OUR PHILOSOPHY
We believe that architecture can and should rise higher than the basic levels of providing shelter or
enclosing space. Excellent design and planning can convey symbolic meaning representing values,
goals, and principles esteemed important by project owners and users.
We approach architecture based on concept. Design concepts are created by weaving the
strands of familiar experience with fearless vision. We do this by balancing established values with
progressive ideals, and familiar representation with modern abstraction. This philosophy generates
an architectural tapestry that captures and celebrates the unique characteristics of each client.
MHTN Architects services include contextually based master plans, programs, and designs of a
variety of environments locally, regionally, and nationally. We believe high-level design and fiscal
responsibility to be naturally compatible. We believe in people and seek opportunities to expand
the boundaries of theory and technique. We crave challenging, aggressive, or complex projects
because they demand the utmost in creative solutions.

COLLEgE OF WESTERN IdAHO PROgRAM, dESIgN & MASTER PLANThe College of Western Idaho has strong need of a multipurpose facility on its Nampa
Campus to meet the needs of its rapidly expanding student enrollment. MHTN assisted
the College in defining the needs, prioritizing the components to be located in the
building, and determining the optimal location for the facility on the new campus.
The scope included: full programming for elements being considered for the new
building, including: student services (Registrar, Academic Advising & Counseling,
Assessment & Testing, and Career Center), student Life (student Government,
Leadership Development, student Resource Center, Clubs & Organizations, Lounge
space), Library, Retail food services, the College’s Culinary Arts program, bookstore,

UNIVERSITY OF UTAH HEALTH SCIENCE CAMPUS MASTER PLAN + MEdICAL EdUCATION BUILdINgAs part of the Master planning Team for the University of Utah (U of U) Health sciences Campus Master plan update, MHTN was asked to conceive concepts for the future
Medical Education and Discovery building (MED). The MED is envisioned as the centerpiece of the new master plan.
Rendered to the left, is a concept that imagines the MED’s highly collaborative internal groups housed in a series of distinguishable neighborhoods raised above a highly
transparent ground floor pavilion. The neighborhoods are lifted by a forest of expressive columns at the plaza level. Meeting spaces, flexible demonstration spaces, common
spaces, and readable vertical circulation would populate a vibrant, open ground floor plan. With sight lines between enclosed upper zones, the ground floor pavilion would be
a visible extension of the adjacent central plaza, the exterior heart of campus. Degrees of transparency are proposed via highly energy efficient exterior skin systems, such as
a double curtain wall, with the goal of enabling vistas from Utah’s Wasatch foothill campus.

UTAH STATE UNIVERSITY STUdENT CENTER FEASIBILITY STUdYWith goals of creating a vibrant focal point for student life and strengthening the campus fabric, Utah state University contracted with MHTN Architects to conduct a feasibility
study for the existing Taggart student Center.
In the years since its construction, the student center has been become an overcrowded facility that cannot meet the needs of the campus. MHTN worked collaboratively with
the project steering Committee to define the vision for the student center redesign.
Using benchmarking data and stakeholder input, MHTN determined preliminary space needs and projected costs, also developing cost projection tools to help UsU formulate
funding strategies.
The entire project team explored design concepts during an on-site workshop, evaluating which would best fulfill the established vision. Conceptual images will be used by
the campus for project fundraising.

UNIVERSITY OF UTAH HEALTH SCIENCE CAMPUS MASTER PLAN + BUILdINg 521 REPLACEMENT STUdYThe anticipated replacement of the existing University of Utah school of Medicine building provided an opportunity to examine and update the entire HsC campus master plan.
Working with a broad representation of University and Health sciences Center stakeholders, the planning consultants’ initial task was to articulate the vision that will guide future
HsC campus development. The creation of a iconic focal point and vibrant campus heart was a high stakeholder priority. This is fulfilled in the updated master plan by placement
in the campus center of: the Medical Education & Discovery building (MED), the replacement for and reinvention of the existing school of Medicine; the Knowledge Center, which
will promote interdisciplinary learning and collaboration among the three primary HsC missions of research, patient care and education; and an open plaza that will connect with
and strengthen campus pedestrian pathways. A new proposed circular road provides a mass transit pathway through the campus center, enhancing access as well as links with the
broader campus transportation infrastructure, another vision priority. Campus sustainability goals are supported by several master plan elements: replacement of older, carbon-
intensive buildings with those that are highly efficient, promotion of mass transit and bicycle use through an improved road and pathway system, and orientation of the new MED in
a east-west solar orientation.

