Saturday Morning Tech Session

Hosted by Lawrie Alexander It was a dark and stormy morning on February 7th as

several members of the club gathered at the Alexander residence to learn about the disassembly of an MGB front end. When we arrived we found the MG was already raised on the altar of four jack stands, and coffee was ready with cookies and muffins; many thanks to Jane Alexander and Doris Carter. Lawrie's well-illuminated workspace was an excellent venue for this project, which got underway promptly at 10 a.m. With the road wheels already removed, the participants were able to settle around the beautiful red roadster for what turned out to be a wonderful morning. (Prez says continued) have volunteered to help in June and many are already hard at work planning

various activities. A big Thank You! to all of you. Event entries continue to come in, another mailer

will go out soon to encourage those who have not yet to register, and I feel confident that we will

reach our stated goal of at least 150 registrations. I was pleased to learn that several of our members are making serious efforts to ensure that

they go to Rohnert Park in an MG. Bill McCracken bought an MGB in case his TC's

renovations are not finished by June. Val and Corey are busily working on Val's MGA and

Corey's MGB with the goal of taking one or both there; and Dustin has begun work in earnest on his Midget to take him to GoF West, rather than

his Bugeye Sprite. If others of you are doing the same sort of thing, please let me know. If help

becomes necessary to finish your car, remember that's one of the reasons we have Tech Sessions -

it's not all about coffee and good things to eat! Apparently my column does receive some readership each month! In January, I urged

members to attend General Meetings in their MGs and I saw several more than usual in the

parking lot at Mimi's in February. Well Done! Now we just need the evenings to stay lighter

longer so we can stand around after the meetings and talk about our cars. Speaking of Mimi's, I know that several

people have been looking for alternative meeting locations which offer more space. A couple of

venues are under consideration and we are hopeful that one will prove suitable. My thanks to

everyone who has been helping in this matter. Let's keep those MGs on the road while the sun is still shining because it has to rain again

sometime soon ...... please ....

In the Bond of the Marque,

Lawrie

(Tech Session continued) a pry bar to free the caliper. It was noted that a rebuild of the calipers would be necessary

because a failure of the puck to spring back after use would cause excessive drag on the rotors, robbing gas mileage and even producing a pull in driving. Lawrie wisely supported the caliper with a wire

rather than allowing it to hang by the brake line, which could damage the line. Next order of business was to disconnect the tie rod end. Lawrie mentioned the standard technique of using a pickle fork, but he showed us his

method of supporting the threaded end of the tie rod on a jack and driving the steering arm down with a brass drift.

Now came the second interesting event. Even though the beautiful red MG looked clean and sparkly, both body and undercarriage, problems were lurking in the suspension. After several blows from the hammer, the tie rod could not be separated. So Lawrie wielded a bigger hammer and then a bigger hammer yet, and still he met with stubborn resistance. Several of the observers were given their turn at the problem, and the tie rod end finally yielded. We moved on to disassembly of the outside of the A-frame, which found the nuts also rusted and resistant. But brute force and stubbornness on the part of the workers prevailed. The jack was lowered to take off

the tension on the spring. Whoops. The sway bar needed to be disconnected. Back up with the jack, nut spun off and then on with the job.

The trunnion came out of the front shock with relatively little trouble. Because the shock absorber gave no resistance to movement, Lawrie made a quick diagnosis. The shock was shot, and the parts list grew longer. Inspection of the bearings revealed excessive play, so disassembly was necessary to make sure the bearings were not worn out. Lawrie explained the differences between the MGB and a standard American car on the set up of the front wheel bearings. The bearings were fine, but the spacer and outer bearing were not shimmed correctly, which will be corrected before re-installment.

NATTER MATTERS Attention now turned to disassembly of the swivel

to replace the worn kingpins. Unfortunately the rust

monster once again raised his ugly head. After much grunting and attempts by more (continued on page 3) (Tech session continued) than one person on the breaker bar, Lawrie decided to address the problem during the week to have it ready for

reassembly the following weekend. While attention was focused on the left assembly, along with the coffee, cookies and banana muffins, Corey Hogue was busily taking apart the right side of the steering assembly so it would be

ready for rebuilding and re-installment. Well done, Corey. This was a nice time of camaraderie and

accomplishment around a member's car. I felt the time was well spent. I can imagine that this MG will drive and handle like new when the job is complete. I will leave the story of the reassembly for another writer. I now understand more about the MGB front end, and, even if I am not up to tackling the job myself, I now know whom I can call upon for assistance if the need arises. Lawrie Alexander is the master.

An Honorable Mention goes to Jim Heilman who was the only attendee to brave the rain and drive his MGB to the session.

For the Good of the Club: Lawrie asked the group if anyone would

like to have a free 1977 MGB with wire wheels, lowered suspension, Weber carburetor and is a one owner car. The car has been sitting in a garage for

the last 5 years and has not been driven ever since it failed a smog test. The individual that owns the

car lives in Elk Grove. If you are interested contact Lawrie.

