Daniel Y. Cooper, Albert Hernandez III,

Philip Hernandez, Channise Aryan Lewis and Simi Serfati are the second group of honorees for the 2012-13

academic and sportsmanship program, conducted by the The Miami Herald and

two-time NBA champion Miami Heat in conjunction with Gatorade.

These standout student athletes were

honored on the AmericanAirlines Arena court before the Heat/Cleveland

Cavaliers game. Each received two game tickets, a Heat goody bag and a certificate. They were congratulated by Miami Heat players Birdman Chris Andersen, Shane Battier, Udonis Haslem and Mike Miller.

The honorees competed in youth basketball for their school and/or league and/or travel team.

• Daniel Y. Cooper

From 2010-12, Daniel played basketball for West Orange Hight School in Orlando. He made the move to Homestead, and as a junior, he competed for the South Dade High

School boys’ varsity team.

A standout on the court, he was also a member of the Orlando Roadrunners, Each One Teach One and Central Elite travel basketball teams.

Off the court, Daniel made the Honor Roll all four quarters and maintains a 3.4+ grade point average. The 16-year-old is also an active member of teen ministry at the South

Florida Church of Christ, where he was Outstanding Teen Camper of the Week twice.

• Albert Hernandez III

After completing the cross-country season for Southwood Middle School, Albert played

basketball and wrestled in the same season. The sixth grader helped his basketball team place second at a tournament.

Displaying sportsmanship on the court, terrain and mat, he also showed discipline by

completing all school assignments without supervision and achieving top grades with a 3.5 GPA to make the Honor Roll again.

Albert, 12, a Miami resident, also plays baritone in the band and can play keyboards. He regularly attends church youth group.

• Philip M Hernandez

Philip, 13, competes for the Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic School varsity basketball team. Prior, he was a member of the school’s junior varsity team. He also made the

school’s junior varsity and varsity football teams and plays golf. He earned the football team’s Most Improved award.

An eighth grader, Philip is a straight ‘A’ student, and his average in each class is 94.

The standout student athlete resides in Miramar.

• Channise Aryan Lewis

Channise, 14, started playing basketball in 2006 at age 8 for the Northwest Boy & Girls Club. She led her team to the semifinals her first year and the finals her second year. She was awarded team MVP.

At Myrtle Grove Elementry School, in fifth grade, she was named the top girl in Physical Education. In 2011, she played with the South Florida Lady Lightning travel team where

she was chosen All Tournament for the Jupiter Courier Jam and for the Big Orange Classic. She led the Lady Lightning to the state title (winning the MVP trophy) and then the USSSA National championship in North Carolina.

In 2012, as the only girl on the North Miami Beach Boys & Girls Club team, she led her team to the championship in the Dade Youth Basketball League. With only five girls on the 2012 version of the South Florida Lady Lightning, she led them to the Jupiter Jam

Tournament title. As a seventh grader, she played for Below the Rim, an elite travel team, with some of the best junior and senior high school players.

An eighth grader at Miami Country Day School, she starts on the high school girls’varsity team. She led the Spartans to the Adidas Tournament title where she earned another MVP award and was instrumental in the team’s FHSAA district and region titles

and school record state final berth.

Prior, she played volleyball and tennis for Parkway Middle School in Miami.

She made the Dean’s List, won a Do the Right Thing award, received a key to the City of Miami Gardens and was selected Junior Carnival Queen for the Miami Caribbean Carnival.

• Simi Serfati

Simi, 13, competed for the Scheck Hillel Community lower school girls’ basketball team

before making the middle school team. She also participated in soccer and volleyball.

A positive student athlete with character, she won the Coach’s Award for basketball and soccer. A seventh grader, she also made the Distinguished Honor Roll and carries



a 4.23 grade point average. Simi, an Aventura resident, is also proficient in dance and

piano.

Max Bratter scored six points, and Ezra Rivera added five points as the Thunder

defeated the Celtics 15-9 in the 9-11 age group of the Miami Beach Traveling Basketball League at Flamingo Park. Noah Dinic scored all nine points for the Celtics.

The Lakers defeated the Bulls 21-19. Brock Levin scored 13 points, and Zach Barcenas scored 4 points. Joshua Neely had 7 points and Max Gotlin added 6 points for the Bulls.

More tennis

The 2013 ITF/USTA US Senior World Cup teams have been announced. These teams will travel to Antalya, Turkey to play in the Senior International World Team Championships in March. Miami’s Mario Tabares will captain the U.S. team in the Dubler Cup (Men’s 45 Division).

Gulliver challenge

Gulliver’s Raider Challenge 11th annual Golf Classic and 4th annual Tennis Tournament occurred at the Deering Bay Yacht & Country Club in Coral Gables.

This annual event was presented by AA Uniform and Ola Construction. The tournaments were a huge success, selling out far in advance of the event and raising more than $60,000 to benefit the booster club, which supports athletics at Gulliver Preparatory School.

