Methodical teaching of the initiation to collective

systems (defense end attack)

Basic tactical intentionsThat mean to learn the basic principles of the game:

Attack• If I have the ball: shoot, progress to goal, pass the ball.• If I don’t have the ball: to move for received the ball.

Defense• Defending the goal• Recover the ball

Individual Tactical

Page 3: Methodical teaching of the initiation to collective systems (defense end attack)

Specific tactical intentionsDevelop of the individual behaviors in different circumstances of the

game: Attack• Choose where and how pass the ball• Choose pass or shoot• What kind of shoot used• Best moment to shoot• Look for and to move to free spaces• Etc.

Defense• Work against the opponent (Screening)• Work related with the ball (Interceptions)• Collective work (Helping)

We have to develop this behaviors, first of all in global spaces (more and less reduced) and then practice them on the specific spaces.

Collective meansCoordinated actions between 2 or 3 players. Such as: Attack• Crossing• Screening• Pass and go• Etc.

Defense• Taking over (Changing opponents)• Sliding through• Etc.

We have to practice them directly on specific spaces.Once again we have to notice that this movements are also based on a correct individual tactical.

Collective Tactical

Collective systems AttackWe can develop the knowledge of offensive systems in three steps:1. General philosophy of the game against different kind of

defenses:• Closed defenses: Near 6 meters line• Open defenses: Lot of players out of the first line• Superiority or inferiority• Basic idea of fast break

2. Basic combinations against different defenses:• Transformations of the system• Basic movements of two backcourt with two pivots• Backcourt crossing in coordination with pivot• Changes of the sense the ball in coordination with pivot• Etc.

3. Specific systematic of each team.

DefenseThe process could be similar to the attack. The principal difference is that in defense the firs step (General philosophy of open and closed defenses) is the most important and it mark the develop of the others. For that reason we try to explain the general differences between both kind of basic defenses.

In reality almost all system have some percentage of open and closed. Any way we try to defined a little more the situation:

We have three aspects to considered:• The structure: That means the initial positions of the players. We can distingue three parameters.

» Width» Depth» Density

Page 7: Methodical teaching of the initiation to collective systems (defense end attack)

• The general tendency of actions of the players:

• Anticipation» Reaction

• The general action against different circumstances of the game:

» Tendency to the ball » Tendency to the opponent » Previous help (Dissuasion)» Help after fellow-player mistake

Page 8: Methodical teaching of the initiation to collective systems (defense end attack)

In the following graphic we can find the general characteristic of both kind of defenses.

OPEN DEFENSES CLOSED DEFENSES

All wind of movements, depend of the specific positions Particularly lateral movements

Depth but less density and widthDensity, probably width, but less

depth

Anticipation Reaction

Help only after mistakes Previous help

Individual tendency Tendency to the ball

If our players have a good performance in the individual tactical aspect (Screening, Interception, Helping) and they know how to interpreted them in the different kind of defenses, they could develop any collective system.
