So, we are in the thick of the silly season. I totally believe that because

I’m already feeling pretty silly myself, with a million things to do and

all those little stresses building up in the back of my mind like a

corner that attracts windblown debris. There are blogs and articles and tips

appearing all over the place on How to Survive the Silly Season, like it’s

some kind of weather bomb building up – an unavoidable cyclone of

ribbons, bubbly, tarts, cards, pine trees and presents. But this year I’ve

decided I’m going to try to not only survive the season, but thrive on the

season. I’m going to ‘be in the moment’ and enjoy the camaraderie, the

break up events, catching up with family, shopping for thoughtful presents

and planning a Christmas brunch menu. I’m also going to do my little bit for

those who aren’t so well off. And for that aspect I have to thank Nikki Dew

and her team at Families for Families. Read about how she started the

charity by having an epiphany when she saw her own family’s Christmas

table groaning with delightful food. She sat back in her chair and thought

about how good it would be if she could give some of their excess to

families in need. It’s a heart-warming article and it’s wonderful to see that

Christmas to so many Cantabrians means more than the commercial hype

it is so often labelled with (pages 12 and 13). When you think about it, the

special things about Christmas are about helping and giving to others, the

look on the faces of children when they see Christmas lights (pages 12 and

13) and Santa, and the joy and compassion they learn when they give to

other children not so well off. Teach them how to do that with the Pay it

Forward Christmas Tree (page 11).And just to ensure you not only survive, but thrive this silly season check

out stylist Stephanie Rumble’s Party Wear outfits from around town – after

all it’s the time of year we all want to shine.

A lovely thing about Christmas is that it's compulsory, like a thunderstorm, and we all go through it together. – Garrison Keillor

Maria O’HalloranMaria O’Halloran, CEO of Ballantynes department store, took over the leadership role a year ago following

a strong tenure by former CEO Mary Devine who was instrumental in the repair and rebuild of the iconic store following the destructive February 2011 quake. When Ballantynes reopened, at the end of October 2011 with the launch of Re:Start, shoppers were wowed by the refurbished and refreshed store and the sparkling new cosmetics hall. Since then Ballantynes has continuously introduced new brands, concepts and heightened customer service – a large portion of this has been due to the vision and ethos of Maria O’Halloran. I caught up with Maria to find out more about her background, how and where she has been steering Christchurch’s much loved store and her vision for the future…

You had a beauty therapy business in

Halswell “Beautiful You” in the early

‘90s was this how your career in

business began?I have always had an interest in health and

wellbeing and considered going down the

homeopathy route or beauty therapy. It was

whatever study fitted in around horse riding

back then, and yes, I was quite bullish and

keen to have my own business.

How long were you involved in the beauty industry and where did the association take you? Twenty years or so, I’ve had some amazing

experiences and opportunities. The beauty

industry enabled me to learn many of the skills

required for my role today. Leading a team,

marketing, sales, manufacturing, sourcing and

of course the view of both the customer and

supplier. My last role in beauty was National

Sales Manager with Shiseido, reporting to

Tokyo. It required me to commute to Auckland

as I didn’t want to leave Christchurch. Working

for industry giants gave me great insight into

the global markets they operate in, along with

cultural awareness.

How long were you Ballantynes beauty brand manager, leading a team of 50, before you were offered the position of CEO?I had been in the role for two years. A wonderful

way to learn the ins and outs of the store. It

was a huge advantage knowing most of the

staff when I changed roles. We have a great

team.

How many staff do you now lead?We have a permanent staff of 340 across the

three branches. That includes all the wonderful

Christmas crew who have just come on board

to help us during our busiest time of year.

One year down the track what have been your primary goals and have you achieved them?We had some ambitious goals this year and I

am pleased to say that yes, we achieved them.

The standouts are that we now offer our

customers the opportunity to view our

publications and shop online and we have

continued to successfully trade in the middle of

a building site.

In a competitive retail environment what are Ballantynes strengths and how do you plan to increase them? Our core strengths are in our service and

quality of merchandise – finding those perfect

products that excite and entice and good “old

fashioned” customer service. That

combination has worked successfully for

Ballantynes for 160 years and through our

continued focus on good buying, training and

development – this can only strengthen.

What have been some of the challenges of getting shoppers to return to the CBD and how are you overcoming them? The staff often hear me refer to the store as The

Bubble in the Rubble and slowly around us

green shoots are appearing. Operating in the

middle of a rebuilding city definitely gives us a

unique set of challenges – access and parking

to say the least.

What research do you undertake to

ensure you are always providing what

the customer desires in an ever-

changing industry? The key is listening to our customers. On top of

that our talented buyers with many years’

experience between them – travel the globe to

find the perfect products.

Page 7: Metropol 27-11-14

Metropol November 27, 2014 7

What are three of the most exciting innovations Ballantynes has introduced in the past year?It has been an exciting year for us. Number 1 -

The introduction of some exclusive and

amazing brands – Nespresso boutique, A full

Huffer concept, and the Jo Malone installation.

Number 2 - Our events and theatre in store –

we have achieved some real wows from

international standard fashion parades to

fabulous and very popular cooking classes.

Number 3 – The ability for our customers to

view our catalogues and shop online.

What makes an effective CEO?A good listener, someone with a vision who will

back themselves and take their team on the

journey with them. To always remember

turnover is vanity, profit is sanity.

Who has been your most inspiring

mentor? My mother. As a single mum she did an

amazing job raising me. We speak every day

and her support of me is endless, inspiring

and every now and again – grounding!

What is your personal philosophy on success in life?Balance.

What is your favourite item of clothing?Truthfully – my slippers! Instant comfort from

heels to slippers.

How do you manage a demanding career with family life?We are just moving into the next phase of family

life – the empty nesters. My son has just

finished school and will be studying in Auckland

next year, and my daughter recently moved out

of home. So the juggle has just got a little

easier.

What music are you enjoying at

present?Apparently I have very eclectic taste in music, I

enjoy both current and classic… right now I am

enjoying the talent NZ produces - Broods.

What one book would you suggest everyone read?Outliers – Malcolm Gladwell

What pastimes do you enjoy most?We regularly head down to Lake Benmore, I am

a keen water-skier. Skiing on glass-like water

looking at Mt Cook is a magical moment for me. If you could go back and tell your teenage self something what would it be?Save more spend less…. easier said than done.

What is your proudest achievement?Being a parent of two children who, thankfully,

have respect and manners.

What were you doing the last time the thought went through your mind, “I shouldn’t be doing this”?Usually trying to cook something out of a recipe

book for the first time. Let’s just say I can’t have

a smoke alarm in the kitchen! I encourage my

husband to spend as much time in the kitchen

as possible.

Which is your favourite café, bar or restaurant in Canterbury? That is easy… ello café in our Contemporary

Lounge at Ballantynes. I have pretty much tried

the entire cabinet. It’s been a struggle to wean

myself of my daily Super Food Muffin fix.

What would you like to see in the ‘new’ Christchurch?More parking please.

What are you like at parties?I enjoy a good party, however my staying power

has certainly reduced as I’ve got older! Next

week we have our staff Christmas party – so we

will see.

What is next on your wish list?Being able to beat my mother at golf!

