The r:astcrn Female IIigh School is located on the southeast corner of Orleans and Ai>qui th Streets , Dal timore, Hary land .
, The F.astern Female High School, built in 1869-1870 , is typical of the Italian Villa mode of late nineteenth-century architecture, as evidenced by its square plan , towers, and bracketing. In the facade, interest is achieved through the vertical lines of the towers, nurrow windows and porch columns, broken by th e horizontal lines of the stone foundation , the balustrade, the belt courses a nd the prominent cornice. The most noticeable feature of the brick, western facade is the wooden loggia which stretches between the towers . Other details which heighten the interest are the triple central window, the pediment above it, and the bri ck dripstones punctuated by white keystones at the street level .
The west facade is symmetrical , consisting of two corner towers which contain two bays of two windows c.:ich nn<l <l
narrower centra l bay . All lower roof eaves are decorated by a deep cci~nice supported by elaborate double brackets except over the central bay where the cornice is broken briefly by a classical pediment . The tower~, higher than the rest of the building , are capped with flat, pyramidal roofs .
There are two large .flat arches on the loggia at the two end bays which are supported by square columns . A projecting arch l ocatea jn the central bay is supportc<l by double columns . The entire l Gng th of tlle loggia has a balustrade of white wood .
All of the windows are flat-arched except fo r a triad of round- arched windows on the second story of the central bay , one large -central window and two narrower flanking ones . The triad has an "eyebrow" of white stone .
The north and south elevations of the Eas tern Femal e High School arc low- key variations o f tlie WC:!stern faca<l L! , without porches, _and with only one tower on the south .

The Eastern Femal e High School , founded in 1844, was one of the pioneer public high schools in the country devoted to secondary education for women . Of the two female high schools established by the Baltimore City Council in 1844 the ~astern Fcmu.lc TliCJh Scl1ool is the only one extant.
The 1870 t s saw the formation of a teachers ' association at the Eastern Female High School which was the forerunner of the Public School Teachers' Association, stil l in exis tence ·(1971).
In 1851 the first school·building was demolished . Colonel R. Snowden Andrews (1830-1903) , a charter rneMber of the Baltimore chapt0r of the l\rncrican Institute of Architects, was selecteti to design a new b~ilding for the Eastern Female High School . Begun in 1869 the building was dedicated in September of 1870 . The cost of raising the first school in 1851 and erecting the new one eighteen years later was $97,805 , a savings of $2 ,194 of the amount appropriated. The 1869 school could accomodate six hundred pupils; it contained the latest heating and ventilating systems.
/\rr.onq the prominent graduates of the Eastern Fer.ial e IIigh School wc.:re Lizette Woodworth Heese (1872) , a poet , c:i.nd Hrs . William Buttner {1904), one of the founders of the Campfire Girls.
From its founding the Eastern FemaleBigh School was noted for its innovative program which prepared girls for college or teachers ' school , or through a senior business course , for a vocation . The facilities included an art gallery. and library.
I n 1907 the high school moved to larg~r quarters . then a gra~roar sc~ool has occupied the 1869 building.
Since
In January of 1971 the Mayor and City Council of Baltimore designated the Eastern Female High School an official Baltimore City Landmark . · It is on the t1aryland Register .

Th P. Eastern Female High School was one of the first high schools in the country to be built for tlie purpose of g iving a comprehensive education to girls. Having been established in 1844 at another location, the new building was located at the corne r of Aisquith and Orleans Streets . It was completed in 1870 and opened with an enrollment of 350 pupils. The total cost •. of the enection of the new school was $97, 805. 70.
The architect was R. Snowden Andrews, a prominent Bal ti more a rchitect of the Victorian era. Architectural ly, the building is of the Italian Vill a/Mannerist style. It is built of red brick with stone and white wood trim . One outstanding feature is the e laborate bracketi ng of the three towers at the roofline. The main section, which is recessed between two of the towers, has a wooden porch extending across the front.
This building is a fine example of the sty le of architecture favored at the time of The Civil War.
