Rosh Hodesh
Please take note that Rosh Hodesh Tammuz will take place on Monday and Tuesday June 22nd and 23rd respectively.
Coronavirus Precautions Reminder
As services resume we would like to remind everyone that face masks and gloves are strongly encouraged during services and
during times of singing but are not mandatory unless you are given an Aliya, in which case, a face mask is mandatory. Face
masks should be worn after services are over when social distancing is difficult to be kept. In order to keep with government rec-
ommendation of social distancing we would appreciate if members can minimize their movement during services in
the synagogue. Please refer to the rules taped to the front door for full information.
Parashat Shelah - Lashon Hara: Transgenerational effect
למטה יוסף למטה מנשה, גדי בן סוסי
Sometimes we can do something so small that can have an effect many generations later. While this certainly is the case for a
good deed, unfortunately it works the other way around as well. While it may not be so clear in the eyes of man, but the eyes of
God don't overlook even the slightest of our iniquities. It is well known that Yosef had two sons: Efrayim and Menashe. While
Menashe was the firstborn, Hashem made it be that Efrayim would be the "more important" of the two sons. Yet, we notice some-
thing peculiar in the beginning of this week's Parasha. When listing the names of the individuals who are designated to spy out
the Land of Cana'an, Yosef's name precedes the name of Menashe and not Efrayim. In addition, in all other occurrences in the the
Torah where Efrayim and Menashe are mentioned, Efrayim is listed first. Nonetheless the verse in the beginning of the Parasha
begins: "To the tribe of Yosef, the tribe of Menashe, Gadi the son of Susi." Only after that does it state "To the tribe of Efrayim,
Hoshea bin Nun." Why is this so?
The Da'at Zekenim explains that here is where Yosef was given punishment for the false accusations he laid out towards his broth-
ers when he was a young lad. The Lashon Hara that he spoke when he was 17 years old was never forgotten, and Hashem chose
to associate his name with the representative of Menashe (Gadi ben Susi) who
would soon speak negatively about the Land of Cana'an. It would be improper and mistaken to juxtapose Yosef and Efrayim,
whose representative was Yehoshua, who was one of only two people to say the truth and remain positive.
I learn from this episode two lessons. First, as I mentioned above, Hashem never overlooks even our smallest actions and he has
many ways to remind us about them in the future. Secondly, the effect of Lashon Hara is so strong that forever it can associate a
person with people who live for use of evil speech; albeit unwillingly. Once a person is classified as a "Ba'al Lashon Hara" - a per-
son who is regular with Lashon Hara - it is very difficult to remove that label from himself. Even Yosef, who was in NO WAY a "Ba'al
Lashon Hara" and who lived an "almost perfect" life, was still reminded of that moment in his life where he slipped with the
tongue. That reminder is hinted in our Torah for all of us to learn from.