Always rememberturnover is vanity, profit is sanity.“

FASHION: ON THE POLO FIELD

FASHION HOUSES WORKING STYLE, PORTFOLIO,

ANGELA STONE, REPERTOIRE, BELLEZA,

ANNAH STRETTON, DEVAL AND CA BOUGE OF AKAROA WILL HAVE

ALL THE LATEST SUMMER TRENDS

ON SHOW.

How does an evening of fashion, bubbly, canapés, live music and a bit of that most British upper-crust sport – polo – sound to you? Pretty irresistible I would think, especially when it is all in aid of an extremely worthwhile cause – Ronald McDonald House South Island.

That is what you can have at

“Fashion on the Polo Field”

on Thursday 11 December.

Tickets cost $60 per

person and it all starts at

6.00pm at the Port Hills

Polo Club on Gilmours

Road, Tai Tapu.

For the past few years Ronald McDonald House South

Island (RMHSI) has been hosting the very successful “A

Day at the Polo”. This year's event on 13 December is

already sold out. So the idea of a lead-up fashion and polo

event is a chance for others to experience a great atmosphere

and an evening of entertainment and fellowship in the

Christmas party spirit while ensuring the ongoing work of the

charity.

RMHSI has a simple mission – to improve the health and

wellbeing of children in hospital by providing free accommodation

and support for their families. As many as 30 families can be

supported by the organisation's facilities in Christchurch and

Invercargill each night and they are never charged for their stay,

regardless of whether it is for one night or for many weeks. Indeed,

since the beginning of this year 642 families have been supported –

some 25,528 bed-nights. Quite staggering statistics.

So dress up in your best country-style outfit, gather some friends

together and join in the fun. Fashion houses Working Style, Portfolio,

Angela Stone, Repertoire, Belleza, Annah Stretton, Deval and Ca

Bouge of Akaroa will have all the latest summer trends on show.

Andrea Allen of CTV is the MC for the evening and she will introduce

the designers and fashion houses and tell the audience a little about

each one.

As part of the evening a garment donated by each fashion house

will be auctioned. Models are donating their time, as are Corkin and

Friends hairdressers, the Kristin Stewart School of Makeup, musician

Mandy Pickering and Lincoln Hospitality.

Judging by the popularity of a “Day at the Polo” tickets for this new

“Fashion on the Polo Field” event are going to be very much sought

after. So don't leave it too long to book through Lizzie Dyer on 027

225 5221 or by email [email protected]. Numbers are limited.

OUT & ABOUT

It’s beginning to look

It comes as no surprise that there are more

lights than ever, but it is the overall effect of

these multi-coloured, synchronised lights

switching on and off, and thereby creating

different worlds around you, that is

guaranteed to leave you astounded.Of course, there is also a change in theme

each year. Last time, it was a preponderance

of Disney characters. This year, it’s a White

Christmas, with countless numbers of

snowmen everywhere in a white setting of

icicles and snow created with lights on the

roofs of the home and sheds of the owners,

Carl and Maureen Seaward, who have been

working on this project since February. The snowmen, and the accompanying polar

bears and reindeers, plus the occasional

Santa Claus, come in all sizes, both in the

main open area, where lights switch on and

off different assortments of characters, and in

the surrounding sheds, where there are

various themes that give us inflatable and

dancing characters, plus carousels and Ferris

wheels. There is also a large Christmas village

made up of small buildings.“Maureen comes up with the theme each

year. This time, she suggested White

Christmas and everything is designed to tie in

with that. It was a great idea because we don’t

have a White Christmas in New Zealand. The

display on the roof – with shooting stars and

snowflakes that appear between the songs –

took 1½ months to assemble,” says Carl.It is he who does the technical design and

construction work, while Maureen gets

together all the fantasy characters. “My wife

With nine months of preparation, the Christchurch Christmas Lightshow, at 650 Shands Road, Selwyn, is a work continually in progress that still manages to surprise and overwhelm each year.

searches the Internet all the time for unique

characters. We keep coming up with ideas and

just keep adding to it. Only a quarter of

Maureen’s total collection is being used this

year,” says Carl. And it’s not all Christmas. There is also a

spectacular Halloween display, complete with

skeletons, strobe lights and inflatable

characters, all put together with a pirate theme.

“We found putting Halloween and pirates

together works really well. It’s very popular, with

a positive feedback from so many people,”

says Carl.

OUT & ABOUT

THIS YEAR, IT’S A WHITE CHRISTMAS, WITH COUNTLESS NUMBERS OF SNOWMEN EVERYWHERE IN A WHITE SETTING OF ICICLES AND SNOW CREATED WITH LIGHTS ON THE ROOFS OF THE HOME AND SHEDS

The total number of lights used now exceeds

half a million. Last year, it was more than

350,000, which had risen from 300,000 the

previous year and 100,000 lights in 2011.Carl has lost track of the overall cost this year,

although he had budgeted $30,000 for the lights

and $15,000 for Maureen’s characters and

decorations. Some money is also spent each

year on technical refinements.“Basically, it’s a $100,000 light show,” says

Carl. During the last couple of years, much of

this sum went into the installation of a complex

electric system to keep the lights safely glowing.

In 2012, Carl rewired the entire property

because Maureen’s characters and

ornaments came from the US, where

electronics use a higher voltage. Power use

has also increased. “In 2012, the system used 28 kilowatts.

Last year it was up to 35 kilowatts. Just to get

the power grid cost $45,000. I’ve now got a

three-phase power circuit with substations

that is totally safe,” says Carl. “I now also

have two computers running the technical

side, with one for the light show, the other for

things like searchlights.”The Seawards’ Christmas light show will

open to the public at 8.30pm this Friday,

November 28, and then will be open until

midnight every night until December 30.

Admission is $5 per person, with under-two-

year-olds free.Carl explains that Maureen is still suffering

from rare and debilitating Lyme disease,

which she got from a tick bite in 2009. Some

of the admission money will go towards

treatment for the illness, which has confined

her to a wheelchair. “We have to pay for the medication

ourselves because it is not recognised by the

New Zealand medical system,” he says.

It was an outstanding day,” says Charlotte

Mooney from Addington, with general

opinion from the 23,000 people who

attended being that it was the best Cup Day in

years.

There was action on and off the race track,

with superstar mare Adore Me winning the

Christchurch Casino New Zealand Trotting

Cup, and smashing the New Zealand record in

the process.

Guest of honour on the day was Shane

Warne, who enjoyed the excitement of the day

and Canterbury hospitality.

“Shane presented the sashes for the

Westfield Riccarton Style Stakes winners,

visited the corporate marquees, interacted

with licence holders in the stables and

generally soaked up the atmosphere of the

great day,” says Charlotte, adding he was an

absolute hit with the crowds.

As always fashion was a big part of the day

with much thought and preparation put into

creating that perfect Cup Day outfit.

OUT & ABOUT

Cantabrians care:

By Rachel Smith

It was while enjoying Christmas with her family that a moment of realisation

came to Nikki Dew. “I just looked at the excess of food on our table and

thought if we could only give this to someone in need,” says Nikki.

“I JUST

LOOKED AT THE

EXCESS OF FOOD

ON OUR TABLE AND

THOUGHT IF WE COULD

ONLY GIVE THIS TO

SOMEONE IN

NEED.”

real estate agents give up their time to do the

packing and it is frenetic, physical work. They

are incredibly efficient and they love doing it.”

