Supply Chain Metrics That Matter: The Importance in a Market-Driven World

SUNDAY: 12:30 PM - 1:30 PM

Supply chain management is thirty years old, but it is still evolving. Nine out of ten companies are stuck and unable to make progress at the intersection of operating margin and inventory turns. In this keynote, Lora Cecere will discuss how leading firms are achieving supply chain excellence in a market-driven world, what metrics matter and why as she details how to accelerate improvements at your company. About Lora Celebrating the launch of her company Supply Chain Insights in February 2012, Lora Cecere, Founder and CEO, continues to help supply chain professionals with thought-leading supply chain research. Her prior work experience includes 30 years of diverse supply chain experience. This includes nine years as an industry analyst with Gartner Group, AMR Research, and Altimeter Group, 15 years as a leader in the building of supply chain software at Manugistics and Descartes Systems Group, and several years as a supply chain practitioner at Procter & Gamble, Kraft/General Foods, Clorox, and Dreyer’s Grand Ice Cream (now a division of Nestlé).

The emergence of disruptive technologies and the potential for more rapid deployment of existing, proven technologies all hold the potential to change development models and create new markets and business opportunities for entrepreneurs and those who finance them. Supply Chain Innovation: Flexibility & Risk Mitigation Strategies

SUNDAY: 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Supply chain risks are difficult to predict, quantify and manage. This session will discuss a risk exposure model that assesses the impact of a disruption originating anywhere in a supply chain allowing companies to make more informed decisions about where to focus their risk management resources. He will discuss how Ford Motor Company applied this model to identify previously unrecognized risk exposures and develop mitigation strategies, track changes in risk exposure and respond to a disruption. About David David Simchi-Levi is a professor of Engineering Systems at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His research focuses on developing and implementing robust and efficient techniques for manufacturing and supply chains. He has been published in professional journals on both practical and theoretical aspects of supply chain management. Transformation: From Supply Chains to Value Networks

SUNDAY: 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Business models are transforming. The rate of change in technology and its application are increasing at a pace which makes the question of “how to stay in business” a very real consideration for almost everyone. The concept of a long-lived supply chain no longer fits the reality of an adaptive value network that will adjust quickly to changing end customer needs and expectations. Learn how successful businesses are understanding these changes and are transforming to survive and even thrive on the change.About PatrickPatrick Murzyn is the Global Purchasing Director for Caterpillar Inc. Design to Grow: How Coca-Cola Learned to Combine Scale and Agility (and How You Can Too)

MONDAY: 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM

In today’s world, every company is at risk of having a “Kodak Moment”-watching its industry and the competitive advantages it has developed over years, even decades, vanish overnight. The reason? An inability to adapt quickly to new business realities. Tomorrow’s business winners-regardless of size or industry-will be the ones that know how to combine scale with agility. In this talk, David shares both the successes and failures of one of the world’s largest companies as it learns to use design to be both agile and big. He shares case studies to show how this works at Coca-Cola and how other companies can use the same approach to grow their business. About David David Butler is a designer, entrepreneur, educator, and leader on a mission to make it easier for starters to scale and scalers to start. His new book Design to Grow: How Coca-Cola Learned to Combine Scale and Agility (and How You Can Too), co-authored with Linda Tischler, explores the relationship between design, startup culture, and corporate growth. It is the first book written by a current employee at Coca-Cola.

Economic Outlook for Material Handling, Logistics and the Supply Chain Industries

Why Dirty Jobs Matter

Transforming Your Supply Chain

MONDAY: 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM

TUESDAY: 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM

TUESDAY: 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM

What challenges and opportunities does the U.S. and global economic outlook pose for your company? Join top-ranked economist, Jason Schenker, who will share his short-term and long-term economic forecasts. This presentation will cover the growth outlook, as well as the outlook for interest rates, foreign exchange rates, energy prices, and industrial metals prices. About Jason Jason Schenker is the President and Chief Economist of the financial market research and consulting firm, Prestige Economics, LLC. Mr. Schenker writes market commentary, produces forecasts, and manages Prestige Economics consulting projects. He is the author of the book Commodity Prices 101 and guest hosts the Bloomberg Television show “Street Smart.”

In this talk, Mike Rowe gives an illuminating account of the true nature of skilled labor, and why it’s being devalued by the media, advertising, and even the government. Why are people who do dirty jobs some of the happiest people you’ll ever meet? What lessons can we learn about teamwork, determination, efficiency and our definition of success? With conviction, humor and deep humanity, Mike Rowe reminds us of the enormous but forgotten benefits of hard, honest work and how it affects everything from our national identity to our infrastructure to the economy. About Mike Mike Rowe is a TV host, writer, narrator, producer, actor and spokesman. His performing career began in 1984, when he faked his way into the Baltimore Opera to get his union card and meet girls, both of which he accomplished during a performance of Rigoletto. His transition to television occurred in 1990 when - to settle a bet - he auditioned for the QVC Shopping Channel and was promptly hired. Thanks to QVC, Mike became practiced at the art of talking for long periods without saying anything of substance, a skill that would serve him well as a TV host. Then, through a horrible miscalculation, he pitched a three-hour special to the Discovery Channel that ended up resulting in the show Dirty Jobs. Viewers liked it and Discovery responded by ordering 39 episodes - a shocking commitment that Mike was contractually obligated to honor. For the first time in his career, Mike went to work with a vengeance.

This session will describe a proven process for transforming your supply chain. The material is based on Paul’s book, Supply Chain Transformation. Discover how a simple nine-step process can help you develop a breakthrough supply chain strategy for your firm. This approach has been tested and used successfully by leading manufacturers and retailers. Learn how to start with your customers, assess your internal capabilities, evaluate your competitors and identify the new capabilities that will transform your supply chain.About Paul Paul Dittmann is Executive Director of The Global Supply Chain Institute at the University of Tennessee. In addition, he teaches supply chain courses in the business school, and lectures in the executive education programs.

Dr. Dittmann comes to the University of Tennessee after a thirty two year career in industry. He has held positions, such as Vice President, Logistics for North America, Vice President Global Logistics Systems, and most recently served as Vice President, Supply Chain Strategy, Projects, and Systems for the Whirlpool Corporation.
