MGCP FIESTA… FAST APPROACHING! April 26 is just around the corner. But before that day, it’s good

for us to know how our patron saint came about, the story be-hind the image. Read on…

The image of the Madonna, bending her head close to the cheek of the child and with the right arm of the Child clinging to His

Mother’s neck, is the beautiful image of our “MOTHER OF GOOD COUNSEL.”.

The original and miraculous picture of our “Mother of Good

Counsel” is enshrined in an Augustinian Church located in the

small town of Genezzano, about thirty miles southeast of Rome, Italy.

The church was built by the Augustinians with the special aid of

a very devoted widow, now Blessed Petruccia. For lack of re-sources, the construction of the church was interrupted. Howev-

er, the unfinished and roofless church was meant to be complet-ed with the help of Mother Mary. And so, unexpectedly and miraculously, on April 25, 1467, a beau-

tiful image was discovered on a wall of the church “without human intervention.” This appearance

was taken to be a token of divine favor and soon, this image came to be known by the title “The Mother of Good Counsel.”

This miraculous event of 1467 has since spread far and wide and has become the center of continu-ous pilgrimage. Soon after, the church was completed and Blessed Petruccia even lived to see the

completion of the church.

Five hundred years hence, the devotion of our “Mother of Good Counsel” has flourished and grown throughout the world. The numerous cures recorded as having occurred since then have caused the

Madonna to be called miraculous.

Her little “Mother of Good Counsel” has two meanings: “Good” referring to Mary’s goodness and

her big role in the realization of God’s plan for humanity; and “Counsel” referring to her words in the Gospel during the wedding at Cana – “Do whatever he tells you” This “Counsel” is addressed not

only to those servants in the wedding at Cana, but to all of us who wish to find God’s mercy in our

lives.

Indeed, “Mother of Good Counsel” is a beautiful title, full of hope, something that can inspire and guide us through these confused times.

We celebrate her feast day every twenty – sixth of April.

A HUGE WELCOME! It is with great joy that we present to you our very first issue of our parish bulletin/newsletter! It is our hope that

this will become an important part of our spiritual life, a source of valuable information about activities that will feed our

souls. MGCP Bulletin will provide you with updated reports of the various activities happening and about to happen in our

parish.

The Editorial team, as part of the parish social communication ministry, desires to create a publication that will

serve the parishioners’ needs and at the same time be able to apply their respective skills in modern technology. Thus,

while serving, we discover, through research, novel ways of communicating and disseminating information that will be

effective in our parish and chapels.

Since communication is a two-way process, we welcome your thoughts, ideas, comments and suggestions. We

also encourage you to submit any material/information that you may want to be included in our subsequent issues. Of

course, they will be subjected to our editing and our parish priest and leaders’ approval. Furthermore, since we will be

giving it away for free, we welcome advertising offers and donations for us to be able to continue this good cause.

You don’t even have to stop at being a reader only. If you have the experience and know-how, you may want to

join us and be part of our ministry. Some of you with excellent writing skills may also contribute and be one of our au-

thors, others who are good at photography may submit your parish photos to us and the like. In short, this publication

should not be just our team’s effort, it is by all of us in the parish. This is yours as well…

SHEPHERD’S CORNER

It is About Humility

“The Child continued to grow and become strong, increasing in wisdom; and the grace of God was upon Him” (Luke 2:40). All throughout his life, Jesus preached the good news. Some came to believe & witness about him, yet some were hostile to His words & teachings, that others even “picked up stones to throw at Him” (John 8:59). Finally, He was nailed to a cross - not that there was no way out for Him, or that God is hungry for blood, on the contrary, Jesus “being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Him-self by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross” (Phil 2:8).

Humility is an attitude whereby one sets his/her being beneath the grounds of worldly norms for glory. It is being unpretentious, or plain & simple “pigs know they are not ea-gles.” Humans know they are not gods, only servants with responsibilities to make. Saint Augustine says: “It was pride that changed angels into devils; it is humility that makes men as angels.”

Lenten season is a period when a true Christian is led to discover his/her identity to Christ. The Redeemer, Christ through His cross, opened a new way of being & inaugurated the kingdom of God through His great humility. This kingdom is nowhere else but in every heart of the humble person. Humility fuels one to accept that in the context of following Christ, suffering is a celebration of life – a life of glorifying God.

This period is a great test of our being. Humility is not about delighting in misery, but a way of life & a celebration of our life with the risen Lord. The living Lord who commands us "All power in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Go, make disciples of all nations…teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age."(Matthew 28:18-20) It is living who we are today with our brothers & sisters, families & friends, our communi-ties & parish. This is our calling, be humble, carry your cross & enter true life with God.