Nikki Dew

From one family to another this is exactly what

Nikki set out to do, joining forces with the

talents of Angelique Bott, Jane Black and Lisa

Ferguson, to create Families for Families.

What was initially going to be a two year

programme to support families in the aftermath of the

earthquakes has grown into something much bigger.

“$43,000 was raised in our first year alone,' says

Nikki. “In fact we worked so incredibly hard we

actually achieved that in two months of fundraising.

The people of Christchurch really believe in what

we are doing and everybody wants to be a part

of it.”

2014 marks the third year of giving food

packages for Families for Families, with

Harcourts Gold joining the charity as their

major sponsor. Harcourts Gold jumped at the

opportunity to give back to the people of

Christchurch, providing financial assistance

and superb logistical support helping with the

packing of the food packages.

“It is fantastic to watch,” says Nikki. “All of these

The charity works closely with The Salvation

Army, whose work Nikki is quick to praise.

“We know that the Salvation Army qualify the

people in need,” says Nikki. “They take a holistic

approach to finding solutions to help people and

they really do make a difference. Putting food on

the table is a very real challenge for thousands of

families and many of these people have never

needed assistance before. It is very sad.”

The premise behind the Families for Families is

quite simple - those who can afford to, make a

donation; with every $20 donation filling two large

boxes with a generous amount of meat, produce,

tinned food, bread and frozen goods.

“We source everything at the lowest possible

price,” says Nikki. “New World Fendalton and The

Mad Butcher Shirley have been unwavering in their

support by providing the staple items at cost, and

United Fisheries generously donate 1kg of frozen

vegetables for each food package.”

While Christmas is their focus, the charity also

provides food donations at three other key times

across the year - at the start of the school year

and twice over winter, with a total of 2,600 food

packages each year.

This year the Christmas packages will also

include a festive treat, with Lynette McFadden

Giving to families in need

from Harcourts Gold wanting to ensure

there was something sparkling in the box to

bring some joy to the children.

“We all take a very personal approach to

what we are doing,” says Nikki “It is

heartfelt – from one family to another.”

Families for Families have a big year

coming up, with plans for a number of

major fundraising events throughout the

year, including a food and wine event.

“There are also plans to link schools to

each other through giving,” says Nikki. “A

direct connection between the students could

be something wonderful. We need to embed

a sense of charity into our children too.”

“We would love more people and

businesses to come on board. To help a local

family in need – just $20 can make such a big

difference.”

Many people think the accountant’s

role is limited to completing their

nancial statements,” Jon

says. From Jon’s perspective,

preparing those nancial

statements is just the beginning. It’s

about using those statements as a

springboard to provide insight into

how the business is performing and

how it could do better, whether

improvement means increasing

turnover, reducing expenses or

possibly restructuring. By utilising nancial modelling

tools, Staples Rodway can stress-

test nancial forecasts, helping

clients achieve greater clarity and

control over their decision making

processes. Looking at your historic

nancial statements doesn’t

necessarily tell you what is going on

right now, or what might happen in the months

to come. “If you focus on the past, you’re going to

miss opportunities presenting themselves

now.” Traditionally businesses would spend a lot

of time deliberating before making decisions,

he says. Today the pace of business is faster,

so the decision-making process has changed. While caution is still necessary, it’s more

important than ever to be moving forward,

correcting issues as they arise. Delay and

indecision have

become far more risky

options. The cycle of reviewing results,

analysing possible improvements and

implementing them is now much shorter and

more frequent. In this environment, the early mover will

further develop their product or service as they

go along, analysing and acting on current

information. An example is Xero which

launched a product that was neither perfect,

nor complete. However, they deal with that by

continually listening to their customers and

acting quickly to add features and remove

problems. Key to making fast decisions is current data

and strong analysis. Many businesses are

using the cloud and getting current data, but

make the mistake of thinking that is enough.

The most effective way is to be using trusted

professional advisors to help interpret that

information, so that business owners and

managers can make better informed

decisions.Staples Rodway Christchurch Directors Jon

The owner of Terror to Love, Terry

over 50 years. Terry not only gives time and

It was an astounding result with Terror to Love winning the 2013 New Zealand Cup for the third time last year, but this time he would have made the history books. every owner and trainer,

as for Terry, he has

dream certainly came true.

Terry has other interests

besides race horses; he enjoys

watching rugby and league. He is a

sporting enthusiast and enjoys a good bet

on all sports games and racing.

He liked Terror from the word go. Terry's

first impressions of him as a two-year-old in

the sapling stakes was that he had

tremendous speed, ability, stamina,

intelligence and great presence. Terry is not

complete without his family around him on

race day, Janine his daughter, who has

multiple sclerosis, has been a loyal

supporter since day one. Unfortunately

IN THE CITYWHAT’S ONBARS & CAFESNEW OPENINGSRETAIL STORESDOWNTOWN

THE BUILDING:each ‘one of a kind’

THE DEVELOPER,By Melinda Collins

Stephen Collins doesn’t do things by halves. When he created Collins Real Estate in 1972 it grew to the largest in its market before amalgamating with Harcourts to form what is now the largest real estate brand in the country. Today Harcourts has more than 800 offices now spanning nine countries.

It was Stephen and his team who

developed the original technology,

systems, training and education

programmes never before seen in New

Zealand which have helped make

Harcourts the global leader it is today. “Many years ago I met the national

sales manager for BMW and he told me

Harcourts sales people and business

owners were collectively BMW’s

biggest customer in New Zealand. “That’s when I knew we were on our

way,” Stephen laughs. It was with this same gusto that he

approached his most recent

development at 151 Cambridge

Terrace. A striking six level, river-

inspired building on the boundary of

the Avon River precinct to be completed in

February, 151 Cambridge Terrace is, much

like Harcourts, a stand-out for the city and

a tribute to the man himself who proves

time and time again to be a leader, not a

follower. Despite the city’s physical

disfigurement, Stephen remains one of its

most fervent supporters. He may have lost

several buildings during the earthquakes

and as a result of the consequential

Government blueprint, but he’s never been

one to shy away from a challenge. On February 22, 2011 Stephen was 2500

kilometres up the Amazon on a boat.

Returning from dinner, he flicked on the

television. “The first thing I saw was the

Pynes building on the ground.

