Summer of LoveKIMPTON HOTElS and its Florida properties have a legacy of embracing diversity since the brand was founded in 1981, and as a result they enthusiastically celebrate Florida’s recent ruling to lift the state’s ban on same-sex marriage. Offering an oceanfront setting ideal for couples looking to tie the knot, Kimpton’s Surfcomber Miami, South Beach, is pleased to offer their top-rated wedding amenities and packages to same-sex couples on their big day.

Home to 186 guestrooms and located in the heart of the Art Deco District in South Beach on historic Collins Avenue. The Surfcomber offers guests a retro, breezy atmosphere with design-driven spaces. This brings together the eclectic style of European Bohemia, with the inviting feel and comfort of America’s back porch to create elements of surprise throughout. The style of the hotel is an example of transitional architecture, bridging the ornamental styles of art deco from the 1930s with the streamlined and modern graphics language of the late forties and fifties.

Situated along 200 feet of Atlantic oceanfront, Surfcomber’s pool deck, has the largest pool deck in South Beach offering a setting for weddings of any size from 25 to 500. Gracious hospitality and personalized attention complement the boutique hotel’s flexible indoor spaces. From personalized catering to comprehensive wedding planning, brides and grooms can experience beachside wedding bliss with innovative offerings and chef-driven menus. Weddings at Surfcomber are as seamless as they are stunning. Specifically, Surfcomber’s “love is love” package, offers guests four hours of deluxe-brand bar service, four butlers serving hors d’oeuvres and a three-course dinner, including a custom-designed wedding cake for guests.

“We celebrate in the joy that comes with creating loving unions and the recent ruling that same-sex marriage is now legal in the State of Florida,” said Eric Jellson, Director of Marketing & Strategy, Kimpton Hotels, Florida & Cayman Islands. “We have always warmly welcomed guests of all orientations and persuasions, and are proud of the following we have established among the lGBT community, particularly here in Florida. So it is with great excitement that we now look forward to helping all couples celebrate their ‘big day’!”

The 14th Annual Gala & Awards Celebration, “The Sapphire Gala,” hosted by the Miami-Dade Gay & lesbian Chamber Of Commerce (MDGlCC) became once again the perfect gathering for the business elite, local government representatives, and leading members of the lGBT and allied communities to glitter for a cause.

The “Billion Dollar Sandbar” acted as the idyllic location for an event that has become one of spring season’s musts, where corporate and individual supporters of the Miami-Dade lGBT community are recognized for their continuous efforts to encourage diversity, fueling initiatives to improve the quality of life in South Florida. The event, hosted at the ultra-chic 1 Hotel & Homes South Beach, was once again proudly presented by Wells Fargo.

“This year’s gala totally exceeded our expectations,” said Steve Adkins, MDGlCC president. “The revenue generated will definitely help us enlarge our staff in order to add programming focusing on women and young professionals.”

Setting the tone for the rest of the night and in full alignment with the luxurious vibe of the event, Mercedes-Benz of Coral Gables welcomed guests with an opulent 2016 S550 Sedan, epitome of technology and motoring indulgence, displayed at the valet parking area of the host hotel for the viewing pleasure of the attendants.

Once inside the hotel, the nature-inspired decor welcomed the select who’s who of the MDGlCC members and guests. They were greeted with Bombay Sapphire Dry Gin® specialty drinks and offered fizzy prosecco sparkling wine from Bacardi, the prestigious spirit company who sponsored the bar service with its comprehensive line of exclusive products including the popular GREY GOOSE vodka.

Clearly one of the night’s highlights, “The Sapphire Gala” kicked off with a silent auction with the novelty of being conducted through

BidPal, a cutting-edge system that allowed guests to use their smartphones to bid for highly-coveted items such as the American Airlines Miles Certificates. Music lovers rejoiced with the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino gift-basket, upping the bidding to a whole new level, for a prize that included an electric guitar signed by the one and only Go-Go’s and a two-night stay voucher for South Florida’s ultimate destination for fun and entertainment. In addition to the silent auction, the MDGlCC offered a raffle with the lucky winner taking home his choice of a three- or four-day cruise on Royal Caribbean’s Majesty of the Seas.

