadership team run eachblood drive in conjunction withthe One Blood organization whichprovides the buses and necessarymaterials for donations. The driveswere so successful that, at onepoint, three buses were takingdonations at capacity. Their contri-butions help not just those patientswho suffer traumatic injuries, butalso those who suffer from chron-ic diseases and conditions such ascancers, leukemia, and blood dis-orders.

Dr. Robert De Valle, a Pace par-ent, husband to Pace alumnaChristine Maseo, and MiamiLakes resident, volunteers tosupervise each drive. Even afteryears of helping out, Del Valle is

still blown away by the dedication, good will, and charity of the stu-dent volunteers and blood donors.

“One student related it to Jesusgiving himself up to save others,”said Del Valle. “It was her way tobe more like Christ.”

Every unit of blood helps three

patients in need, according to DelValle, and given the short shelf-life of blood products, a constantflow of donations is important. Intotal, Pace High School studentsand faculty donated 134 pints ofblood during the 2014-2015school year. In addition to all ofthe community contributions, the2014-2015 blood drives haveamassed around $15,000 in schol-arship funds for Pace students.

MDCPS beginsoperations review

At a special meeting of theMiami-Dade County SchoolBoard, Superintendent Alberto M.Carvalho presented a re-structur-ing overhaul of the District’soperations. The reorganizationfocuses on a realignment of pur-pose, functions, and positions, resulting in a savings of over $6.5million for the school district. Theplan was unanimously approvedby the School Board.

The reorganization eliminatesredundancies and duplication ofservices, promotes and augmentstransparency in function andmanagement of the school dis-trict. The plan also places greaterattention on early childhood edu-cation and helps align the arts andmusic programs along with sci-ence, moving from STEM toSTEAM (adding the arts toSTEM).

“Through efficiencies, strate-gic alignments, and reinvestmentsin the protection and expansion ofschool site programs, this reor-ganization plan will result in over$6.5 million in savings to theSchool Board,” said Carvalho.

In addition, School Boardmembers also unanimouslyapproved an item to create a taskforce that will advise the districton how to best move forwardwith plans to redevelop 10 acresof School Board-owned realestate. The land is located in theheart of Miami’s Arts andEntertainment District.

“We need to consider this notas a short-term deal that enlargesthe coffers of the district for ayear or two and then dries up,”said Carvalho. “This is an incred-ible opportunity to monetize andprovide long-term funding formany educational programs.”

The District’s guiding princi-ples and priorities for this rede-velopment plan include maintain-ing a comprehensive educationalpresence in the area and a Districtadministrative presence in down-town Miami inclusive of WLRNor considering other no cost alter-natives. Additionally, maximizingthe financial benefit to the Board, both short and long-term andcomplementing current commu-nity infrastructure, such as publictransportation.
