1 USB Modem Introduction

1.1 Introduction

Thank you for choosing the MF620 HSDPA USB Modem.

To guarantee the mobile phone always in its best condition, please read this manual

carefully and keep it for future use.

The pictures, symbols and contents in this manual are just for your reference. They might

not be completely identical with your phone. Please subject to the real object. ZTE operates a

policy of continuous development and reserves the right to update and modify the technical

specifications in this document at any time without prior notice.

MF620 HSDPA USB Modem is a type of multi-mode, 3G modem, applicable to

GSM/GPRS/EDGE/WCDMA/HSDPA network. With USB interface to connect to notebook

PC, it integrates some functions of modem and mobile phone, and combines mobile

communication with the Internet perfectly. Via GSM/GPRS/EDGE/WCDMA/HSDPA mobile

network, it carries out data service and SMS service, helping you break away from limitation of

time and zone, and communicate wirelessly anytime and anywhere.

1.2 Safety Warning and Notice

To the owner

� Some electronic devices are susceptible to electromagnetic interference sent by modem if

inadequately shielded, such as electronic system of vehicles. Please consult the

manufacturer of the device before using modem if necessary.

� Operating of notebook PC and modem may interfere with medical devices like hearing aids

and pacemakers. Please always keep modem more than 20 centimeters away from such

medical devices when they are in use. Power off modem if necessary. Consult a physician

or the manufacturer of the medical device before using modem.

� Be aware of the usage limitation when using a modem at places such as oil warehouses or

chemical factories, where there are explosive gases or explosive products being processed.

Do not use modem if necessary.

� Store modem out of the reach of small children. Modem may cause injury if used as a toy.

Modem

� Please use original accessories or accessories that are authorized by the manufacturer.

Using any unauthorized accessories may affect your modem's performance, and violate

related national regulations about telecom terminals.

� Avoid using modem near metallic structure device or establishment that can emit

electromagnet wave. Otherwise it may influence receiving of signals.

� The modem is non-waterproof, please keep it dry and store in shady and cool place.

� Don't use modem immediately after sudden temperature change. In such case, there will

be dew inside and outside the modem, so don't use it until it becomes dry.

� Take the modem carefully. Don't drop, bend, knock or harshly treat it to avoid destructive

damage.

� No dismantling by non-professional and only qualified maintainer can undertake repair

work.

In Aircraft

� Please power off modem before the airplane takes off. In order to protect airplane's

communication system from interference, it is never allowed to use modem when it is in

flight. Using it before the plane taking off should get aircrew's permission according to safety

regulations.

1.3 Applicability Scope

MF620 HSDPA USB Modem supports main prevailing types of laptops or portable computer,

such as HP, IBM, Toshiba, Lenovo, Dell, Founder, etc.

1.4 System Requirements

Operating System:Windows 2000 / XP / Vista

Configuration (Recommended):

CPU 500MHz Pentium or above

Hard Disk 20G or above

RAM 128M or above

The performance of the modem may be influenced if configuration under recommendation

required.

Functions: SMS service, Data service, Applications management, Data concurrent, etc.

2 Installation

2.1 Unpacking

Check the following articles in the package: Modem, USB Cable, and Warranty Card.

2.2 Appearance and Parts

2.3 Hardware Installation

1. Insert the SIM/USIM Card into the Modem:

Before using the modem, please be sure that SIM/USIM card can support data and GPRS

services, etc. Please contact with network provider to acquire more information.

As showed in picture below, insert the SIM/USIM card with the metal contact area facing

downwards into the SIM/USIM card modem slot properly.

2. Insert the Battery into Modem:

The attached Li-ion battery along with the phone can be used after unpacking. For the first

three times, please use up the power and charge it fully for a new battery to perform well.

Remove: (1) Press the back cover release button and push the back-cover of the modem

down to release and remove it off the modem. (2) Put finger on the bottom finger grip, and then

lift up the battery from the finger grip to remove the battery.