The organic, farm-to-table inspired menu signed by renowned Chef Tom Colicchio was the talk of the night. The fortunate guests were indulged with a locally sourced, organic meal that included a “super food” salad, Florida rock shrimp, free-range chicken and steak with authentic chimichurri sauce, among other delicacies.

MDGlCC proudly introduced its new “Bon Balsam Civic Achievement Award” as a tribute to his life and legacy as former Miami Beach Convention Center General Manager. The inaugural award was presented to Miami Beach Mayor Philip levine, a proactive advocate for lGBT rights and inclusion, both for Miami Beach residents and businesses. Since being elected Mayor in 2013, he has made countless

appearances at lGBT events and fundraisers and on behalf of lGBT organizations.

During dinner, “The Sapphire Gala” paid tribute to four award honorees – DecoBike,

Cindy Brown, Adrienne Arsht Center and Mayor Philip levine. They were selected for their long-term commitment to fostering diversity, as well as their efforts in contributing to the overall quality of life in South Florida. One of

the most celebrated awardees of the night was Cindy Brown, who was honored with the AT&T “Business Person of the Year” award for her leading role in reaching out to lGBT organizations and positioning the Botanical Garden as a unique venue for memorable events for the community.

Following the dinner and awards presentation, guests were treated to entertainment and dancing to the spinning of DJ/Producer Maximus 3000 at the Jackson Miracle After Party. A memorable performance by Miss Miami Beach Gay Pride 2013 and “Favorite Drag Queen” for the 2014 Pink Flamingo Awards — Tiffany Fantasia. Attendants enjoyed her unforgettable tribute to Whitney Houston’s “I’m Every Woman” sporting a breathtaking outfit complemented by an epic wig that will surely be remembered for years to come.

“The Sapphire Gala” was the MDGlCC’s principal fundraiser of the year, which helps sustain operations and expand the ever-increasing demand for member programming. Presented by Well Fargo Bank, “The Sapphire Gala” was produced by the MDGlCC & GAlRDON. Major event sponsors included GREY GOOSE® Vodka, AT&T, Morgan Stanley, Regions Bank, American Airlines, Mercedes-Benz of Coral Gables, Jackson Health System, Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau, 1 Hotels & Homes

Spotlight InterviewROBIN SCHWARTz

we always start our interviews by asking you to tell us a bit about yourself and, if you have always lived in Miami?

I was born in Miami, 53 years ago on June 11. I was born in Hialeah Hospital. Despite not having any latin family, I enjoy dancing merengue and salsa and I’m pretty good so I like to joke about it.

I live with my partner, Wendy and our three dogs, Stella, Pooka and Sebastian. I am currently a licensed loan Originator. Previously, Executive Director of Aqua Foundation for Women.

as a professional women representing the LgBt Community, what are some of your “keys to success” in building that base?

Building a circle of friends and business partners is all about building relationships. As I attend various events I meet wonderful folks. The key to building my circle is to reach out to connect with them after the event and then continuing to do so. Of course it always helps when there is a common bond such as being part of the lGBTQ community and even better when we are all working together towards a common goal. I think its also important to long term relationships that I am a person of integrity. I believe strongly in doing what is right and I do what I say I’m going to do.

you have been very active with local LgBt organizations. why do you find activism important?

I believe we all should do our part to make the world a better place. Sounds corny but I believe in this. If each of us did our part we could accomplish so much. With this in mind I do my part. I’ve always been someone who others lean on. It is just part of my DNA. I am compelled to “fix” things when I see they need fixing. When I learned of the plight of homeless lGBTQ youth in South Florida I knew as Executive Director of Aqua Foundation I had a responsibility to do something. In fact it wasn’t even something I thought about. The moment it came to my attention via Carla Silva I instinctively said to her, I’m going to make

sure Aqua makes a difference for the youth. There is just something in me that feels the need to help others and be a part of the community in a meaningful way.

you just recently transitioned back into the for-profit business world. tell us about what you look forward as you open this new chapter in your life.