Before the tennis tournament, players were greeted with a gift bag, continental breakfast, silent auction and raffle prizes. Tournament winners were awarded during a luncheon in the club’s Crystal Room. Marc Seymour and Dan Mulligan won top trophies in the men’s division. Sheba Quirk and Marianne Pantin won the women’s A Division. Mina Schultes and Yannik Labrador won the women’s B Division.

The golf outing welcomed 144 golfers. The traditional “Are you Better than a Gulliver Student Golfer?” contest ramped up the competition. Stationed at different holes, student golfers Zachary Buttrick, John Ehrling, Roman Lopez and Max McKenna challenged tournament golfers to beat them in distance from the tee.

More than 200 attended the awards dinner to see the tournament championship handed to Jeff Baxter, Marshal Smith, Calum Gibb and Chuck Mercer. Runners-up were Dan Cautier, John Carlisle, Matt Jonah and Matt Pattulo. Guests also enjoyed an assortment of raffle prizes, including Kindle Fires, golf clubs and a 51-inch television.

Mercedes Benz of Coral Gables and Williamson Automotive Cadillac BUICK GMC provided three different cars for the hole-in-one contests. Masseuses from Hand & Stone Massage and Facial Spa provided chair massages when the golfers exited the course. Each golfer received a plush gift bag complete with a golf shirt and windbreaker.

Department, which created the program, invited 100 Florida and Georgia high school students to participate in a variety of on and off the field programs.

The two-day program, which was facilitated by VTO Sports, is specifically designed for

athletes to learn the benefits of academics and to further develop their leadership skills in both athletics and academics.

“The whole weekend went great. One of the big goals of this event is to really transform how camps are done,” VTO Sports Senior Vice President Odis Lloyd said. “The experience of being at a professional facility - you can’t beat it. The kids got to see what

the pros see. It’s a dream come true for them. To have an opportunity to be here was absolutely fantastic.”

Former NFL players provided insight on the academic and athletic experiences of a

professional athlete. The players told the students the specific colleges they attended and what degrees they graduated with, emphasizing the importance of education.

Other off-the-field activities included presentations by APTUS, the NFL and the NCAA. On-field activities included individual and team position drills as well as Sunday’s challenge between the student-athletes at the Dolphins indoor training facility.

Dolphins flag football clinic

The Miami Dolphins hosted the team’s annual Girls High School Flag Football Clinic,

presented by UnderArmour, at the Doctors Hospital Training Facility at Nova Southeastern University in Davie. The event featured 16 high school teams throughout South Florida that participated in a series of interactive football drills.

“The participation was probably double of where we were last year,” said Rocky Gillis, the BCAA Athletic Director. “The girls love the interaction with the alumni players, and I

just think it’s a great event. Being in the Dolphins bubble was an experience of a life time for the girls.”

At the clinic, Miami Dolphins Director of Youth Programs Twan Russell, who is also a

former University of Miami and Dolphins linebacker, and other former NFL players spoke to the girls about the importance of academics and making choices that will have

a positive impact on their future.



“The participation from the girls was excellent,” Russell said. “You could tell that they

really got a lot out of this event.”

After the speeches, nearly 300 girls participated in a variety of stations, taught by the

alumni players. The drills emphasized fundamental skills such as throwing, catching and stances.

Highland Oaks track & field

The Highland Oaks Middle School JV boys’ track team won the Miami-Dade County Track & Field Championship for the second consecutive year at Traz Powell Stadium.

Jamir Fergsuon repeated as county champ in the 800- and 1,600-meter runs. The 3,200 relay team (Ferguson, Derrick Spicer, Timothy Williams, Pablo Rosero) took first. Neil Fagan won the high jump, placed second in the long jump and finished fourth in

the 400. Spicer was second in the 800 and 1,600.

The 400 relay team (Fagan, Jordan Anderson, Rosero, Shaggion Milligan) placed third.

Bryce Coq was third in the discus and sixth in the shot put. Milligan was fifth in the triple jump. Anderson was third in the high jump, fifth in the 200 and sixth in the 100. The 1,600 relay (Williams, Rosero, Wilfred Coleau, Gage Gainey) was sixth.

The Highland Oaks JV girls were second of 25 teams. Maryann Jadotte won the 100 and took second in the shot put and discus. Tianna Jackson won the long jump, with

Coreena Saintilmond placing second. Saintilmond also placed fifth in the 200.

Samantha Castano, Saharee Davey, Jadotte and Saintilmond won the 400 relay. The 1,600 relay (Castano, Davey, Tramese Pierre, Hayley Piper) also won. Pierre was fifth

in the shot put and Castano sixth in the 400. The 3,200 relay (Pierre, Piper, Anicia Collins, Katherine Elizabeth) was fifth. Collins also finished eighth in the triple jump.

For girls’ varsity, Vantae Williams won the discus for the third consecutive year for

Highland Oaks. Williams also placed second in the shot put. Takendra Hall was eighth in the shot put, and Brittany Malone was eighth in the 400.

