INDUSTRY DRIVERS, CHALLENGES & TRENDS

Industry Drivers, Challenges & Trends11

TheManufacturingIndustrytodayiswitnessingrapidandsignificantchangesthatwouldaffecteverypossiblebusinessarea of the industry. Most of these can be attributed to few technological shifts namely IoT, Big Data Analytics, Digitalization etc. Most companies are trying to adopt these changes into their existing systems to get the much-needed edge over their competitors.

Rapid technology change is one of the major challenges faced by the Manufacturing Industry. The line between machines and IT become blurrier everyday as technology is evolving evolves and it is happening faster than ever. This fast-pacedenvironmentmakesitdifficultforcompaniestoadapttothesechangesintime.

Supply Chain continues to be the Achilles-heel and main challenge of the Manufacturing Industry. Every company wants to be global (large geographic spread) and as a result of which controlling the supply chain and making it efficientwill be the key issue.Even in supply chain, its visibility remains tobe themajor areaof concern.Rapidinnovation and commoditization of products has led to tremendous pricing pressure as well.

Few of the key industry trends are-Supply Chain of Tomorrow: Going forward there will be a huge amount of real time data available at every point of supply chain. Big data analytics will help the companies to convert the data into actionable intelligence. Key enablers for tomorrow’s supply chain are – Cost to Serve, Alignment to Business Strategy, Supply Chain Analytics, SKU Rationalization and Integrated Business Planning. Companies want to make their supply chain completely connected from end to end (Holistic optimisation from suppliers to customers).

IoT: It is the latest buzzword in every industry. IoT provides the ability for a company to monitor and analyse data on realtimebasis.Italsohelpsinproactive/preventivemaintenance,productivity&effectivenessimprovement.

Robotics: Due to increase in labour cost and productivity concerns, robotics have become one of the lucrative developments. Usage of robots will increase the productivity of manufacturing systems and system can get rid of human errors.

3D Printing: 3D printing as a technology can provide a company with economies of production, rapid reduction in prototypebuild time, manufacturingprocessflexibility, production lead timereduction, reduced investment, abilitytomanufacturingcomplicatedmaterials, buildbodyparts(transplantableorgans).Withallthesebenefitsandmuchmore, 3D printing is one of the most popular trends in the manufacturing industry.

Cloud Computing: This refers to usage of internet-connected remote services to store, retrieve and manage data. Cloud computing is getting more & more reliable and is able to cut down costs substantially as evidenced from many firmswhohaveimplementedthesame.Manufacturingindustriesareleveragingthistechnologytostoredatacentrallyandshareinvariousgeographicareasquicklyandefficiently.

Industry Updates

Industry UpdatesExpansion and optimization approaches for US manufacturers: To be effective, enterprise footprint optimizationneeds to be a continuous process. Proactively responding to dynamic company strategy, revenue growth, and cost containment, in concert with growth decisions, can create a framework for continuous improvement that maximizes value.

Caterpillar uses facial recognition softwaretoidentifysleepyequipmentoperators: Mines operate around the clock, so they have employees who work long shifts through the night, running the risk of noddingoffatthewheel.Operatorfatigueisapotentiallyfatal problem, and Caterpillar recognized this and is working on a solution. Caterpillar Safety Services joined forces with tech company Seeing Machines to create and install fatigue detection software into thousands of mine trucks across the world.

General Electric: Digitalization Impressive, Not Enough to ‘Move the Needle’:

Robots, Jobs and Productivity in the Manufacturing Industry:

General Electric presented a stronger case for why their digital transformation should be considered a major opportunity for the company. General Electric’s heavy investment, and yes cultural transformation, should in theendhelpdrivenewservicesgrowthandprofitability. We expect information system efficiency to have a bigimpact, just as the tech revolution in the 90s did.

Industrial robotics is changing the U.S. manufacturing industry portrait, stimulating companies to bring back activity in the country. From 1979 to 2009, thanks to the high wages in developed countries, many companies moved manufacturing activities offshore. The very lowwages and the moderate transport costs made this move profitable. But the picture has been changing for thepast few years. It makes sense to consider an increased adoption of automation technologies for the same time period to have made an impact in productivity, therefore cutting by half the gap in the worker production wages per hour for the same time period.