Installation: (1) Replace the battery into the battery slot, to be noted that the upper end of the

battery firstly inserted. (2) Put the back-cover of the modem flatly upon the body of phone. Direct

the back cover towards the locking catches on the both sides of the modem and push the

back-cover of the modem upward to lock the cover into its place.

3. Connect Modem with Notebook PC:

Connect Modem with Notebook PC by modem cable.

2.4 Software Installation

The system will automatically detect and recognize the new hardware and display the new

icon appears on the system taskbar, indicating that the computer and the USB Modem have

been connected properly. After a few seconds, there will show the following installation interface

if the notebook PC supports automatic installation.

Note: If your notebook PC and operating system does not support automatic installation,

you can also install in manual way following the steps stated hereinafter.

2.4.1 For Windows XP System

If notebook PC can launch installation automatically, the following installation interface will

show how to start installation for Windows XP system.

Click "Next" to go to the welcome page popped next.

Strongly recommend you to exit the "Windows" programs, and click "Next".

Read the agreement carefully. If you agree, choose "I agree to the terms of this license

agreement", and then click "Next".

Select the folder where you would like to install the modem, you can select a different path

by clicking "Change", then click "Next".

Please verify your modem cable is plug out, and left click "Next" to install.

Confirm the installation information, and left click "Next" to start installation.

Installation is in progress, after a while, there will be a tip as follows:

Left click "Finish" and finish installation.

After the installation, select "Start" menu→"Programs" and there will be a " MF620

HSDPA USB Modem " program group listed in, which includes " MF620 HSDPA USB Modem

","MF620 HSDPA USB Modem User Guide" and "Uninstall", and a shortcut icon on the desktop

is also created .

2.4.2 For Windows 2000 System

For Windows 2000 system, if notebook PC doesn't launch installation automatically, you

can run the installation program in path of My Computer > ZTEMODEM.

Right click virtual drive "ZTEMODEM" and select "Open" or left click "ZTEMODEM" to view

the list of files.

Double click "AutoRun.exe" to run installation, pop-up the window below.

The steps of installation afterwards will be the same as Windows XP system, please refer to

the descriptions hereinbefore.

Note: If you have problems with installation after the upper operation, please contact the

service provider for help.

2.4.3 For Vista System

For Microsoft Vista system, to avoid abnormal installation it is suggested to turn off UAC

before installation following the path of Start> Control Panel> User Accounts> "Turn User

Account Control On or Off, as shown in the pictures below.

Restart your computer when you finish settings and connect the modem again. The pop-up

window will show "Run AutoRun.exe" icon on the display.

Click "Run AutoRun.exe" to start installation.

The steps of installation afterwards will be the same as Windows XP system, please refer

to the descriptions hereinbefore.

2.5 Running Application Software

After the modem is installed and connected normally, your notebook PC will launch the

application software automatically. After modem initializing, main interface appears. When the

standby icon appears, the modem can work in normal way.

If your notebook PC can not launch the application software automatically, click the Start →

Programs→ MF620 HSDPA USB Modem → MF620 HSDPA USB Modem menu on the

notebook PC to run the application software. Or double click the shortcut icon on the

desktop, to run the application software.

2.6 Pull out Modem Safely

Please close the application software at first, and then pull out the modem USB cable finally.

2.7 Software Uninstallation

Close the application program before the software uninstalling.

Left click Start→ Programs→ MF620 HSDPA USB Modem → Uninstall menu on the

notebook PC.

Click "Yes" according to the indication, then the system begins to uninstall programs.

Left click "Finish" and complete the application software uninstalling.

3 Functions & Operation

3.1 Interface Introduction

3.1.1 Main Interface

The diagrammatic drawing for the main interface of USB modem application software is as

follows:

The interface forms into three parts, related functions can be executed by operating in

corresponding area.

1. Functional Button Area

There will be various functional button icons shown in this area. Select different function

button and it will carry out corresponding operation.