People died in that building and I owned it.” Weeks were spent in front of the Royal

Commission to determine liability. And, while

there was none, it was a harrowing experience. He’d already attempted to purchase the PGC

building prior to his successful acquisition in

2009. “It was built by the Ministry of Works for

the Drainage Board and it was one of the most

over-specced and overbuilt properties in

Christchurch. “I wanted to buy it because it would be really

safe.” A property investor, Stephen’s income

literally disappeared post-quake, then the

Government began purchasing his properties

which fell in the frame. “So we went through a

period of uncertainty and I thought ‘do you go

buy something existing, do you go to another

city, another country, what do you do to replace

your investment income?”“I looked at what was happening in

Christchurch and I thought if everybody takes

their money and goes elsewhere, we’re not

going to have a Christchurch.” There’s more than a sense of a soft spot for

the city where his mother arrived during the war

and his father followed in 1946. It’s a tangible affection and one he’s willing

to share. “Christchurch has been good to me, it

has been my business base for most of my life

and I felt I had a responsibility to reinvest back

into the city.”Stephen had some land he could have

rebuilt on, but that was never going to be on

the scale he envisioned. He wanted to be by

the river, he didn’t want to be in the

Government’s redevelopment zone and he

wanted to be outside the controls of the central

business district. “My first criteria was

position,” Stephen says. “Secondly I wanted it to be the safest

building in Christchurch and the third criteria

was I wanted to be able to drive past the

building in 10 years and still be proud of it.”He found what he was looking for in the

Cambridge Terrace site and set about creating

something one of a kind. “This is the first time

that I’ve built a building where the finished

product looked better than the architect’s

render,” he says proudly.Stephen is passionate about the future of the

central city space and, although he says the

suburban pockets of activity spread far and

wide aren’t ideal, he believes there will be a

second wave of central city activity in the future,

if we can create the vibrancy to encourage it in

time for leases elsewhere to expire. A university campus, performing arts, theatre,

bars and restaurants, together with anything

which will encourage people into our central

business district is to be encouraged, but some

serious thought needs to go into CBD access

and parking. “My vision is for an exciting, beautiful,

modern, user-friendly city that works financially

and economically as a place we can live in and

enjoy.” He’s been busy getting @Tony’s Teppan Yaki

Restaurant back in business after two years and

151 Cambridge Terrace is preparing for its

February opening, but Stephen doesn’t show

any signs of slowing down. In fact, he has just

purchased a Category 2 Homestead which was

severely damaged in the quake and he is

committed to restore back it to its former glory,

he’s busy making decisions on some land he

still owns in the central city and as well as his

own children who both live in the UK he now

has a new family with a nine and ten year old

to keep him on his toes. That’s not even including the committees

he’s involved with; he’s on the board of the

Canterbury Employers’ Chamber of

Commerce, CPIT and the Christchurch

Heritage Trust, and he’s still on the Harcourts

International Board of Directors, although he

has retired from his position as Chairman of

Lane Neave Lawyers after 10 years he still

supports a number of organisations and

charities in Christchurch. “There’s a wonderful old Chinese proverb

that really scares me to be honest, and it goes

like this ‘House finished, man die’. So when

you’ve had a busy life I don’t think you can just

turn off the switch and say I’m going to sit at

home and watch TV now. “You’ve got to keep your brain going, you’ve

got to have challenges, you have got to have

excitement.”

“I looked at what was happening in Christchurch and I thought if everybody takes their money and goes elsewhere, we’re not going to have a Christchurch.”

Now, lmmaker Samuel Miller has spent

more than 10 years putting together a

documentary, “Charles Luney – Master

Builder”, about this remarkable man.

Samuel began the interviews for this lm

back in 2003 but completion of the project was

interrupted by the earthquakes. The

documentary was only recently nished and

will have its rst public screening at the

Hollywood Cinema, at Sumner, at 8pm on

Sunday, November 30.

In honour of Charles Luney

By Hans Petrovic

Charles Seymour Luney

lived to the grand age of

101 and, during his 80-

year career as a builder,

his company constructed

many of Christchurch's

most important buildings.

LUNEY'S WIFE,

ENA, WHO DIED

FIVE YEARS

BEFORE HIM,

HAD SAID OF

HIM THAT HE

WAS “TOO BUSY

TO GROW OLD”.

A West Coaster, Samuel had never heard

of Luney until a friend, who was in the

building business, suggested that he make

a lm about Luney, who is included in the

Twelve Local Heroes bronze busts in

Worcester Boulevard, outside the

Christchurch Arts Centre.

Born in Lyttelton in June 1905 and dying in

November 2006, Luney founded his own rm,

C.S. Luney Ltd, in 1926. Four years later, the

company completed its rst major project, the

Radiant Hall, which later became known as

the Repertory Theatre in Kilmore Street.

The rm continued to grow and went on to

construct a number of prominent Christchurch

buildings, including the Christchurch Town

Hall, Princess Margaret Hospital, Christchurch

Public Hospital extensions, the Central Library,

the Park Royal Hotel and the CBS Canterbury

Arena, which is the South Island's largest

indoor arena, now known as the Horncastle

Arena. Many were designed by the architects

Warren and Mahoney.

Luney's wife, Ena, who died ve years

before him, had said of him that he was “too

busy to grow old”. He was survived by their

four daughters, 12 grandchildren and 10 great-

grandchildren.

Film director Samuel Miller managed to

interview Luney a couple of times for the

documentary, with his commentary taking up a

major part of the lm. The director was also

fortunate enough to lm Luney's constructions

just before the Christchurch earthquakes.

Having converted Christchurch to a modern

city of gleaming buildings, Luney left a lasting

epitaph to a life well lived.

To honour Luney's magnicent contributions

to the character of our city, this Sunday's

screening of “Charles Luney – Master Builder”

at the Hollywood Cinema will be introduced by

the Wizard of Christchurch.

A Website, www.charlesluneythelm.com,

Summer diamondsSunburnt deserts and a hit of retro Californian glamour were designer Deanna Didovich's inspiration for Diamonds, Ruby's covetable spring/summer 2014 collection.

Shot in Sydney's surreal Cronulla Sand Dunes, the Ruby Diamonds campaign captures the beauty of the natural environment at dawn. Renowned Australian photographer Steven Chee worked his magic

yet again, illuminating the magnificent Valentina with first light.Ruby designer Deanna Didovich explains: “This season I was intrigued with the idea of weaving still life images through our campaign to compliment and highlight the amazing Valentina. Delicate white Cyclamens and vibrant Magnolia blooms were perfect against the crystal sand dunes.”The Ruby Spring/Summer 2014 Diamonds collection is in store and online at shop.rubynz.com.

As owner, designer and manager of Florian

Rhodes at The Tannery, she is able to do

this and much more, creating high quality

leather goods in Christchurch. From designs that have been refined over the

past 50 years, Michelle adds her own finishes -

splashes of red and Italian print leather, silky

cowhide and shades of lotus, cream, antique

and sienna. “I’m a strong believer of being in control of

what you make,” says Michelle with responsible

manufacturing and preservation of local skills an

important part of the business. “If you buy our

bags you are buying something unique that is

made in Christchurch.”From their workshop and outlet store at 163

Ferry Road, leather and hide are carefully cut

and stitched. The cutting of the hide is an art in

itself, says Michelle, with a lot of time taken to

choose hide patterns for each particular section.“The cowhides we use are the best in the

world,” says Michelle, with all cowhide sourced

locally from the South Island. They produce a wide array of products from

the hide, and their leather which is sourced from

reputable tanneries in Italy. From sturdy hat

leather travel bags and hand bags of all sizes, to

clutches, purses, diary, book and iPad covers,

and floral leather toilet bags, Florian Rhodes is

much more than just a bag shop. “I love the design aspect,” says Michelle, with

her love of travel an inspiration for many of the

new designs which will appear in their new

winter range.

Top Secret Nutrition is a leading provider of weight management and sports nutrition solutions. Its unique supplement L-Carnitine

Plus Green Coffee Bean Extract is a blend designed to support energy and metabolism. It comes in the form of 60 easily digestible caps, and loaded with 800mg of green coffee extract per serving, it is an ideal choice for those looking to lean out and feel good during the process.