WEBER STATE UNIVERSITY WILdCAT VILLAgEWeber state University wanted to shift the focus of their 400-acre Ogden campus from a commuter college to a university centered around traditional campus life. To address
this shift, MHTN designed a new residential precinct that immerses the student as an integral part of a 24-hour campus unique to Weber state University.
With Weber state’s 24-hour interactive goal in mind, MHTN organized the residential life buildings around a meaningful outdoor space that provides real opportunity for
“campus living.” This outdoor quad encourages time outside of the personal sleeping quarters to promote dynamic engagement and a sense of campus community between
traditional and non-traditional students.
Dynamic engagement also transcends into a primary commons, a cafe social hub, and the residence halls’ modern interior. Dining, meeting and study spaces are strategically
located and aesthetically designed to comfortably bring the community of students together 24/7.

BRIgHAM YOUNg UNIVERSITY OFFICE OF INFORMATION ANd TECHNOLOgY BUILdINgThe Office of Information Technology services building, is a new 80,000 sq. ft., three story building to house the campus IT personnel currently in other buildings, scattered
around campus. This effort will co-locate many of the University’s IT services and personnel into a building specifically designed for their needs. Although the building is
geographically separate from main campus, the MHTN Architects team was tasked with designing a facility that will be recognized as a byU building, with a distinctive design
that reflects the fact that it is the home of the IT services providers. byU challenged the design team to provide a solution that evoked a sense of simplicity and elegance,
while displaying the power of current technology and good design. The team was also encouraged to implement “Green/Eco friendly” building design methods. The building
exterior skin is primarily curtainwall glazing to provide light-filled, optimum views for all occupants. brick masonry veneer, matching the campus standard brick, and insulated
metal panels provide visual emphasis and connectivity to other byU campus buildings.

WEBER STATE UNIVERSITY SHEPHERd STUdENT UNIONCentered at the heart of the Weber state University campus, the shepherd student Union could not ask for a better location. Up until this renovation, the shepherd Union existed
in two separate buildings, connected only by an upper level corridor link. The new design stiches the two parts together by enclosing the entire exterior path between the two
building halves, and opening each side to a new active two-story atrium space with open bridges. Capturing the major north-south student traffic path of the campus, the atrium
space now affords open sightlines to two levels of lounge, retail, student activity, and meeting spaces, punctuated by a large information and photo ID center. Two large skylights
bathe the now unified space in natural light during the day and act as lanterns at night. previously isolated food service and has also moved front and center, composing a variety
of dining offerings and atmospheres which engage the new atrium or are connected by open sightlines.

BOISE STATE UNIVERSITY STUdENT UNION ExPANSIONserving 18,600 students and housing the residential student board dining services, the boise state University student Union building was unable to meet student and campus
needs in its size and configuration. With expected growth on campus, the student Union building was falling behind in its ability to service the student population and its many
programs and services. Retail food and bookstore services were also unable to meet campus needs.
MHTN Architects completed the facility program and concept design for the remodel and expansion project looking at an addition of approximately 60,000 square feet to be
combined with major remodeling of selected spaces within the student Union building.

IdAHO STATE UNIVERSITY RENdEZVOUS CENTERThe Rendezvous building is a microcosm of campus life, combining academic, housing, and student union functions. Redefining the campus experience, students have
opportunities for living, learning, and recreating within the walls of this complex. Located at the center of the hourglass-shaped IsU campus, Rendezvous is the campus heart
and hub that unifies the north and south portions of the campus.
A major design challenge included forming a suitable architectural image for this new campus focal point, one that innovates and moves the campus forward, while
acknowledging and respecting surrounding campus structures.
The building is organized around major relationships with its immediate north and south neighbors. Academic functions are located in a three-story structure on the north side,
directly across from the Library and other academic buildings. The south side is comprised of a four-story housing component, reinforcing the presence of a housing precinct
on the south side of the campus. The central east-west atrium contains primarily student union functions and has been characterized as an internal campus main street. As
such, the student union space becomes the connective tissue that binds the academic experience with the residence hall experience. With visual connections to Cadet field
to the east, and the main academic quad to the west, the atrium space serves as a beacon to all areas of the campus.