Homepage.

Internet: Connect to the Internet.

SMS: Send SMS or read SMS Inbox.

Phonebook: Save and view different information of the contact list.

Settings: Set normal relative information for the modem.

Help: System information for Help.

Show the system status and different kinds of tip.

Shows network signal intensity, 5 stages from none to strong .

There are new SMS at present.

It shows the current status of Internet connection. Red means Internet disconnected,

while green means that it has already connected.

Letter "P" means supporting packet-switch (P) service, while letter "C" means

supporting circuit switch (C) service.

SIM/USIM card is roaming.

Indicates insert status of the modem, "Green" it has been connected to the computer,

orange indicates offline and red indicates disconnected.

Indicates insert status of the SIM/USIM card to the mode. Green indicates the card has

been inserted, and red indicates not been inserted.

Battery level.

Indicates the current network service type, i.e. UMTS or GSM in service.

Name of the current service provider.

: View related information for your operation, such as user name, start

time, disconnect time, duration, data received and data sent.

3. User Area

Show the interactive computer information under various conditions.

3.1.2 Description of Minimize Icons

When click on the minimize button, the software will minimize as an icon on the window

taskbar, without influencing data download, receiving SMS when connect to Internet. Double

click on the icon, modem interface resiles.

Modem is in normal standby status.

Green indicates already connecting of modem with PC, orange indicates offline, while

red indicates disconnecting successfully.

Red indicates no SIM/USIM card in the modem.

No network signal.

New Message.

Green indicates successful connection of modem to Internet.

2. Using Taskbar Icon:

Right Click the icon, it appears the following menu:

Modem Offline: Stop using the modem and disconnect the modem to Internet. When offline the

modem, if you want to run the software again, you should pull out the modem cable and connect

the modem with PC again. While the application interface is not shut down, pause/ restore the

working of modem.

Help: Enter Help interface.

About: View the information of the application software and hardware versions.

Exit: Close the application interface and stop using the modem.

Note: In this manual, "click" or "double click" means click the left button of mouse, except for

specially explanation.

3.2 Connecting Internet

You can browse web pages after you have accessed to Internet with the help of modem,

you can also receive SMS while surfing on Internet.

1. Connect to the Internet

Click the Internet icon, the system will ask you "Connect now?" Select "Connect".

When connected, it will show status as "Connected", and it will show data flow, connected

time and so on.

During the course of connecting, when the "Connect" button becomes "Disconnect" button,

you can cancel the connecting.

At the same time, an icon on taskbar appears indicating network connection. Then you can

access Internet and receive email etc. via network.

2. Disconnect the Internet

Click "Disconnect" button to disconnect Internet. After disconnection, a normal standby

icon appears on taskbar.

3.3 SMS

Note: To ensure utilizing SMS features properly, a correct SMS center number must be set

at first . Refer to "3.5.4 Messages settings".

Click "SMS" icon to switch to the SMS interface and it shows the number of SMS in the

inbox, outbox and draft box. Click icon of "InBox", "OutBox", "Draft Box" and "New Message"

to enter relative interface.

InBox: Save SMS received.

OutBox: Save SMS sent successfully.

Draft box: Save SMS to be edited before sending as draft in PC.

For example: "Message in InBox PC :0(Items) (U)SIM Card:16(Items)" indicating: There is 0

short message in PC, and 16 short message in (U)SIM card. ”Database capacity” means 1500

short messages can be stored in PC. "(U)SIM card capability" means the (U)SIM card can store

20 pcs of SMS in Maximum.

Different SIM/USIM card has different capacity. For more information, please consult your

supplier. The system shows the capacity automatically in using modem, as shown above "20".

3.3.1 Read SMS

Click "Inbox" button or SMS icon in system information area to read the SMS saved in Inbox.

Make use of the bottom menu buttons to read, reply, forward, transfer, delete, save

numbers or cancel message.