While I do miss certain aspects of the nonprofit world, mostly the people, I am excited about this new chapter. One of the reasons I wanted to get back into the mortgage business is flexibility. Most of my business is done via the phone and email so I am able to work from anywhere. My partner, Wendy and I want to be able to go away for a few months in the summer. I also enjoy guiding clients in the home financing process. It’s an important decision and I like that I am able to provide valuable information so borrowers can make the right decision for their situation. I also like managing the process. It’s a complicated business and I am able and willing to make the process simpler for the buyers.

you have been a member of MdgLCC for many years. what makes the Chamber worthy of that support?

Any business chamber can be valuable if the member works it. An additional plus to the MDGlCC is that its members are either lGBTQ or lGBTQ friendly. This is important to me. Due to Steve’s leadership the MDGlCC is more than a business chamber. He and the entire organization lead our community. Also, MDGlCC is a very active chamber. This gives me many opportunities to meet potential clients and others who can refer business.

ARE YOu AWARE that there are literally billions of dollars of opportunities available to lGBT-owned companies? Did you know the National Gay & lesbian Chamber of Commerce (NGlCC) is the exclusive national third party certifying body for lGBT-owned businesses? Furthermore, did you know that MDGlCC is the NGlCC’s official greater Miami affiliate chamber and your direct link to this certification? You might be asking yourself what is certification and what does it mean exactly? like programs established decades ago for women and ethnic minority communities, lGBT Business Enterprise (lGBTBE) certification allows companies at are at least 51 percent owned, operated and controlled by an lGBT person or persons to access to contracting opportunities with major corporations, government entities and one another. Already more

than one third of the Fortune 500 accept NGlCC certification. Companies like IBM, American Airlines, Wells Fargo, Google, Apple, Target, and many more spend billions of dollars every year purchasing products and services from certified diverse owned businesses, including lGBTBEs.

What is incredibly exciting about this year and this summer is that from August 11-14, 2015 NGlCC will be hosting our annual International Business and leadership Conference very near Miami, at the Marriott Harbor Beach in Fort lauderdale. This event, now in its 12th year, is the largest lGBT business development event in the world and will bring together more than 800 lGBT and allied entrepreneurs, business owners, corporate representatives, and lGBT chamber leaders from across the country and around the globe.

Among those in attendance will be over 150 corporate representatives with the specific mission to meet potential new lGBTBEs and strengthen relationships with others, not despite the fact the companies are lGBT-owned, but because they are! Attendees will take part in three days of symposia, panel discussions, development seminars, and special events designed to generate business opportunities and build strong relationships with corporate champions and one another.

NGlCC is thrilled to bring a number of high profile speakers to this year’s conference. We are certain that they will add valuable insights, business savvy, and fun to your conference experience.

LGBTBE Certification: What is it and how does it help me grow my business? Many factors contribute to a successful business. Of course the entrepreneurial spirit, the drive and innovation to create and succeed, is primary. The knowledge to maintain and balance business and personal finances, and the ability to shape and communicate your brand are paramount as well. Successful business owners need access to strong and supportive networks and must have the resources and opportunities to scale their companies.

Sally Hogshead, the New York Times bestselling author of How the World Sees You, will kickoff Opening Session with her patented Fascination Advantage® system, which will empower you to fascinate anyone in nine seconds. Hogshead’s system provides people with the know-how to shape and communicate their own personal brand and capitalize on their strengths.

Personal finance guru and South Florida resident, Suze Orman, will deliver the keynote speech during Wednesday’s

luncheon plenary. Called “a force in the world of personal finance” and a “one-woman financial advice powerhouse” by uSA Today, Orman is undeniably the most recognized expert on personal finance in America today.