The lone Highland Oaks runner for the varsity boys was Malik Watson, who placed fifth in the 1,600.

Columbus lacrosse

The Columbus High School boys’ varsity lacrosse team, led by Miami Herald Miami-Dade County Coach of the Year Jim Delang, returned to its form of last season with a

resounding win over visiting Palm Beach Central 17-5.

The experienced, senior-laden Explorers were dominant at both ends of the field. A tenacious defense was led by seniors Omar Shabazz, Danny Gomez and goalkeeper

Michael Davide (five saves) and Robert Penichet who also assisted in goal (four saves). Shabazz had two goals, including the goal of the game, with a dodging length

of the field drive and precision shot. Nick Velikopolski was solid on defense, stealing the ball and making a series of fakes and moves through several defenders to set up the offense.

The offense provided sharp passing and a well-orchestrated attack led by seniors Grant

Nordlund and Steven Hernandez who led all scorers with four goals and three assists. Alec Carreras and Nordlund each added three goals and three assists.

The mainstay of this game was the exceptional play at face-off by Jake Quigley and Nick Quintairos where the Explorers won more than 75 percent of those battles, allowing the offense a variety of opportunities.

• Columbus defeated Belen 14-2 for its fourth consecutive victory. The seniors have never lost to their archrival.

Leading the Explorers again were senior goalkeeper Marcus Davide with double digits saves for the second consecutive game and senior attack Grant Nordlund with five goals and two assists. Jake Quigley ignited the offense winning numerous faceoffs.

Alec Carreras stepped up his game with four points (two goals, two assists). Steven Hernandez added two goals and an assist, and Marcus Davide scored twice. Nicky

Quintairos, Michael Bulnes, Sebi Cancio, Alex Ferran and Frankie Suarez also scored.

Conchita Espinosa basketball

Megan Gonzalez grabbed a team-high seven rebounds, and Cristina Hernandez led all

scorers with eight points as the Conchita Espinosa Academy girls’ varsity basketball team (7th and 8th graders) defeated Everglades Middle School 37-19.

The boys’ varsity basketball team (7th and 8th graders) evened its record at 6-6 with a victory over First United. Francis Aixala and Alex De La Cruz each had six points and eight rebounds.

The JV basketball team (5th and 6th graders) improved to 7-2 by beating First United 54-24. Danny Sardinas led all scorers with a career-high 22 points.

Belen baseball

Shortstop Bert Campy Campaneris, a Cuban American who starred for the Oakland A’s in the 1960s and 70s, helping them win three consecutive World Series titles (1972-74),

spoke to the Belen Jesuit Preparatory School baseball teams.

A six-time all-star, Campaneris led the major leagues in stolen bases twice. He stole more than 630 bases is his distinguished major league career (1964-83). A small,

skinny player at 5-10, 160 pounds, he proved size doesn’t matter. He was solid defensively with sound range and was a good contact hitter.

Spartan Super Fans: The Miami Country Day Athletic Department thanks everyone who supported the girls’ varsity basketball team during its run to the state finals. Three to four buses of fans drove from Miami to Lakeland for the state semifinals and finals. Decked in MCD Spartans’ red, the energy was electric, and the school spirit was incredible.

USA Triathlon

USA Triathlon aims to return multisport to its roots with the inaugural USA Triathlon Retro Tri Series, which debuts this spring with 10 beginner-friendly events -- one in each USA Triathlon region including Miami.

The focus of the Retro Tri Series is participation, rather than competition. The aim of the events is to introduce the sport of triathlon and educate race participants about the healthy and active multisport lifestyle. The events are open to first-timers, seasoned veterans and those looking to stay active -- swimming, biking and running in a safe atmosphere. Each event is sanctioned by USA Triathlon.



“Our new Retro Tri Series events offer something for anyone interested in participating

With the aim of introducing more athletes to the exciting multisport discipline of duathlon, USA Triathlon unveiled the 10 events that will comprise the 2013 USA Triathlon Duathlon Race Series including one in Florida.

Miami Lady Express basketball

The Miami Lady Express girls’ basketball team needs funding to continue competing in

MLB Pitch, Hit & Run

Major League Baseball invites you to host a local competition of Pitch, Hit & Run,

presented by Scotts.

Any coach, parent or adult volunteer can host a competition, a one-day community event that can be run in just a few hours.

Boys and girls, age 7-14, have the opportunity to advance through four levels of competition, including Team Championships at Major League ballparks and the

National Finals at the 2013 MLB All-Star Game.

Marlins Tours

The Miami Marlins offer behind the scenes tours of Marlins Park. The tours are open to the public on non-event days for $10 a person.

The tour includes visits to the field (behind home plate), home clubhouse, home batting cage area and Diamond Club, Promenade Level featuring the art in the facility, the bobblehead museum and the premium areas including the Suites.

Tours operate from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Saturday, except when the Marlins play at home or when other major events are scheduled at Marlins Park. Group tours, accommodating between 10 and 25 people, are available by appointment.