3.3.2 Create New Message

Click "New Message" button to input the recipient's number and content.

Input the recipient's number directly or select one/more/group records in the phonebook

(The recipient's number(s) can be one or more, using ";" to separate), and then press "SMS"

button.

SMS text can not exceed 160 individual English characters (including English symbols).

Click "Send", make a choice of "Yes" or "No" according to the prompt on the display to send

short message or not. After sending successfully, this SMS will be saved into outbox

automatically. If sending fails, the short message will be saved into DraftBox; click "Cancel" to

return to the interface of "New Message".

Send SMS while browsing the web:

If network supports, you can send short messages when surf on the Internet. Click "SMS"

icon button, enter the short message interface to send short messages in normal way.

3.3.3 The SMS Box Operating Guide

Enter any of Inbox/Outbox/Draftbox to execute the following functions:

Read: Read all the information of short messages. (The content of short messages,

sender's phone number, sending time and date)

Reply: Reply short messages to the sender.

Forward: Forward short message to other recipients.

Move: Change the saving location of short messages between PC or USIM/SIM card.

Delete: Delete short messages selected.

Save: Save sender's number into the phonebook.

Cancel: Return to the SMS interface.

Make use of "Ctrl" or "Shift" key and left click to choose several messages to execute

simultaneously.

The system indicates when USIM/SIM card is full (USIM/SIM cards differs in capacity). New

message can only be received and saved till the user clear some short messages in USIM/SIM

card inbox.

3.4 Phonebook

Click "Phonebook" icon to switch to phone book interface, phonebook information can be

saved in the PC or SIM/USIM card. Each record includes contact Name, Mobilephone,

Homephone, Officephone number, Email and Group name which it belongs to.

1. New Contact

Left click "New" →"New Contact", input all the information, then select "OK" to finish.

2. New Group

You can add new groups in PC. But you cannot add new groups in the (U)SIM card.

Left click "New" →"New Group" and name the new group in PC group folder tree. Select

the folder group you want to add or edit information, and input all the information according to

prompt.

Select record from the list and click "View" to edit information, click "OK" to close.

Select record from the list and click "Edit" to edit information, click "OK" to finish.

3. Buttons Description

If any contact or group is selected, you can carry out the following steps:

View: View contacts or group information.

Delete: Delete contacts or groups.

SMS: Send message to the mobile phone numbers in the records.

Save As: Save the contacts or groups in portable PC as file or text.

Edit: Edit the information of selected groups and contacts.

3.5 Settings

Click "Settings" icon to switch to the settings interface. It includes: Security Settings,

Network Settings, Messages Settings, Alert Settings, and Factory Settings.

3.5.1 Security Settings

The interface shows as the following picture:

1. Enable the PIN Code

When "PIN enable" item is selected, you will asked to enter PIN code to use the modem.

You can click "Revise PIN" to modify the number.

Note: This function need network support.

2. Backup Phonebook, SMS and Internet connection records

Select this function to backup the Phonebook, SMS and Internet connection records in

portable PC. Click "Resume" to restore the backup data.

3.5.2 Network Settings

Automatic: The system selects the network automatically according to user's configuring

rules and network status.

Manual: User selects network in manual way.

Select network "Automatic" on left, and "Mode preference" on right side, click "Apply",

pop-up the following window:

Select network "Manual", and click "Manual" button on right side, pop-up the following

window:

After a while, network operator list appears in which red ones are unavailable. Select the

proper network to connect.

Click "Select", to finish setting network.

3.5.3 Config File

To ensure the modem connect Internet properly, you'd better configure user's network

information at first. You can save different operator's network configurations in different files.

1. Button Description:

Add: Add new configuration files.

Delete: Delete the selected configuration files.

Edit: Edit the selected configuration files.

Set default: Select one file from filename list, and set it as the current using files.