The green coffee extract is extracted from coffee beans that have not yet been roasted. There are two key compounds in unroasted coffee beans: caffeic acid and chlorogenic acid. Chlorogenic acid and caffeic acid in green coffee extract have been clinically studied and suggested to have several beneficial effects on weight management.

The other key ingredient, L-carnitine, is a naturally occurring amino acid that plays a vital role in promoting the management of fat. It functions as a transporter of fatty acids into the mitochondria, the metabolic furnace of the cell, and as such it has been suggested that an adequate supply of L-carnitine is necessary for the maintenance of good health and energy.

The team at Health 2000 Merivale are very particular about what is offered to customers. They say this synergistic fat management supplement meets their high standard of approval, with its natural properties believed to be

They understand that customers want to look and feel confident at all times, particularly during the summer. They recommend that customers go in for a friendly chat to find out which solution best meets their needs. Spirit of ‘slow’fashion

Perriam produces New Zealand-made merino clothing that embodies the comforting luxury inherent in the spirit of the high country. The heart of the label is Christina's family and their farm, Bendigo Station in Central

Otago – a place of rich history, pioneering spirit and enduring natural beauty.Bendigo, also the home of the famous merino wether, the late Shrek the

Sheep, hosted an exclusive catwalk show for the launch of the first Perriam Woman Summer 2015 Collection, last month.

The Merino Shop in Tarras Village – home to Christina's original labels 'Christina Perriam' and 'Suprino Bambino' – has undergone renovations to include the collection and the online shop perriam.co.nz is open.

The launch has been a huge milestone for Christina, who has been designing women's wear and baby/children's clothing for the past 10 years.

“The continuing growth of Suprino Bambino and Christina Perriam made me feel it was time to develop a united lifestyle brand that sat under the one label. Perriam was an easy choice because it is my last name and embodies my heritage,” Christina says.

“I want to create a brand that is a household name. Perriam is about luxuriating in life, slowing down. It's about slow fashion, not fast fashion, but it is fashion-forward. I want to share the spirit of the high country and the history and natural beauty of Bendigo Station though my collections. Perriam presents merino that is everyday-wearable and cool at the same time.”Well-known

Central Otago fashion designer Christina Perriam has unveiled Perriam, her new luxury lifestyle fashion brand.

Although we may be loathe to admit it, as we

There are warm copper tones for hair this season, and Rodney Wayne at Westfield Riccarton know just how to bring out your best summer look.

Swish Summer Hair

With copper tones ranging from bright to gentle, salon owner Rachel Legge, says that cuts

for the coming season are versatile, ranging from the return of the pixie cut to one length long styles.

Just as important for great looking hair is ensuring you provide the extra touch of care needed over summer. Exposure to salt, sun and chlorine means hair can easily become dry and colours may fade quickly.

Rachel recommends the Kérastase Soleil specific summer range, including shampoo, conditioner, mask and protective micro mist, which provides everything you need to keep your hair in great condition.

During the month of December clients have two chances to win fabulous prizes at the salon. Clients who book an appointment for following months will go into the draw to win $400 worth of prizes, including hair care products and services, while those who have a cut and colour before 5 December have the chance to win a gorgeous hair getaway. Getaway prizes

include a personalised style session with the Rodney Wayne Art Team, two nights for two at the Hilton Auckland and $500 cash.

The salon is also very pleased to welcome a familiar face back to the team, with the return of Jess McConnochie, a previous floor manager.

“I'm very excited to have her here,” says Rachel, with Jess taking on a new role as salon manager.

Making your appointment has just been made that much easier through their new online

booking system, with Rachel recommending clients book now for their pre-Christmas styling.

Rodney Wayne Riccarton will be open extended hours, from 9am – 10pm from 15 – 23 December, and will be open every day over the holiday season, except Christmas Day itself.

Visit www.rodneywayne.co.nz or give Rachel and her team a call on 341 7995 to get your best summer hair.

The buzz is back in Kaiapoi, according to long-time main street retail resident Michael Blackwell of Blackwell’s Department Store.

Memo. Finding the perfect Christmas gifts

for the entire family is easy at

Blackwell’s. Take a peek at the

inspiring window displays to get a

glimpse of what’s in store. Step inside

and you’ll find a huge array of kitchen

and giftware, apparel, homeware

and accessories. From handbags

and hats to wall art and clocks, and

everything in between, Blackwell’s has all your

Christmas bases covered. It’s also the closest fishing shop to the mouth of the

Waimakariri River. Blackwell’s lures even the most

dedicated fishing enthusiast with its wide range of

fishing supplies and accessories. It wouldn’t be Christmas without Santa and we have

it on good authority that he will be stopping at

Blackwell’s closer to the date. Photos with the jolly red

fellow will be free – it’s just one way Blackwell’s gives

back to the community that supports them.

The river is looking fantastic, we’ve got new

shops and cafes to enjoy, and the brand new

library and service centre isn’t far away.

There’s a real buzz of positivity in the township,

which is refreshing for everyone after the last four

years. And it’s just in time for Christmas too.“It’s a really exciting time in Kaiapoi’s history and

it’s great to be part of it. Walking

down the main street, you can

feel the anticipation and

excitement. There’s a spring

in everyone’s step. We

reopened in November last

year and we’ve seen loads of

changes since then. Kaiapoi is

a real destination again.” The recently reopened

Blackwell’s Department Store is

just one of the new faces

revitalising Kaiapoi’s main

street. A variety of new buildings

and retail outlets have brought

renewed life and vigour to the

picturesque North Canterbury retail precinct,

restoring the town’s appeal to locals and visitors

alike. As well as a swanky new building with great

spaces and even better atmosphere, Blackwell’s

Department Store has also recently welcomed a

range of new fashion brands, just in time for

Christmas. New menswear labels include Ben

Sherman, Berlin shirts and RF Scott, and for women,

new labels include Review, Preen, Vassalli and

Optimum attention during pregnancy“You're pregnant!” What joy that news brings to so many people. This private group practice consists

the specialists work

should a patient's

pregnancy deviate from the

the goal is to achieve a safe

“Recently we were able to intervene very

quickly for a young woman whose high blood

pressure at 30 weeks indicated signs of toxaemia, threatening

both her and her twins,” says Clinic Manager Helen

the babies and prevented further health problems for the

mother.” Helen adds that often patients come under the

practice's care because of problems identified in a previous

pregnancy or they may be referred due to potential problems

with their current pregnancy. “All our clients are encouraged to

meet each of our specialists during their various ante-natal

visits. That means that prior to the delivery women know the

doctor who will manage the labour and birth giving a real

sense of reassurance and comfort.”

Christchurch Obstetrics Associates charge a set fee for their

There's an old

Japanese concept

'Kaizen' which refers

to 'good change', a

process of continual

improvement. When

applied to the

refers to activities

which continually

improve all functions.

Although there is absolutely no

Japanese connection to Quality Hotel

have been written specifically for the long-

established Papanui hotel, which has

undergone a continual transformation since

its reopening two years ago.

