BLOX on the SHORE

Page 9: Method Portfolio - Nathan Garcia

Blox on the Shore is a performing arts center located in downtown Chi-cago. The concept for the project begins with the long history of blues music in Chicago. Much like construction drawings begin on paper, music is first created in a similiar fashion. But music is confined within five lines, creating four spaces, so I decided to create four black box theaters. The theme is further described within the facades of the building, the south facade mimmicking the actual five lines of music and the north facade mim-micking the blues hexatonic progression through the lines of music. Final-ly, the movement throughout Blox is done with a series of ramps that are used to facilitate fluid movement.

The Blox facade was designed with a charcoal black EIFS system, with only white EIFS lining windows on the south facade.

Museum Cretacuous takes its patrons on an adventure not only through time, but through the materials that encased the remains for centuries. Using strictly natural materials for the majority of the structure and facades.

Downtown Champaign, Il, is a thriving neighborhood that centers around numerous contemporary restaurants that can arouse the taste buds of any fine restaurant connoisseur. So when designing this multi-functional building, the idea was to incorporate busi-nesses that would compliment the existing atmosphere. There-fore, the ground floor of Culinary Corner houses a culinary arts school and an upscale culinary store that allows for students and residents to develop their palates.

The residential floors of Culinary Corner are made up of one to four bedroom apartments. Each unit has a full kitchen that allows for its residents to fulfill any culinary experimentation.

Cognizant ViewingCognizant Viewing was a project that called for a viewing tower in the Champaign Sculpture Park. The design allows for sculptures to be viewed from different elevations.

Ostia OmageOstia Omage is a residential house, de-signed to meet the needs of the modern family. The house fuses the typical Ro-man house from ancient Ostia, a Roman port town, with the needs of today. The house utilizes an atrium in the center of the house for daylighting benefits.