Out CNN international business correspondent and host of Quest Means Business, Richard Quest, and Jonathan Capehart of the Washington Post and MSNBC, will also be speaking at conference, along with dozens of lGBTBEs, corporate representatives and affiliate chamber leaders.

The NGlCC conference also provides resources and matchmaker networking for certified lGBT-owned Business Enterprises (lGBTBEs). By becoming a certified lGBTBE, businesses are able to build relationships with America’s leading corporations, generate prospective business and clients, and collectively team with each other for contracting opportunities. Keep in mind that

as a member of MDGlCC, businesses eligible for certification have their fee waived and receive discounted conference registration.

As corporate America becomes more inclusive and further diversifies its supply chain, certification offers the opportunity for lGBT-owned businesses to differentiate themselves from their competitors. Haven’t thought about certification before? I think it’s time.

South Beach continues to be the global epicenter of what’s new, fresh and alluring in Miami and that is further exemplified as JMH Development, Madden Real Estate Ventures and Starwood Hotels & Resorts announce the official opening of Aloft South Beach at 2360 Collins Avenue, summer 2015. Aloft South Beach wraps guests in a warm and buzzing environment from the moment they enter the property by offering an array of modern amenities, intuitive technology, and playfully engaging spaces surrounding their 235 loft-like rooms. It also ushers in Continental Miami, an exciting new dining destination established by acclaimed restaurateur Stephen Starr.

Building on the foundation of the historic 1954 Ankara Motel, the Aloft South Beach has taken great care to preserve the Art Deco-inspired architecture on the exterior while breathing fresh life into a newly constructed interior with contemporary elements. The design and furnishings were chosen to strike a balance between the hotel’s relaxed spirit, its Miami Beach location, and the structure’s historic significance. Components of the hotel that have retained their original form include the classic brick walls of the

Historic Wing, refurbished Ankara Motel signage and the pool shape. Inside, modern design takes center stage as a translucent staircase welcomes guests into the thriving two-story atrium with custom leather wrapping and a striking light fixture inspired by drum cymbals. Additionally, the bar and lounge features a custom chandelier by Yellow Goat Design made of 1,000 colored acrylic lighting rods descending from the ceiling.

There are a multitude of new properties unveiling in Miami Beach at the moment. And now, the name of the game is to set your hotel apart from the rest. Gone are the days of each hotel in Miami Beach being uniquely different. So, at Aloft South Beach, we believe the key to success is in differentiating ourselves from the rest through creating

distinctive and memorable experiences. Customer service is arguably an area in which the Miami Beach Hospitality industry can improve upon. And while this perception can be debated, it’s certainly a conversation topic in our rapidly emerging market. It’s the little things that make a world of difference in a guest experience, and that is our sole focus for all local, domestic and international guests that choose to stay at the new Aloft South Beach. We are committed to making sure that our guests truly feel like guests!

Different studies have found that a concentration of belly fat in overweight individuals can contribute to a higher risk for heart disease. A recent study found that belly fat creates a higher risk for sudden cardiac arrest, which is the result of an electrical malfunction that causes the heart to beat irregularly.

There are many lifestyle and medical options for those seeking to lose belly fat and stay healthy. Here are five tips from Marie Almon, a registered dietitian with Baptist Health Primary Care.

1. Avoid refined carbohydratesYou’re more likely to develop belly fat when your diet is packed with calories, refined carbohydrates and sugar, Ms. Almon says. Refined carbs include baked goods, white bread, white pasta and white rice. “Eating refined carbs leads to a surge in blood sugar levels and insulin, which in turn increases the amount of belly fat that the body will store,” she says.

2. Eat whole grains and high-fiber foods.High-fiber diets have been linked to weight loss, and you’re less likely to

overeat when you get enough fiber. A healthy diet contains a daily serving of 25 grams of fiber for women and 38 grams of fiber for men.