Just 5km from the CBD and 8km from the

central city location, perfect for intimate

Function and Conference Manager Paul

“Since reopening two years ago after

renovated our accommodation rooms, as

well as our food and beverage areas and

A dedicated wedding planner will

Master butcher: a life less ordinary

CUISINERECIPES FOOD WINE BARS & CAFÉS RESTAURANTS

by Hans Petrovic

Nellie Lovell-Smith Riley has long had a deep interest in animals, gardening, farming and cooking, and is now extending this further into a master-butchery apprenticeship.

Until about four years ago, Steve worked at

his own butchery, Cashmere Cuisine, at the

southern end of Colombo Street, where he also

trained young master butchers. He has won many awards

for saveloys, sausages, hams and other small goods. Now aged 25, Nellie first took her interests to Lincoln University,

where she did a course in farming. After completing this, she

worked on a farm, while also helping an artist friend who specialises

in carcass sculptures.“I was always fascinated by farming, particularly the animal side

of it – sheep and beef – and I also hunt,” she says.Another of her interests is cooking, which Nellie began

professionally at the Mt White Station, over the Waimakariri River on

Arthur’s Pass. “I did a lot of meat cooking there – particularly mutton

– and learned how to cut it,” she says.“Next, I took a job gardening at the Christchurch Botanic Gardens

and trained as a horticulturist, which is what I feel I really am.”

For this, she could not have chosen a better person

A NEW MENU HAS GIVEN MATSUO THE OPPORTUNITY TO ADD NEW TRENDY DISHES LIKE FLAMED GRILLED SUSHI, WHICH ARE PROVING VERY POPULAR WITH TOMI PATRONS.

Metropol November 27, 2014 57

That’s thanks to the culinary skills of chef

Matsuo Tomita, who has cooked for 40

years in his homeland and came to New

Zealand at the urging of son in-law Joe and

daughter Mayuko Tomita, who own and manage

this traditional Japanese style restaurant. A new menu has given Matsuo the opportunity

to add new trendy dishes like flamed grilled

sushi, which are proving very popular with Tomi

patrons. Flamed grilled salmon belly (using this

fatty part of the fish we create lots of flavour, Joe

explains) and flamed grilled prawns are options

on the nigiri set. Also new are three set menus. “Many

people who are not familiar with

Japanese food can find choosing

from our wide range of dishes

difficult so we have included

these to make Japanese dining

easier to understand,” says

Joe. Designed for one person,

each features a main, assorted

sashimi, nigiri sushi, two sides

of the day, miso soup and rice.

“It’s a good introduction to

Japanese food,” Joe says. Those who are more familiar with

the cuisine have a huge selection of

small dishes, sushi rolls, sashimi, nigiri sushi,

tempura, deep fried, grilled, and simmered

dishes, including Tomi’s signature dish - slow

cooked Red Wine Ox Tongue with seasonal

steamed vegetables. “It’s a favourite with

Asians, but Kiwis who try it really love it too,” Joe

says. Tomi has also introduced a weekly special

dish featuring seasonal produce - currently

tempura asparagus.Last but not least is a new sake menu. “My

father in law and I are real sake enthusiasts, so

we have have imported two premium sakes

directly from Japan,” Joe confides. To introduce the uninitiated, the sake list

includes basic sake knowledge and

That is until you hear from patients at St

George’s Hospital, in Papanui Road,

about the excellent food that’s served

there.Indeed, when asked, no one has ever before

heard of a hospital that, on a typical day, offers

a choice for lunch of Mediterranean tuna salad

with boiled egg, beans and sundried tomato;

Cajun spiced beef skewer on minted

couscous; or feta courgette fritters with yoghurt

dipping sauce. And this menu changes for lunch and dinner

every day of the week. For this unheard-of hospital food service, the

patients at St George’s can thank executive

chef Hans Schuhmacher, who has been at the

Hospital for seven years, slowly introducing his

revolutionary policy.“People have preconceived ideas about

hospital food, but St George’s is a private

hospital so we have the opportunity to provide

quality products,” says Hans.“When I came here, I saw a huge potential.

St George’s is an old establishment with a

reputation for a tradition of excellence, but their

food didn’t go along with this philosophy. It took a while to get my team to understand

the changes and to get them going.“Now, we get a lot of positive feedback from

our patients. They’re often very surprised at

what is put in front of them because they don’t

expect that kind of service in hospitals. Some

patients choose to come here because of the

food service.”The hospital charges a certain rate for a

room and the improved food service has not

pushed that price up. “The quality food does

not mean people have to pay more,” says

Hans.

The hospitals cafe used

about three years ago, the

cafe is open to the general

public and can cater for

private functions, all food is

made from scratch onsite

every day, and the cafe is proving

popular with locals. For example, try the Hungarian beef

goulash pie. The café now also handles function

catering for business lunches, birthdays,

morning and afternoon teas, with clients picking

up the food.Hans now runs a team of international chefs

who provide the patients’ daily meals, which

could include anything from sweet and sour

terakihi fillet seasoned with lemon and ginger; to

baked chicken roulade with a tomato balsamic

reduction; slow-roasted beef rib with a spice

rub; and baked beef lasagne with basil pesto.

High-quality food is something you associate with top restaurants, but never ever with hospitals. Indeed, good food at a hospital is automatically considered an oxymoron.

And if the name seems familiar, so it should be! Pre quake, Mr

Sushi was a popular destination on Colombo Street since

2001. More recently its loyal customers and other discerning

sushi fans have been enjoying the fresh tasty offerings at the food

court in The Colombo, where they serve, as I am reliably informed by

a teenaged sushi connoisseur, the best sushi in town. The classy, bright, modern new Victoria street premises are the

perfect venue then for more of that sushi that’s a cut above the rest.

What makes his sushi a standout? Owner Kelvin tells me it is

because all his sushi is super fresh – made in front of your eyes

throughout the day - using quality products. While he has packs ready to go for those in a hurry, here people

have the option of choosing their own, mixing and matching

favourites from the beautifully presented covered dishes on the

counter. But Mr Sushi is about more than simply sushi. There is also a

large, easy to read menu with a selection of hot Japanese dishes

that include donburi, tempura, sashimi, and udon. While the choices

are varied, teriyaki chicken is a favourite and spiced chicken donburi

is also popular, Kelvin says. The secret? The crispiness of the

chicken and his own spicy sauces made using secret recipes.Whether you take out or sit at one of the tiny tables with their view

of the action on ever changing Victoria Street, Mr Sushi is the place

to go for fresh, tasty Japanese.

connoisseurs’ choice

Joining the phalanx of adventurous eateries springing up along Victoria Street is Mr Sushi at no 43. All black and white with natural timber and floor to ceiling glass windows, it’s a stylish and inviting sushi restaurant, open Monday to Friday, 10am to 4pm.

For family gatherings it can be difficult to

find a venue which caters well for large

groups and has something for everyone.

The Garden Restaurant, at Garden Hotel on

Marshlands Road in Shirley, does this very

well. The Garden offers an extensive buffet at

a set price, which varies from lunch to dinner

and week to weekend, and for children is

dependent on their age.

The range of food available is quite staggering

with a mix of local favourites and international

Christmas

Are you ready for Christmas? The Gift Box of Lincoln certainly is. The store even has a countdown display telling everyone how many days there are to go to that “special time when we get to share love and laughter with those closest to us.”

