Course Description:

 This course is an introduction to the managerial process andthe functioning of business. It integrates findings of thebehavioral sciences with classical, quantitative systems, andother approaches to business. New this term students willfind a complete listing of all textbook homeworkassignments in the syllabus addendum.

It has been said that if you give a man a fish you can feedhim for a day – teach a man to fish and you will feed him fora lifetime. The authors of this course’s textbook would takeit one step further in suggesting: “Teach a person to start afish farm and you will feed a community for a lifetime.”(Nickels, McHugh & McHugh) 

 This course allows the learner to appreciate the world of business as it touches all facets of our daily lives, in many

ways, in many places, on a global scale. The concepts of management, business administration, and the creation of entrepreneurship are the vehicles by which learners will gainan understanding of how the world of business works, andhow it impacts our communities here in the 21st century.

Course Prerequisites: WRI 1100 or an equivalent

Themes Application:

Communication skills – Students develop the ability in thesecourses to explain, understand and criticize information andopinion. Included are the mastery of written and verbaldiscourse, an appreciation of group dynamics, anunderstanding of the mass media, and the impact of the

latest electronic information technology in relation tobusiness management in the US and on a global scale.

Global Systems – Students’ understanding of that which

holds the global business community together is developedthrough the study of the interaction of politics, economic,management, science, and culture across national bordersas well as across the confines of traditional fields of study.

World Cultures – Students’ understanding of cultural valuesand lifestyles of people throughout the world and its impacton global business issues and trends is fostered; both as ameans of interpreting diverse approaches to life and forunderstanding the student’s own customs and choices.

Student Learning Outcomes and Assessment:

Students will accomplish the learning outcomes through aprocess of problem solving, applied learning, and use of critical thinking. Assessment of learning outcomes will beaccomplished through objective exams, written assignments,discussion forums, and a course research project. At the end

of this course students will be able to:

1) Understand the basic concepts associated with thecontemporary business environment including basicconcepts relating to the U.S. economic system, thehistory of business in the U.S., and business in a globalcontext. This will be evaluated through exams, writtenassignments, and weekly discussion forums.

2) Define the various forms of business and recognize theimpact of entrepreneurship and small business on theU.S. economy. This will be evaluated through exams,written assignments and weekly discussion forums.

3) Understand the basic function of management,organizational structure, and the role of technology inproduction processes. This will be evaluated through

exams, written assignments, and weekly discussionforums

4) Demonstrate a beginning knowledge of motivationaltheories and principles, the functions of human

resource management, and key labor/managementissues. This will be evaluated through exams, andweekly discussion forums, and written assignments.

5) Demonstrate an understanding of the fundamentaltechniques relating to the development of marketingstrategies, specifically: product, price, place, andpromotion. This will be evaluated through exams,written assignments and weekly discussion forums.

6) Gain an introductory understanding of how informationsystems, communication technology and

accounting/financial analysis contribute as evaluationand control devices to the overall managementprocess. This will be evaluated through exams, writtenassignments, weekly discussion forums, and a courseresearch project.

7) Understand the basic concepts relating to money andbanking, the role of financial institutions, the impact of sound securities and investment management, and theoptions associated with risk management. This will be

evaluated through exams, and written assignments.8) In addition to the coursework objectives stated, the

students’ ability to effectively communicate and work inan online environment will be enhanced asdemonstrated through ongoing weekly discussionforums, and weekly student assessments.

9) To demonstrate applied learning and use of criticalthinking skills students will be evaluated by assessmentof a course research project.

Methods of Course Instruction:

 The class will be organized around online asynchronousdiscussion, weekly written assignments, exams, and acourse research project which utilize problem-based learningtheory, applied learning, and critical thinking. Students are

Discussion Forums: Practicing Management DecisionsQuestions: Students are to answer assigned discussionquestions either provided by the Faculty member orassigned from the textbook. These discussion questions willbe posted in weekly discussion forums on your blackboardweb site. Ten graded weeks of discussion forum activitiesthis term are worth 500 total points. 

Grading Criteria for Discussion Questions

Class participation through discussion is an integral part of this online course, although it istypically less formal than other work submitted throughout the course. Participation is defined asactive engagement in a discussion or other online activity.

To provide a structure for balanced participation and allow you to maximize the benefit of thediscussion boards, it is recommended that you follow these guidelines: 

1)  Post your responses to discussion questions in the first three days of the school week(Monday through Wednesday).

2)  Post two or more thoughtful and topic-relevant comments to responses made byclassmates during the last four days of the school week (Thursday through Sunday).

3)  Respond to any questions that your instructor or peers have regarding your original postby the end of the school week.

Material for the exams is extracted from the coursetextbook. Each exam is worth a maximum of 100points. Instructions will be given shortly through anannouncement about the procedure for taking theexams through your web site.

 

Course Project: Students will create a course project wortha maximum of 200 points that contains a term paper andsummary PowerPoint presentation:

•  The Course Project description and drop box will befound in the Learning Module section. The project willconsist of a fifteen page research paper on a companyor organization of interest to the student and a fiveslide PowerPoint presentation that summarizes theresearch paper

Assignment format and submission specifics for theproject will include:

• Research paper, fifteen pages in length, APA orMLA format. Use of at least ten references not toinclude the course textbook.