The user configuration information includes: Config filename, Dial Number, User name,

Password, APN, DNS, and PDP address. If network support "Obtain server address

automatically", the modem can obtain the assigned IP information automatically. If network do

not support it, you should fill the proper address manually. Please consult the network supplier of

SIM/USIM card for all above information. The user configuration information may differ with the

network supplier and network types.

3.5.4 Messages Settings

Message Center: Set the corresponding SMS center number via the SIM/USIM card of the

supplier. You must input correct SMS center number provided by the network supplier to use the

SMS properly. Please enter country code before the number (e.g. SMS center number of China

Mobile is "+8613800290500").

Validity Period: Set the SMS storage time duration limited in network. (This function needs

network supports.) in the options of 12 hours/A day/A week/The longest period.

Delivery Report: Set as "Turn On" or "Turn Off". When it is set as "Turn On", the network

will inform you of the status of sending messages.

3.5.5 Alert Settings

You can set "Connection alert, Disconnect alert, Incoming SMS alert and Incoming call

alert" by yourself. Alert uttered by portable PC. If you select "Mute", alert sounds in silence.

3.5.6 Factory Settings

Restoring the settings of current network configuration to factory default value won't influence

phonebook and saved messages.

3.6 Help

Click "Help" icon to switch to help interface. Under Help subject, you can get the USB

modem information on functions introduction, installation and usage guide, versions and date of

application software and hardware published, etc.

4 FAQ & Answers

When you meet the following problems in service, please refer to the following answers to

solve it. If the problems still exist, please contact with your suppliers.

Problem Description

Possible Causes Problem Solving

The system can not run the installation program automatically

The system configuration is not suitable for the auto-run.

Open the visual disc of the modem program and start the autorun.exe. If you have installed the other version of installation program please uninstall it firstly.

After the full installation, the system doesn't install the driver program properly.

The system configuration is not suitable for the auto-run.

Please install the driver program manually. The driver program can be found in the installation address, e.g. C:\Program Files\ MF620 HSDPA USB Modem \drivers

After the modem is plugged in, the UI program doesn't run automatically.

The system configuration is not proper.

Please open the UI program manually. You can find it in the Start ¨C Program menu or the desktop interface.

1. You are in the place where no GSM/GPRS/EDGE/WCDMA/HSDPA network covered, such as underground parking lot, tunnel etc.

1 Change to the place where having good sign

2. The modem isn't connected well. 2. Pull out and insert the modem cable safely again.

3. The SIM/USIM card isn't inserted

well, such as inserted in reverse. 3. Insert the SIM/USIM card correctly again.

After restarted the computer, there is no signal all the time.

4. The position of the USB modem inner antenna is unfitting.

1£®Adjust the angle of the USB modem inner antenna.

1. The installation programs of the USB modem haven't been installed properly.

1. Run the installation program first, and then connect the modem. If you use the WinXP operating system, install the drivers according to the Windows indication information to operate.

2. The modem isn't connected well. 2. Restart the computer, or connect the modem again.

When the USB Modem is being installed, the notebook computer cannot find it.

3. The SIM/USIM card isn't inserted well, such as inserted in reverse.

3. Insert the SIM/USIM card correctly again.

1. The SMS center number isn't correct.

1. After consulted with service provider, configure the right number. Message sent failed.

2. The network is busy and other reasons.

2. Try later.

1. You are in the place where no GSM/GPRS/EDGE/WCDMA/HSDPA network covered, such as underground parking lot, tunnel etc.

1. Change to the place where having good signal.

2. The network at this time in this place is busy now.

2. Try later.

3. The dial number or the APN in the user config files is error.

3. Check with the dial number or the APN in the user config file in the "Network settings".

Date connection failed.

4. The modem data is error. 4. It is perhaps of the GPRS or WCDMA network problem and connects with the local supplier timely.

5. The network type selected by manual is wrong.

5. Select the correct network type according to the type of the SIM/USIM card.

1. After connection, there is no data transfer, which resulted that you cannot open web pages.

1. Check that the APN in the configuration files is correct or not.