MINNESOTA STATE UNIVERSITY - CENTENNIAL STUdENT UNION RENOVATIONThe Centennial student Union (CsU), at the University of Minnesota, Mankato suffered from an inadequate entry and undistinguished appearance on its public face. The CsU also
struggled to find a strategy to activate the food service venues, lounge, and administration spaces.
Today the CsU links the exterior of the campus to the interior quad by way of an inviting environment and very transparent design. To activate the space, three, large-scale holes
were cut through the main level floor to enhance sightlines to the previously underutilized lower level. Today students can see activity between the main and lower level lounge
areas. Local Mankato limestone gives regional texture to the facility and is utilized on an over-scaled, fireplace hearth wall, which is the figurative new campus living room. Old
Terrazzo flooring was replaced in select areas with new terrazzo in high color and contrasting patterns, giving visual energy and scale to the very open plan.
In the low light, long winter climate of Minnesota, south facing glass curtainwall, a long roof overhang, and west vertical stone fin allows desired natural light into the interior, and
through to the center of the building.

UNIVERSITY OF UTAH EMERgENCY dEPARTMENTThe University of Utah requested a proposal for creating construction documents for the Emergency Department Remodel based on preliminary floor plans provided by the
hospital. During the interview process, MHTN illustrated the possibility of obtaining an additional patient care room within the proposed remodel scope of work. Upon being
hired for the project design, the MHTN team in conjunction with the users reduced the overall footprint of the remodel while exceeding the initial program requirements.
phasing for the project was reduced from an anticipated six phases of construction to two, and costs were consistently held on target. Through diligent planning, the uses
of rooms were able to be upgraded in two instances: resuscitation rooms were sized correctly to be licensed as trauma rooms, and results rooms were able to be licensed as
fast track rooms.
In this instance, MHTN was able to expand and enhance the original program while meeting the established budget and simplifying construction phasing.

RIO TINTO REgIONAL CENTER REMOdEL & NEW INTERIORThe Rio Tinto Regional Center (RTRC) at Daybreak was completed and initially occupied in October 2008. Its 120,000 sf, two level, interior workplace was designed by a national
Interior Design Consultant to manifest Rio Tinto’s New Global Workplace standard. After living in the space for less than two years, this client discovered several fundamental
aspects of the environment that needed to be changed, not only for functionality, but to instill brand identity and workplace pride in the environment itself.
MHTN lead the management group, and its executives, through a design process that would respect the sophisticated spirit of the original design, but address objectives to provide
a modern, efficient, and high-quality work environment for between 500- 600 Rio Tinto employees and contractors in salt Lake City. Initial occupancy was approximately 550, and
included employees and consultants from 13 different business units and functions previously located in four separate locations in the greater salt Lake City area.

SPECTRUM ENgINEERS CORPORATE OFFICEThe new offices for spectrum Engineers were based on the idea of using the space as a showcase of who the company is and what they do. sustainable concepts were
incorporated into the project as an example of spectrum’s focus on sustainability. Among the major focuses was reducing and monitoring energy use within the space, providing
individualized thermal comfort, and addressing acoustics in the open office environment. The result is a space that demonstrates the services offered by the company and creates
a comfortable working environment for the employees while monitoring the reduced environmental impacts of a high performance space.

MERIT MEdICAL CORPORATE CAMPUS + PARkINg STRUCTUREfor over 20 years, MHTN Architects has worked with Merit Medical systems in developing and expanding their south Jordan corporate campus. The campus includes multiple
buildings with a variety of departments including administration offices, laboratory, clean room/manufacturing, distribution + warehousing and technology/research.
The parking terrace is distinguished by its stair towers and gently curving roof forms. It provides 720 parking spaces and upholds an open-concept space plan for easy in-and-out
maneuvering. staff and visitors are well-oriented and escorted to walkways for a safe and seamless transition into the corporate campus.
To handle Utah’s corrosive winter environment, the parking terrace was designed with microsilica fume concrete. Interior handrails and guardrails are fabricated from stainless steel
to reduce maintenance. for energy efficiency, interior lighting is controlled by motion sensors that are programmed to track cars and people so that lighting is only turned on when
it’s needed. In addition, the terrace was designed to expand an additional floor vertically to provide for the client’s growing needs.

MERIT MEdICAL CORPORATE CAMPUS + MANUFACTURINg BUILdINgMHTN Architects has worked with Merit Medical systems for over 20 years developing and expanding its south Jordan corporate campus. The campus encompasses multiple
buildings with a variety of departments including administration offices, laboratory, clean room/manufacturing, distribution + warehousing and technology/research.
Merit Medical specializes in the production of medical products that are used in cardiac surgery. because of the sensitive nature of the role these products play, all manufacturing,
in it’s many differing phases, is done in clean-room environments that use up to a Class-100 rating. All finish materials in production areas must be durable, light-reflective and
easily cleanable. Clean rooms must be accessible from above to enable changes in equipment infrastructure support that are needed as manufacturing equipment evolves over
time. Despite the fact that the production building uses a significant amount of process energy, it is currently pending a LEED-silver Certification.