• PowerPoint slides of at least five, but not to

exceed ten slides that summarize the content of the research paper.• The research paper and the presentation must be submitted for grading

during the final week of the course. The presentation must be posted tothe course project assignment drop box as an attachment. The research

 paper must be submitted to the assignment folder drop box also as an

attachment.

Faculty and Student Expectations for the Course:

Students are expected to participate on a regular basis (seeattendance/participation policy); in addition, they are to letthe faculty member know of any extenuating circumstancesthat arise that would affect their attendance andparticipation in the course. Also, students are expected toexhibit a collegial and congenial tone while interacting onlinewith faculty and other class members.

 The faculty member is expected to provide feedback andgrading of assignments in a timely manner. In general,

Emails will be returned within a 24-hour period. Anyexceptions will be noted to students. Faculty is alsoexpected to be available online to answer questions relatedto course content and schedule. Finally, the faculty isexpected to facilitate the course in a manner consistent withcompetent online educational standards of practice.

Online Course Policies:

Attendance and Discussion Participation: Students will beconsidered in attendance when they post to the weeklydiscussion forum, submit a homework written assignment orcomplete an online exam. Students who fail to meet thisminimum requirement will be considered absent from class.Excessive absenteeism will negatively impact course grade

and/or enrollment in the course as described by StudentHandbook policy.

 The faculty member has the discretion to determine the

appropriateness and relevance of student responses andoverall attendance/participation grade. The faculty memberwill use the attached rubric for grading purposes.

Make up work may be allowed at the discretion of the facultymember. In general, no extra credit work is available for thiscourse.

Academic Honesty Policies:

Online Programs In addition to the on-campus student conduct policy,students enrolled in online program are expected todemonstrate the same tolerance, respect, andunderstanding that would prevail in any campus situation. Allonline users are expected to support the same respect forindividuals, commitment to issue and problem resolution,and open communication and feedback as in the face-to-face

environment.

Users who are in violation of the terms listed above aresubject to the following sanctions:

• Student may be placed on disciplinary probation.

• Student may be suspended from a class in which thestudent disrupted the learning environment.

•  The student's user account, by which the student mayaccess the virtual classroom, may be terminated

•  The student may be terminated from the HPU OnlineCampus.

Academic Dishonesty: The definition of academic dishonestyincludes:

Cheating

•  The intentional use of or attempted use of unauthorizedassistance, materials, information, and/or study aids inany academic exercise.

•  The act of collaborating and working together on anyacademic exercise (without the approval of the

• Examples of cheating include but are not limited to:

Plagiarism

•  The deliberate use or reproduction of ideas, words, orstatements of another as one’s own without properacknowledgement or citation.

• Examples of plagiarism include but are not limited to:using verbatim or paraphrased text without propercitation; submitting, without permission, the samewritten or oral material in more than one course;obtaining research or lab data from another individualor source but presenting it as one’s own; paraphrasingso as to mislead the reader regarding the source.

Facilitating Academic Dishonesty

• Intentionally or knowingly helping or attempting to help

another to commit an act or acts of academicdishonesty as defined in this policy.

Fabrication

•  The intentional and unauthorized falsifying or inventingof any information or citation in an academic exerciseor University document.

• Examples of fabrication include but are not limited to:falsifying data or signatures on an official University

document (e.g., registration form, college record, ortranscript); misrepresenting a fact in order to obtain acourse exemption, waiver, or withdrawal.

Procedures for Dishonesty Cases

• Suspected cases of academic dishonesty will be dealtwith by the instructor or instructors concerned with oneor more of the penalties listed.

• In each such instance, the instructor shall send a reportof the incident (Academic Dishonesty Report Form) andthe penalty imposed to the Vice President for AcademicAdministration through the appropriate college/school

Dean.

Penalties: Instructors may elect to assess one of thefollowing penalties:

• Require the student to redo the academic exercise ordo a new academic exercise.

• Give the student an “F” for the academic exercise andpermit it to be redone.

• Give the student an “F” for the course.

Remand the case to the appropriate dean fordisposition. That dean may impose one of the foregoingpenalties or remand the case to the Vice President forAcademic Administration. If the case is remanded tothe Vice President for Academic Administration fordisposition, that official may impose one of theforegoing penalties or remand the case to theAcademic Affairs Conduct Review Board. The AcademicAffairs Conduct Review Board can recommend any of the appropriate academic sanctions listed on pages 48-

49 of the HPU Student Handbook. The Vice President forAcademic Administration must approve the board’srecommendations for them to be actuated.

Rights and Privileges

• Instructors may request that the Vice President for

Academic Administration dispose of the case or refer itto the Academic Affairs Conduct Review Board.

•  The Vice President for Academic Administration maytake the case for his or her own disposition, or refer itto the Academic Affairs Conduct Review Board.

•  The Academic Affairs Conduct Review Board proceduresare described on page 49 of the Hawai’i Pacific