Add to that all the wonderful and quirky advent calendars around the store – from tiny numbered Christmas

stockings on a line and a mouse wearing a numbered apron – and you have no doubt that this is a store that does Christmas in a big way.

There really is little need to go anywhere else for your Christmas decorations and gift shopping. There is everything you need for your Christmas table and decorations that are just that little bit different from the norm. There are trees, candles, musical LED Christmas scenes and Father Christmas figurines.

Totally charming is the bear with a little mouse on its shoulder who reads the whole of the “Night before Christmas” story. If you don't have a chimney any more for Santa Claus to come down don't worry. You can leave a special Santa key out for him.

The Gift Box boasts gifts for her, him, them and you and the store does indeed burst at the seams with highly desirable gifts and exciting homewares. For the party-loving person who has everything why not buy a red metal tractor or fire engine that doubles as a drink cooler? Definitely a conversation piece. And every bloke needs his own “Man Tin” for keeping leads, screws and other pointless stuff.

Come and visit the local girls Helen, Charlie, Jan and Andrea at The Gift Box, 19 Gerald Street just along from Coffee Culture. Phone (03) 325 7570. Open seven days. Open till 7pm Friday 12 and 19 December. You'll find free gift wrapping, a free gift with purchase over $100 and the chance to win a $2,000 shopping spree.

HOMEEXTERIORSINTERIORS BUILDING OUTDOORS KITCHENS & BATHROOMS

New Zealand's Supreme Homes AnnouncedThe Registered Master Builders 2014 House of the Year national winners were announced recently in Auckland. Canterbury was in the spotlight with Metzger Builders Limited taking out the Outdoor Living Award and Heart of the Home Kitchen Award for a home in Duvauchelles, Canterbury.

Winner of the Resene Sustainable Home Award

Bella Homes for a home in Hikurangi, Northland

“This home was designed to maximise the spectacular

view and blend with the coastal landscape.

“The entire home is clad with factory oiled vertical

shiplap cedar and the ceilings to the upper level are

lined with negative detailed plywood.

“The incorporation of thermally broken joinery, tiled

floors for thermal mass, highly specified insulation,

LED lighting and a large bank of photovoltaic panels,

with the solar battery bank in the basement level,

means the power the home does not consume is fed

back into the main grid.

“Along with the above, the collection and storage of

storm water and the environmentally approved

wastewater system make this home very sustainable

and close to being self-sufficient.”

HOME

Winner of the Supreme Award for Registered Master Builders 2014 Renovation of the YearNational category winner – Future-Proof Building Renovation Award over $500,000

Absolute Building Services Limited for a renovation in Devonport, Auckland “This was a renovation of major proportions with numerous challenges for the builders.” “Structurally, everything except the garage, kitchen floor joists and lift shaft were removed. The builder was faced with a difficult building environment, with a steep site requiring scaffolding over 10 metres high, and a narrow shared drive providing the only access to the site. “The kitchen was removed and placed in storage before being reinstated in the existing position. Clever cavity sliders allowed the entry foyer to be closed off from the large living area, and the balance of the home was incorporated into three levels.

National category winner – Carters New Homes $1 million - $2 million

Lost Craft Carpentry Company Limited for a home in Onetangi, Waiheke Island“Taking full advantage of the unobstructed views, the house has been designed primarily as a family residence, but also as luxury holiday accommodation. “Each room truly maximises the outlook and meets the brief beautifully for a no fuss beach house that will only get better with time. “Drying off from a swim in the pool, before lounging on sun chairs or huge beanbags overlooking the sea creates the ultimate relaxing experience.”

National category winner – GIB Show Home Award

A J Saville Builder for a home in Queenstown“This "Ski Barn" with an impressive entry foyer, featuring band sawn pine walls and cedar ceilings, has this home exuding cosy warmth and rural charm, perfectly created for that skiing holiday.” “The superb two level timber home has been designed with a combination of sunrooms and verandas to ensure maximum benefit is enjoyed all year round.

Winner of the Plumbing World Bathroom Excellence Award

Trevor Ward Builders Limited for a home in Closeburn Station, Queenstown“The bathing area is set slightly aside from the main functional area of the bathroom and is set in an angular shaped section of the room, which incorporates a floor to ceiling window allowing vistas of Lake Wakatipu whilst bathing.“The wall of the shower into the master bedroom is clear glazed from floor to ceiling, allowing the occupant a view through the master bedroom to the lake and beyond.

National category winner – Builder's Own Home Award

Urban Homes for a home in Tamahere, Hamilton“The creative use of materials, including precast panels, exposed steel roof structures and dark stained vertical cedar cladding makes for a striking finish.“The double sided fire adds atmosphere to the two living rooms and the designer contemporary kitchen leads directly to the outdoor living area, which is made even more adaptable to the weather conditions with the installation of adjustable louvres.

innovative problem solvers and I'm proud to be a client, thank you”

Winner of Outdoor Living Award Winner of Heart of the Home Kitchen Award

Metzger Builders Limited for a home in Duvauchelles, Canterbury“This home's dual, semi-enclosed outdoor living spaces are generous and well-positioned to capture the magnificent views this home has on offer. “With a louvered opening roof, exterior fireplace and barbecue facilities, coupled with generous swimming and spa pools, the home owner has many options for entertaining as well as protection from the elements. “The beautifully crafted American Oak panelled kitchen finished in high gloss is a standout. “Black joinery is contrasted by the cream stone tops and tiles, and finished off with beautiful splashes of colour in fittings and splashbacks.“A large separate scullery serves the kitchen well and all the living and outdoor areas open out from this hub of the home.“A stand out feature is the centrally positioned tropical fish tank located above the cook top, so the owner can be entertained while preparing supper.”

National category winner – Master Build Services Renovation Award up to $250,000

Beach House Builders Limited for a renovation in Whangamata“As one of the original homes in Whangamata, the asbestos-clad two bedroom bach was stripped back to its bones on its journey to meet the dreams of the client. “Although the footprint of the existing home didn't increase, a modern holiday home was created, while still keeping the bach feel.

National category winner – PlaceMakers New Homes $250,000 - $350,000

Fowler Homes (Manawatu) Limited for a home in Feilding, Manawatu “A separate bedroom wing for the master bedroom, ensuite and small office is well positioned to the rear of the main living areas, including a well-equipped kitchen enabling the remaining two bedrooms and bathroom to be shut off when not in use.

We met Shane at a barbeque, he quoted for the build

and we are delighted we went with his company,” says

Gabrielle. After completing an apprenticeship in

Christchurch and building both here and overseas, Shane

returned to the city eight years ago to establish a company that

has grown to include a current team of 20 tradesmen.

The two storey property is constructed of Celcrete

complemented by copper panels and combines contemporary

elegance with relaxed easy living.

Downstairs, rooms flow effortlessly onto a covered deck with

adjustable louvres, a luxurious spa and salt water swimming

pool, while upstairs there are restful views of the tree-lined

grounds of Mona Vale.

The floor plan is ideally designed for a family with open plan

kitchen, dining and living room, an adjoining formal lounge,

large utility room, study, guest bedroom with ensuite and a

separate toilet.

Upstairs a wide hall provides a sunny place to lounge, rest or

read and leads to two double bedrooms for the Urquhart's

children, Harrison and Taylor. Their beautifully appointed tiled

bathroom has bath, shower, vanity and toilet facilities and

under floor heating.

