Automotive Industry

Automotive Industry experienced a positive growth during 2016. The overall automotive sales stood at 93 million in 2016, exhibiting a 4.65% growth

compared to the previous year. Though the major OEMs and suppliers managed to generate decent profits during 2016, 2017 is expected to witness serious

trouble unless some of the sub-sectors in the industry are consolidated. Stringent emission regulations and automotive standards across the globe are expected to

force the automakers to seek for better technologies. Advanced Driver Assistance Systems are now discovering their place in non-premium cars, owing to

higher demand from the customers. On the down side, a comparatively lower total shareholder return is expected to inhibit suppliers from reaping benefits.

High cost of raw materials (for the new technologies) is likely to pose a major threat to the automakers for better return on investment. Effective decisions

towards better technological adoptions and industry alliances would help the current manufacturers to sustain their existence.

Mordor offers intelligence across the following sectors

Automotive 2016

Case : An emerging automotive interior component manufacturer

was considering expanding into the developed markets.

Solution: Automotive interiors is one of those sectors in the

automotive industry, which purely depends upon demand-side

dynamics and end-user requirements. For providing an

effective action plan to the client, understanding the ‘Voice of

the Customer’ was of greatest importance. To cater to this

requirement, Team Mordor conducted polls and surveys with

a sample size of 600, which included inputs from car owners,

aftermarket service providers, distributors and manufacturers.

The gathered information included data regarding upholstery

preferences, connectivity, infotainment systems, ventilation &

comfort and choice of interior aesthetics. Finally, in order to

provide a head start to the client, our team provided a

tentative ‘Plan of Action’, which incorporated strategies like

entry into untapped markets and establishing new supplier.

Voice of the Customer

Result: The provided data was used in the client’s think-tank

presentation. The statistical forecasts, survey analytics and

preference analysis were used to support their decision

making.

Case: Japan-based investor/car rental operator wanted to understand the

feasibility of entering the ‘Europe Vehicle Rental Market’.

Solution: Upon multiple discussions with the client, the team devised a plan to

help capture the financial implications of the project. For this purpose, we

employed a dynamic financial modelling approach to evaluate financial

parameters, including internal rate of return, net present value and break even

point, as measures of ROI. Furthermore, Automotive team was successful in

answering the following questions:

1. Who are the major rental operators in the region?

2. What is the rental frequency and pricing?

3. What are the major hubs of operation?

4. What is the fleet forecast for the next five years?

5. How is the demand for self-drive cars at country level?

6. What are the frequently deployed strategies & developments in the sector?

Sensitivity Analysis was carried out to calibrate risk more effectively; changes at

a macro-level were modelled by considering multiple scenarios, which helped to

optimise the overall profitability.

Result: Having understood the existing competition in the market, hubs in

operation and the anticipated demand, our client was able to execute market

entry strategies with strong supportive metrics.

Case: A major construction machinery & equipment manufacturer wanted to know the performance of it’s sub-divisions to decide whether to sell or invest more

in the firm.

Solution: A major challenge for our analyst team was to determine the ‘optimal capital structure’ for the company. Apportioning costs between various SBUs of

the company was a major challenge, with the market being highly competitive for each service line of the company. Further, an understanding was imperative

regarding which divisions were driving the company’s growth trajectory and which should be divested in a 3-5 year timeline. Our Team supported a detailed

financial analysis and developed innovative business metrics for competitive benchmarking. Product half-life, technology adoption and price vs performance

were few of the key metrics employed in the study to analyse the current state of the company and devise a corresponding plan-of-action.

Result: The provided data assisted our client to understand their competitive advantage, identify existing bottle necks and fine tuning strategies to maintain the

Disruption Point

Case: A leading automotive parts die casting manufacturer wanted to understand the current market scenario and the anticipated growth.

Solution: The analytical approach for this case involved the identification of all

dependent variables influencing the market. These factors include technological

advancements, market drivers, constraints, opportunities, potential challenges and

value & supply chain analysis. An ‘impact analysis’ for each individual variable

was conducted and a subsequent plan was proposed to modulate the dependence

of these factors. We also provided the client with a list of ongoing and upcoming

supplier contracts (Kieretsu) in the global die casting industry. Further, country

level understanding of the volume requirements, industry competitiveness, the

ability to integrate with existing supply chain and comprehensive profiling of key

vendors were provided to keep the client up-to-date with the industry.
