Questions

• How does digitalization change the field of higher education?

• How we can master this change?

The connected world

• The good and especially bad news spread at speed of light.

• A huge bunch of the information produced in the world can be found from the internet for free.

Top social tools for administration

• For real-time collaboration in preparation of documents: Google Drive

• In the marketing: all the tools the students use

• FB, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr…

• For broadcasting announcements: Twitter feed embedded in the homepage

• For collecting information: wikis

Tips for organizations in social media

• Don’t be too official

• Ensure this is ok for the management!

• Nothing wins a good story

• Be personal

Private social media for management

• In the intranet, make it possible to leave comments.

• Less email, less hassle.

• The chance to comment feels nice.

Rolling out social tools• Way 1: Introduce many tools and see which ones

people adopt.

• Way 2: Introduce a tool, and give the users solid benefit for participating

• I believe the way 2 is the way you should do it in higher education.

• For example: why have an internal HR system with CV & profile, when you already have one in LinkedIn?

How to behave in social media

• Many ”old-school” pr tricks don’t work in social media:

• removing stuff

• denying problems

• Be honest – if you or your organization fails, admit it and say you are sorry.

• Discuss, don’t (just) broadcast

• Decide if you do or do not want to represent yourself or the organization – this is hard to change afterwards

The privacy issues

• Storing personal information in cloud services outside the European Union is forbidden.

• Luckily, most of the stuff where the social tools are useful does not contain personal information.