Light bright and spacious, the interior

décor is an eclectic blend of eye catching

individuality. “My friend Alex Goodger of Kit

and Caboodle encouraged me to be far more

adventurous than I would have been on my own, I love the

horizontal striped walls in the entrance, the fantastic globe

lights and chandeliers and the metallic touches in the curtains

and lounge wallpaper,” says Gabrielle.

The white kitchen is brimming with storage, a convenient

breakfast bar and appliances hidden in a large butler's pantry

lined with modern stainless steel benches.

At least a couple of thousand people go

out of their way every rst Sunday of the

summer months to browse around the

In fact, many of the customers

Helen's fascination with

“It was a cool, wee shop, and a little

Christchurch earthquakes, that she

began the Shabby Chic Market

there.

“Actually, we had no intention

of buying the house until I

went there for an antiques

auction. I saw it for the first

time that morning and then

phoned my husband and told

him I had seen this amazing

cottage. I bought it at auction

later that day,” says Helen.

“The house was built in 1874 and belonged to

the Graham family. Their daughter Annie died six

months before we bought it in auction, so we're

the second owners.

“It was about two years before the

earthquakes that I first wanted to make it into an

antique shop – but it turned into a market.”

Helen credits a baker who also collects

antiques, Shane Tatom, of the Nikau Bakehouse,

near The Brewery, in Woolston, with giving her

the most important advice on the format for

a Sunday market.

It was Shane who told her to hold the

market on the first Sunday of the month

from September to May – and to stick to it.

Of course, Shane, who has his own bakery

stall at the market, was the first “foodie”

there.

“We started with seven stalls on the front

lawn – all vintage stuff – and now have 35

to 38. Most of them are regulars, with a few

new ones to keep it fresh and interesting.

They just all like it.

“It's got that wonderful feeling, hasn't it? I

can't believe this has happened. The

market's taken off and it just keeps

growing. It's wonderful!

“It's also quite scary. I just keep myself

inside the house, selling my own goods,

and don't go out. I don't like crowds. In the

old days, I was very shy but now I can talk

to anybody.

“One woman has just bought eight of my

blankets for her daughter's wedding, to use

as picnic rugs. I've been a blanket-collector

for a long time. I saw the potential in it and

now everyone's doing it – making cushions

and clothing. You think about it. It's pure

wool and good-quality material,” she says.

Helen also attributes the success of

Shabby Chic to her daughter, Sarah. “She

really pushes it along. She creates things

that are there, such as the Devonshire tea

area with umbrellas. Within hours of the

end of the market, Sarah has put photos of

the customers and stall-owners onto our

Facebook site, thanking them for taking

part.”

the perfect way to begin your Christmas shopping.

Most Wanted for Christmas

From this ideal location at Industria you are

surrounded by gift possibilities, from pieces of

statement furniture to their selection of retro

games and stunning lines of jewellery.

For those who have been searching for pieces of

homeware from General Eclectic, Janine from

Industria says they have a huge collection which is

proving to be ever popular.

A taste of New Zealand also features throughout

the store, with work by New Zealand artists including

Jane Crisp, Kathryn Furniss, Crispin Korschen,

Christchurch based Hamish Allan and Tin Man

pieces by Tony Cribb, as well as jewellery lines from

Danielle, Cloud 9, Pigeonhole and Jill Main.

In addition to their bigger ticket items Janine says

they provide a great choice when it comes to smaller

quirky or novelty pieces. Many of these are a

reminder of time spent as a child, playing knuckle

bones or spending hours trying to get the wooden

ball on top of the handle.

For those who are that bit trickier to buy for, there

is the new must have selfie stick or smart power

phone chargers for teenagers, and for the guys a

great choice of wallets, watches, cufflinks and fun

socks.

Janine says they are popular for those

looking for gifts to send to New Zealand

family or friends who are living overseas,

with many items, such as Dick Frizzell

designed luggage tags, phone covers or

coasters - all perfect reminders of home.

As Steve Waring of Simply Heat says,

“heating systems should be a part of

the original design process, rather than

an afterthought.” It doesn’t make a lot of

sense, for example, to opt for a ceiling ducting

showcasing all of the upmarket and cutting

“IT'S IMPORTANT THAT I'M PUTTING BACK INTO THE

The recently held House Awards, run

through the Merivale Precinct Society, were

also funded through principal sponsorship by

Harcourts Holmwood.

Cindy-Lee assisted with judging in this year's

awards, which were presented earlier this

month.

The awards covered four categories –

commercial, renovated, new, and added touch

- new fence or landscaping. Judging

alongside an architect, interior designer,

photographer and artist, Cindy-Lee viewed a

number of commercial and residential

properties that had been nominated by people

in the community. The awards were based on

the street appeal of each property following

Southern Foundations Ltd director Bevan

warmer, stronger and

traditional flooring

systems,” Bevan

says. “If people

understood the benefits

of using Allied Concrete’s

waffle floor, they simply

wouldn’t use a standard flooring

system.”Southern Foundations is a registered

installer of Allied Superslab and Bevan says

the product is a cost-competitive foundation

system which is fully accepted by territorial

authorities. Allied Superslab is what is known as a waffle

pod floor or raft foundation. In its simplest

form, square polystyrene pods are placed

within the foundation and the concrete slab is

poured with a criss-cross of steel reinforcing

ribs beneath it, creating a waffle-like pattern

when viewed from below. The beam grills within the concrete slab

provide a stiffer and stronger final product than

a conventional 100mm slab and, because of

this inherent strength a deepened perimeter

footing can usually be omitted. Allied Concrete

utilises a deeper pod within its Superslab,

which produces an even stronger finish

against competing products.“An Allied Superslab cuts the construction

time for the foundation considerably,” Bevan

explains. “A Superslab foundation can be built in four

days from start to finish and this will

significantly influence your construction costs.” By operating in conjunction with other

contractors, the company can provide

everything from soil testing through to design

and construction of your Superslab flooring,

providing engineered solutions for TC1, TC2

and even TC3 land categories throughout

Canterbury. For more information on how your build

project can benefit from Allied Superslab phone

Itht is their 10 address in seven years, with

their seven year birthday in November a

celebration of the longevity of Vast and their

loyal customers, who have always seen the

store as a destination in itself. The new spacious store showcases

everything that Vast Interiors has become well

known for – hand crafted timber furniture and

the large store, utilising their new Sanctum

screens which feature distinctive laser cut

designs. A grand four poster bed complete with

latticed bed head in whitewashed timber, is a

feature of one such room, and one of the many

pieces created from sustainably sourced

mango hardwood.

furniture is easy care and allows the wood to

continue to expand and contract as it ages.“No two are the same,” says Nicky, with the

distinctive timber meaning that each piece is

unique. “And you don’t wait - what you see you

can take home.”Forging a personal relationship with the crafts

people who create this furniture is an integral

part of Vast Interior’s philosophy of providing

truly sustainable products. This work takes

Nicky and Craig to India, to see where and how

their pieces are being made, and to ensure they

are working with like-minded people.Across the store is a selection of one off

items from India. These found antiques are

many and varied – an old wooden letter rack,

wooden print block buffet and hand painted

elephants.
