Quick Hits

Jennies Rankings

A pair of Jennies seniors are climbing the UCM all-time rankings. Libero Annie Reilly surpassed the 200 ace mark in the

Jennies first match against Fort Hays State (10/2). With 220 career aces, Reilly becomes just the third Jennie to reach

the milestone and is second all-time at UCM.

Reilly also moved into second-place at UCM in career digs with her 27 at Missouri Western (11/12). With 2,572, she

is also in second-place in MIAA history.

In addition to Reilly, Carly Sojka is moving up on the all-time points and kills lists. She’s recorded 583.5 points in 34

matches and has now accumulated 1,848 career points. Sojka moved into second-place all-time in points in the MIAA

Finals and is 37 points away from becoming the Jennies all-time leader.

Sojka also became just the 10th Jennie to record 1500 career kills Oct. 24 against Nebraska-Kearney. With 1,652

kills, she is the fifth to ever reach 1600 career kills and is fifth all-time.

National Rankings (as of 11/23/15)

In addition to their career rankings at UCM, Reilly and Sojka are among elite company in the NCAA Division II. Among

all active players, Reilly is the active NCAA-D2 leader with 2,572 career digs, the only player in Division II with more

than 2,500 digs and third among all active players in the NCAA, across all divisions. She is also in the top-five in ser-

vice aces with her 220 placing her fifth.

Sojka has also climbed into the top-five among active NCAA players in kills. With 1,652 career kills, Sojka is fourth

among active players.

UCM in the Polls

After going 3-0 last week, and winning the MIAA Tournament the Jennies moved up five spots to No. 8 in the AVCA

Coaches Poll. UCM started the season at No. 13 in the preseason poll and has been ranked as high as No. 6. Of the

13 AVCA Polls this season, UCM has been ranked No.13 in six of them, including the last three. The Jens have been

ranked in every AVCA poll since its inception in 1986, a span of 383 polls.

National Leaders (as of 11/23/15)

Carly Sojka is ranked in the NCAA top-15 in three different categories. She is sixth in the nation with a career-high

509 total kills. She’s also 11th with 4.90 points per set and 13th with 4.28 kills per set. Her 509 kills are the most by a

Jennie in a single season since Elyse mohme landed 593 in 2004.

Annie Reilly is in the NCAA top-20 in digs per set. She’s 20th in the nation and second in the MIAA with 5.81 digs per

set. She is also 11th with a career-high 691 total digs. She’s nine away from 700, which would make her the first Jen-

nie since Rachel Fister in 2009 who totaled 708 digs with 700 digs in a single-season.

As a team, UCM is in the Division II top-10 in four different categories. The Jens lead the nation in kills per set with

15.07 and are fourth in total kills with 1,793. They are also fifth in assists per set with 13.61 and seventh in total as-

sists with 1,620. They’re also just outside the top-10 with a .265 team attack percentage which ranks 12th.

Awards Ceremony

The MIAA announced their All-conference team with seven Jennies earning the honor. Carly Sojka headlined the group

as she was named the 16th MIAA Player of the Year in team history. Her and Maddie Jones were unanimous selections

to the First Team while Annie Reilly made her third straight All-MIAA First Team. Kourtney Thompson was selected to the

Second Team and newcomers Kasey, Hohlen, Kylie Hohlen and Cheyanne Lyons were Honorable Mention.

“Flip” the Calendar

The Jennies have historically played some of their best volleyball when the calendar turns to November. Under Coach

Piontek, the Jennies are 49-5 (.907) in the month of November. In 2014, the Jennies went 6-1 with their only loss com-

ing at the NCAA Regional to Wayne St. (Neb.). They are 8-0 thus far in 2015.

Versus Ranked Opponents

The Jennies this season are 5-3 against ranked opponents and 52-29 all-time under Head Coach Flip Piontek. The Jen-

nies final two matches of the MIAA Tournament came against ranked opponents, and Central Missouri has won their last

four matches against teams in the top-25.

Head coacH FliP PiontekFlip Piontek enters his seventh season as the Head Coach of Jennies Volleyball, and his 30th year with the program in 2015.

After 23 seasons as the Jennies assistant coach, Piontek was named head coach prior to the 2009 season. In his time at the helm, Piontek has guided the program to two NCAA Regional Championships and five MIAA titles.Piontek has seen 21 players earn AVCA All-American honors, and 39 All-MIAA Team selections. In 2011, three Jennies were named First Team AVCA All-Americans and Allie Huffman was the MIAA Player of the Year, the first Jennie to earn the award since 1999.

