This type of learning is an important part of developing a passion for leadership and of strengthening leadership skills. We should all be proud that Marygrove’s strong commitment to service and to urban leadership has attracted important resources to strengthen our service learning capacity. Also in February, we received another grant of $50,000 from the Kemper Foundation, a non-profit organization well-known for its support of innovative liberal arts college programs. With these resources, Marygrove College has a wonderful opportunity to enhance service learning experiences for our students and to support faculty development in ways that sustain our ability to continue such experiences well into the future. The resources from Michigan Campus Compact and the Kemper Foundation provide valuable support for staffing, as well as faculty and student stipends to develop and participate in service learning activities. Additional information about how you can participate in these programs will be forthcoming from program organizers. Speaking of Marygrove An Urban Opportunity: Compassion and Commitment Wanted On Saturday, March 29 over 1,000 people will gather in some of Detroit’s neediest areas for Detroit Partnership Day. Volunteers will clean vacant lots, create and paint a mural, remove or mask graffiti, paint school lockers, create peace gardens, wash windows, polish floors and restore play areas at 30 sites throughout the city. What a great opportunity to demonstrate urban leadership in the area of civic pride. This is a campus-wide invitation to students, staff, faculty and family members. Confirm your participation! Answer the call to do our part in improving the quality of life in impoverished areas. This is an Urban Agenda and our commitment will display the depths of our compassion. The day’s activities are co-sponsored by the University of Michigan and 25 other Detroit organizations. First up on Thursday at 7:30 p.m., the Institute for Detroit Studies presents a “Defining Detroit” lecture featuring Dr. June Manning Thomas, professor of urban and regional planning, University of Michigan. Title of the lecture: “Development, Planning and Race in Detroit: Past Struggles, Future Challenges.” Dr. Thomas is the author of Redevelopment and Race: Planning a Finer City in Postwar Detroit. Next, the Annual Marygrove College Academic Symposium will be held on Thursday, March 27 and Friday, March 28. The theme of the symposium is “Responding to the Urban Crisis.” Events will begin on Thursday afternoon. This year’s luncheon speaker is Rev. Kevin Turman, senior pastor of the Second Baptist Church of Detroit and president of Metropolitan Organizing Strategy Enabling Strength (MOSES). His address is titled, “Renewing Detroit: Spiritual Re- vival in a Secular Context.” The luncheon will take place on Friday at 12:00 p.m., Madame Cadillac, Main Dining Room. Two upcoming events will examine key issues facing the city of Detroit and other major urban areas across the United States. faculty members Donald Levin and Anthony McGlaun, will