“Fiber helps keep us stay full and feel more satisfied for a longer period of time,” Ms. Almon says.

Food products such as brown rice and 100 percent whole wheat are considered whole grains.

3. Chose the right type of fatty foods.Medical and dietary experts praise the health value of monounsaturated fats, which are simple fats. Mono fats help reduce belly fat, Ms. Almon says. Excellent sources of mono fats include avocados, seeds and olive oils. The American Heart Association has linked mono fats to:

• Reduction in bad cholesterol levels.

• Lower risk of heart disease and stroke.

• Increase in nutrients that maintain the health of cells in the body.

Omega-3 fatty acids also are important in controlling belly fats, Ms. Almon says. Great sources of omega-3 fatty acids include salmon, walnuts, flax seeds and chia seeds.

4. Get enough sleep.lack of sleep upsets the normal activities of two hormones that control our appetite. When you’re starved for sleep, appetite-controlling hormones are thrown off balance. “When you are sleep deprived, you tend to crave more carbs during the day–usually processed carbs such as donuts, cakes and cookies”, Ms. Almon says.

5. Stay active.“Exercise is always important, and any good nutritional program should include exercise,” Ms. Almon says.

how Would you Like to Get More Time in your Day?

In today’s hectic environment we find it is harder every day to make time for our daily chores. This is when a personal concierge service comes to the rescue.

let me invite you to take a minute to look around your space. What do you see? How many started projects are

sitting left unfinished? How many times have you said, “I’ll organize my closet next week?” or “I will unpack those last boxes from the move” a year ago. When was the last time you cleaned and detailed your car? When was the last time you had any maintenance done on your car? Are you dreading your next move? How about the pile of laundry you haven’t had the time to take to the cleaners?

Don’t worry. You are not alone. Most of us find ourselves running from one place to the next with the added frustration of the Miami traffic. Taking the kids to sports practice, meet coworkers for happy hour, dinner with friends, and the all important in todays business environment…networking! Then there is shopping.

up until now the only ones that have been able to afford to have a personal concierge service have been the ultra rich, movie stars, entertainment icons, high performance athletes, company CEO’s and the like of any VIP’s. Now there are personal concierge services that are within reach to the up and coming professionals. All you have to do is make one phone call and let them take care of the rest. Do you need somebody to take a look at the washer, but you have to be at work when the repairman is coming to look at it? They will schedule and coordinate with you so they will be at your home waiting for the repairman and making sure the job gets done and your home is secure. Concierge services are a one stop shopping for the busy person. let them find the plumber, the electrician, pick up your dry cleaning, organize your closet, pack and unpack your things during your next move, pick you up and drop you off at the airport. Make your reservations and suggest a place for that romantic dinner for your anniversary. All you have to do is just relax and let them take care of the things that still need to be done that prevented you from having that spa appointment, or that extra round of golf.

leave the errands to a personal concierge service. They will help you find your time so you can enjoy your summer with your family and friends.

Over 10 years ago when The Board of Directors of the Miami Gay Men’s Chorus (MGMC) decided to join the Chamber it was to support LGBT businesses, network with the community, and help to

expand the arts. Our membership has not only received these basic benefits, but a lot more! The MGMC has had the opportunity to expand our audience through the many networking events, grow our ticket sales through performances at Chamber activities and educate our Leadership through workshops and educational offerings. As a non-profit arts organization we consider our membership in the MDGLCC a requirement for our continued growth and success and an HONOR.

As a community chamber (versus a civic chamber), we encourage both our gay and gay-friendly family to support those who support us. One of the benefits of membership in MDGlCC is the knowledge that a $7 billion local lGBT market searches our roster of members first when making purchase decisions about goods and services. With a list of over 600 companies comprising our membership, more likely than not you will find what you are looking for.

As corporate America looks to diversify its revenue stream, the lGBT market is increasingly being looked to for growth. The best way we can make the greatest impact is to speak with our pocketbooks and use Chamber Members whenever possible.
