Late Sri MachaniSomappa GaruLate Sri Machani Somappa GaruBorn in 1904 to a middle class joint family with weaving tradition, our visionaryPadmashri Machani Somappa, with his unflinching courage and entrepreneurial spirit grew to become the backbone of the very existence of a society mercilessly targeted by harsh famine adding to the impoverished living standards in Yemmiganur. The nationalist in him believed society to be the core, when he started out his enterprising career. The humanitarian in him saw success is not worth it, if massess of our country is not benefitted by it.

With the inspiration he gained as the advisory committee member of the Government, he opened Relief Center for Weavers during 1934 famine. In 1938, Somappa established Weaver's Co-operative society, one of its only kind at that time. His continuous hard work and dedication towards this endeavor brought him success and popularity, paving way for him to rise to the position ofNational Leader of Handloom Weavers. His passion and devotion to improvisation of social conditions lead him to become the prominent industrialist in Rayalseema. Based on the rising needs of society, Sommappa went on to establish an array of social institutions, thus transforming the face of Yemmiganur from an obscure weavers' village to an infrastructurally developed zone of sustained economic activity.

Government of India honored him by awarding the prestigious Padmashri in 1954 in recognition of his commitment and services rendered to Handloom industry. Some of the co-operative institutions he founded include The Yemmiganur Co-operative Town bank, The Yemmiganur Co-operative stores, The Yemmiganur Co-operative Milk Supply Society, The Yemmiganur Co-operative House Building Society, The Yemmiganur Leather Workers Co-operative Society for Harijans and The Yemmiganur Co-operative Marketing Society for Farmers.

Somappa entered into the engineering industry, as there was an opportunity to manufacture Coil Springs as an import substitute for a West German Collaboration. Taking up the good advice of Industry Secretary in Udyog Bhavan, he signed on collaboration with Stump & Schuele GMBH and created Stump, Schuele & Somappa in Bangalore. The collaboration has grown over years to become the largest quality spring maker in India, supplying products to OEM's in India and renowned brands in the automotive industry around the world. Today, our numerous industries and institutions host thousands of employees and we work as a family. The organization has been growing rapidly & is run by the next generations of Mr.Somappa.

The love for hometown and for the well being of its people, Somappa successfully created a world which is known as the MG Group. His life and ideas have always been the core source of inspiration for MGB family.