AUBURN UNIVERSITY STUdENT CENTERAs a replacement for the existing foy student Union building, the new student Center at Auburn University will contain ballroom and meeting room space, food service, retail,
lounge space, and administrative and student organization office space.
MHTN has completed program verification and developed a mission statement for the project through the process of user input and consensus building. program correlations and
groupings were also developed with a strong emphasis on determining the appropriate mix of uses for different portions of the building. MHTN is currently completing the design.
The primary objective of the student Center is to create both a figurative and literal “heart” to the Auburn University campus, providing a focal point that addresses the desire to give
students a place to gather and interact which ties seamlessly into the fabric of the greater campus whole. This is to be achieved by creating a pedestrian oriented building which is
carefully linked to the adjacent precincts that exist around the site. The residential buildings near the student Center address a specific desire to provide a highly synergistic program
that brings a diverse population together. This will ultimately provide the students of Auburn University with a unique place in which to live, learn and socialize.

SALT PALACE CONVENTION CENTER ExPANSION II & IIIbecause of increasing demand for convention space in salt Lake City, salt Lake County recognized the need to expand the existing salt palace Convention Center by nearly
200,000 square feet. This included an expansion of the ballroom and exhibit hall spaces and a new pre-function area that would allow greater flexibility in the use of the
building. User access to the original salt palace Convention Center was limited. part of the program challenge was to provide a visitor drop-off and pick-up area that would
function for the entire facility and provide a “second front door” to the building.

APACHE JUNCTION CITY HALL & JUSTICE COURTSstarting in 2003, MHTN Architects was retained by the City of Apache Junction, Arizona to complete programming and design of a 43,000 square foot city government center. In
conjunction with DfDG Architects of phoenix, Arizona, we are also to oversee the construction of this key city project. Included in the facility are two Magistrate (Justice) Courts,
council chambers, and complete city administrative services. Located on a pristine desert site adjacent to the central city police facility, this project was charged with the goal of
defining the architectural image of this fast-growing phoenix suburb. The project form and massing borrows from the scenic backdrop of the superstition Mountains just east of
the site, while relating to both its desert context and the adjoining police and library buildings. With careful consideration being given to environment and overall site context, this
project is being developed following sustainable (green) building parameters and requirements to achieve LEED certification.

UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA STUdENT UNION MEMORIAL CENTERThe student Union Memorial Center creates a hub for student activity and is rooted in the unique and beautiful context that is The University of Arizona campus. Responding to a
spectacular site at the campus’ core, a careful architectural response weaves a diverse campus context into a solution based in indigenous southwestern architecture and design.
Each exterior façade is a direct reference (in scale, in materials, and in cadance) to its immediately adjacent architectural neighbors. Major interior spaces (in form, materials, and
character) are driven by desert vernacular architecture.
A major north-south open-air walkway, directly on axis with Mountain Avenue creates a welcoming new entrance image from the Main Mall on the south and from the greater Tucson
area on the north. This walkway opens a vista for arriving visitors to the Main Mall and creates a riparian microclimate similar in character to an Arizona slot canyon.
Another major walkway parallels the Main Mall and connects the Administration building plaza on the east with the Old Main plaza n the west. At the intersection of these two
pathways lies the heart of the student Union and bookstore Complex – a four story, open-air canyon, full of indigenous plant material and the sounds of moving water. This space,
nicknamed The Canyon, unites all levels of the student Union and bookstore with stairs, elevators, pedestrian bridges and lounges.

buildings are designed to maintain the overall design context of the entire campus. Walking pathways connect the buildings and the riverfront park along the entire campus. The
structural system for the buildings is steel structure with curtain wall construction of glass and exterior finish systems. program requirements were developed to meet the specific
requirements of the Owner/Developer in attracting a specific, high end, office tenant clientele. The buildings were designed with the tenant in mind. Tenant productivity, interaction
and information sharing were facilitated in this design. Window mullion spacings are design to optimize office and conference room size capability. floor loading is 100psf. The
buildings incorporated principles of sustainability to lower energy consumption but did not seek a LEED certification. The mechanical systems are efficient gas fired VAV with air
cooled chillers. Automated control systems operate the equipment at optimum efficiency levels for tenant needs.