John Rowland has a 69 MGCGT that he would like to sell. Car runs great, it has no rust but needs a paint job. If you’re interested you can

contact him at 916-485-8339 or 916-296-1164 [email protected]

Jim Perell mentioned that there was a 1953 Jaguar XK120 for sale by an individual who lives

in Loomis. Jim indicated that the car has no rust, 80k miles and is a survivor car (all original), asking price is $79,000, which is probably negotiable. Let

Jim know if you are interested. 916-652-2258 [email protected]

The Legend of the MG Morgan

By Peter Darnall Editor’s Note: Beni Feil, on a trip to the grocery store met Peter Darnall. Peter noticed Beni’s UBSCC jacket and stopped him to tell him this story about Al Moss and the MG Morgan.

Have you heard any good Morgan stories lately? What about the legend of the MG Morgan? Was

there some sort of association between the Morgan Motor Company and the MG Car

Company that produced a limited number of 3-wheelers in the mid-1930s? Like most

undocumented car stories, this one is probably poppycock and should not be taken seriously. But, then again, it just might have been true.

I came across this story in a video on Speed Channel TV some time ago. I vaguely

remember the commentator, possibly Alan DeCadenet, telling a story about a rare MG

Morgan. It seemed that the founder of the Morgan Company, H.F.S. Morgan, had encountered some financial difficulties in the early

1930s and was seeking monetary assistance. The banks were in the midst of the Great Depression

and weren’t willing to provide the money. He turned to his friend and competitor, Cecil Kimber.

Kimber, who was the founder of the MG Car Company, agreed to provide the funding Morgan

needed with the stipulation (continued on page 8)

8 Issue No. 3 March 2015 A SVMGCC Publication

that the cars produced under this arrangement would carry an MG octagon badge. There

were perhaps fourteen cars produced under this agreement and they sported an MG badge

in place of the Morgan ornament. I was never able to find anybody that

knew anything about the MG Morgan until this year at the Monterey Historics. I had come across my friend, Al Moss, in the paddock. Al

was running his 1934 Morgan SS “trike” in the pre-war sports and touring car group. Al Moss

knows his cars very well and has been involved with the sports car movement on the West

Coast from the very early days following World War ll. His company, Moss Motors, was a leading mail order supplier of parts for

British sports cars for many years. He had restored the Morgan himself and took real

pride in the authenticity of the car. Al Moss is also well known for his

mischievous sense of humor. One intuitively checks for a hidden whoopee cushion before sitting down on any chair Al might offer. The

stories of his pranks are very much an integral part of sports car scene in Southern California.

When I saw the MG octagon badge on the radiator shell of his Morgan, I should have

been forewarned that things were not as they should have been. His evasive answer to my question about the MG badge dodged the

issue. He claimed the original Morgan emblem was damaged and he wanted something to

temporarily cover the spot. “I had an old MG octagon badge lying around and it was a

perfect fit.” That explained how the MG badge came to be mounted on Al’s Morgan. It did

not explain how the legend of the MG Morgan came to be or how a documentary video could

have been created which made actual reference to these cars. After some prodding, Al revealed

the rest of the story. His face turned red, almost the same color as his driving suit, as he recalled that embarrassing moment. One of his

"little jokes" had gotten out of hand. It happened a few years ago at a

previous Monterey Historics event, Al looked up to see a documentary film crew descending

on his Morgan in the paddock area.

Eventually someone in the group noticed the MG badge and asked him about it. Rather than admit

that he had used the MG badge to cover a hole, he came up with the cock-and-bull story of Cecil

Kimber and the MG Morgan on the spur of the moment. He even claimed that his Morgan was

the last of the fourteen cars, which carried the MG badge, and that it was the only one known to exist today. At this moment, unable to contain his

laughter any longer, he dived under the rear deck lid of the Morgan and pretended to make some

mechanical adjustment. After a long moment, he regained his composure and prepared to tell the

film crew about his little joke with them. To his

dismay, the film crew had left and were nowhere in sight. He looked around the paddock, but they had apparently packed up and gone for the day.

He claimed that he had no idea that the cameras were running or that his story had been recorded.

Al Moss’ tall tale of the MG Morgan eventually became part of a video and the legend of the MG

Morgan was born.

The Anti-Run On Valve

By Paul Lewis

As its name implies, this valve comes into operation when

you turn off your engine. When turning the ignition key off, you

should hear a Clunk-Click. This is how it works, when you turn off your key. The valve is energized thus opening and allowing air to go into the intake manifold. This will help alleviate any

running on problems due too low octane gasoline and ignition-timing settings that are in place too lower tailpipe emissions.

This valve is electrically energized through the Ignition Switch and an Oil Pressure sending unit located on the engine

block, MG Midget 1500. And on the engine bulkhead oil

pressure

gauge pipe MGB. When the

oil pressure

sending unit senses

no oil pressure is present. It

will turn off the

electricity to the

valve. Thus putting it in

the closed

position. However, a

word of warning for all you MG owners, you may often see oil seeping from these sending units.

Don’t go to NAPA, Auto Zone or

other parts stores to purchase a replacement sender. While the replacement part may look like it will fit on the outside they are totally different on the inside. For example, when I was working for my former employer, European Sports Car Garage. I would get many an MG towed in with a dead battery. One check I would always do was to see if there was an electrical draw on the battery. When the anti-run on valve oil pressure switch had been replaced with the incorrect one, the replacement valve will be constantly energized even with the ignition turn off stealing juice 24/7.