Last season, the Jennies went 22-9 and 19-3 in the MIAA, winning a share of the conference crown. The Jennies returned to the NCAA tournament for the 32nd straight season and remained ranked by the AVCA each week of the poll. The Jens also had all six starters and libero named All-MIAA and three made the AVCA All-American Team.

In 2013, he led the Jennies to their fourth MIAA regular season title in five years and a 33-2 overall record. The .943 winning percentage is the best single-season mark in program history. The Jennies also captured the MIAA Tournament title with Julia Bates being named the MIAA Player of the Year. In addition, four Jennies were named All-Americans.

In 2012, Piontek led the Jennies to their record 30th consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament while competing in what was easily the most competitive region in NCAA Division II. All eight teams in the regional were nationally ranked, including the Jennies, who were among the top 10 in the AVCA Coaches’ Poll all season.

He also reached a milestone in 2012, earning his 100th career win with a 3-2 victory over then-No. 17 Lewis. In his first five seasons, Piontek had a 155-24 record, and an 84-8 mark in conference play, the best MIAA record over that time.

In 2011, the Jennies made their second consecutive NCAA Elite Eight appearance after claiming the NCAA South Central Regional title on their home court. The Jens also claimed their third straight MIAA regular season title, dropping just one conference match all season.

In 2010, he guided the squad to its highest postseason finish since 1987. UCM hosted a second-straight South Central Regional and were victorious, returning to the NCAA Elite Eight for the first time since 1996. In just his second season at the helm, the team worked its way to the NCAA national semifinal match, losing three close sets to second-ranked University of Tampa.

In his inaugural season of 2009, Piontek led UCM to its first outright MIAA championship since 1999, and earned the right to host the 2009 NCAA South Central Regional, where the Jennies advanced the regional championship game.

Piontek specializes in teaching the technical aspects of the game, doing so during his tenure as an assistant. With Piontek on the bench, the Jennies have claimed 20 MIAA titles, and have been to the NCAA Tournament in each of his 29 seasons.

Piontek first joined the Jennies program in time for the 1986 season. He spent three years prior to that (from 1982-84) as an assistant at the U.S. Air Force Academy, where he helped the Falcons win two league titles and finish third at the 1983 NCAA Division II Tournament.

While this is his first head coaching job at the collegiate level, Piontek has several years of experience in the club and professional ranks. In the summer of 2001, Piontek coached the Missouri/Kansas High Performance Team to a third-place finish at the inaugural USA Volleyball High Performance Colorado Cup.

In 1998, Piontek served as co-head coach of the Kansas City Lightning, the first professional women’s volleyball team in Kansas City. He helped the Lightning to a 7-1 record and a regular-season league title before they fell in the semifinals of the playoffs to the eventual champion Nebraska Tornados. In the winter of 2013, Piontek joined USA Volleyball’s Heart of America Havoc professional team as an assistant. The Havoc went 5-4 his first season during the 2012-13 season to finish ninth, and 6-3 in the 2013-14 season with a fifth place finish at the PVL Championships.

An Air Force veteran who played volleyball while in the service, Piontek is active in the sport as he has helped several teams qualify for the USAV Nationals as a player and was a nationally certified referee and scorekeeper. He also served as a line judge during the beach volleyball competition at the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta.

Piontek earned his bachelor’s degree in history from the Academy in 1975. He also received a master’s degree in history from Indiana University later that same year and a second master’s degree in business administration from Central Missouri in 1988.

Piontek and his wife Stacy have three sons. Joe (25), a 2012 UCM graduate who lives in Boulder, Colorado, Matt (23), who graduated from UCM in May 2013 and joined the Air Force is now startioned at Sheppard Air Force Base, Wichita Falls, Texas, and Nick (19), is a sophomore at the Air Force Academy. They also have two daughters, Hally (17), a junior at Warrensburg High School and Shilpa (16), a sophomore at WHS. Hally was a member of the 2013 and 2014 USA Gymnastics Junior National Trampoline & Tumbling Teams and is a former junior national trampoline champion.

Stacy is the head of the PE department at Warrensburg High School. A member of Central Missouri’s Athletic Hall of Fame, she was a two-time First Team All-American for the Jennies after transferring from the Air Force Academy, and capped off her two-year career by helping UCM to a runner-up national finish in 1987. She also played for the Kansas City Lightning in 1998.
