gismos, I still use the telephone to contact the local paper to advertise special events. The "Celebration of Marriage" weekend should have been placed in a coloured box in The Target for all to see, but it didn't appear.  My advert had gone into the system with all the others, but for some reason it had not moved on, what a pity, yet I hope all who arrived to see the exhibits in St. Luke's enjoyed their visit.  Results of competitions etc will be in next month's news.PURPLE FOR LENT:  Have you seen Revd. Fran's new look?  She has been sponsored to colour her hair for Lent.  If you like what you see why not make a donation, all money raised will help our Church Cluster. Revd. Fran has already raised £133.00 for a sponsored weight loss at the end of last year.Students from the WILLIAM LOVELL ACADEMY joined us in St. Luke's for our Annual Ashing Service which marked the start of Lent.  They brought with them freshly made soup and rolls to serve afterwards, it certainly tasted good.  Well done and thank you for such a special treat.SATURDAY 12 MARCH we hold our first PRIZE BINGO of 2016 at 7.30pm in Stickney Youth Centre.  We had good support last year and we hope this will continue.  Already a few prizes have been passed on to us for which we are grateful. We have a VALENTINES'S QUIZ SHEET launched at our Celebration Weekend, but the closing date is not until Monday 21 March.  Each sheet is £1 and this money is for our Church Cluster.  If you would like one please ask Angela Brady or Bev Gosling.  Completed entries can be passed back to us or placed in the Competition box in St. Luke's.WOMEN'S WORLD DAY OF PRAYER will be celebrated in the Meeting Point at the rear of Spilsby Methodist Church on Friday 04 March at 10.30am.  This years’ service comes from Cuba, its title is "Receive Children, Receive Me".  Afterwards we share the food people have brought.  If you are interested please contact Angela Brady on 01205 480661.Easter Blessings to you all.

Gardening tips for February:March is the month when things really heat up for the gardener and the garden (one hopes!) and is the true start of the growing season.  The weather however, can be pretty uncertain - days are becoming longer and plants want to get going, but the ground has to be right for success.  Patience should be the keyword therefore, as we contemplate our March gardening plans.

1).  Weeds will be making their presence felt, so if conditions permit get the hoe moving and kill them while they are young.

2).  Cloches are at a premium this month, so move them from on from those February planted crops as they become established and use horticultural fleece, laid a week or more, before planting or sowing to warm the soil.

3).  Broad beans and peas can be sown successionally to give you another batch ready later than the first.

4).  March and April are usually the right time to establish an asparagus bed if you are starting from crowns.  It will be two years before you will get a crop, but as it will be there for many years it pays not to skimp on the preparation.  Further information on this subject can be obtained from books or the internet.

5).  The middle to the end of March is a good time to plant your first early potatoes which should be well chitted by now.  Earthing up later on will provide some protection from late frosts, but you can still lose foliage so, again covering with fleece is recommended.

6).  Directly sow the under already set up cloches the following:a}   Beetroot - small fast growing varieties;  parsnips;  carrots;  radishes;  spinach beet and of course cut and come again lettuce and salad leaves.b}   In modules start off:-  lettuce; sprouts (early varieties ready for September); summer cabbages; celery; early cauliflowers and onions from seed.

7).  Now is the time to sow your chosen favourite tomato seeds in a heated propagator if you have one, or inside the house on a warm window sill.

In conclusion a word of encouragement from Alexander Pope who said 'All gardening is landscape-painting'.  Enjoy painting your garden and good luck with all your efforts.

Happy Gardening.

Resident’s AssociationStickney Resident’s Association has finally had the petition to ask for a designated crossing on the Main Road at Stickney presented to LCC. The Resident’s Association has been working hard collecting signatures and also asking for the assistance of their local County Councillor, Victoria Ayling, for her support. Over 200 signatures were presented to LCC at a full Council meeting. Signatures are still being collected. The Resident’s Association have also been busy organising and fund raising to have computer classes at the William Lovell Academy. The computer classes are for people who live in the village and who are over the age of 40. Some of you may ask why there is an age limit - this is simply because this generation missed out on computer lessons at school and training courses at work. They may be able to answer an email or input simple tasks, but are wary of testing other computer skills such as online shopping. With a lot of day to day searches going on line including pensions, benefits and job searches this is the group of

THE FRONT COVER OF THIS MAGAZINE?

The first day of March was chosen in remembrance of the death of Saint David. Tradition holds that he died on that day in 569. The date was declared a national day of celebration within Wales in the 18th century.

Mother's Day is a modern celebration honouring one's mother, as well as motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society. It is celebrated on various days in many parts of the world

Commonwealth Day is the annual celebration of the Commonwealth of Nations held on the second Monday in March each year, and marked by a multi-faith service in Westminster Abbey attended by Queen Elizabeth II as Head of the Commonwealth The theme for 2016 is “An Inclusive Commonwealth”

Saint Patrick's Cross is a red  X-shaped cross on a white field, used to represent the island of Ireland or Saint Patrick, the patron Saint of Ireland.  The red cross’s association with Saint Patrick dates from the 1780s, when the Order of Saint Patrick adopted it as an emblem

NOTES FROM THE PARISH COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON THURSDAY 04 FEBRUARY

There were four members of the public present.  Two came along to speak about the proposed Free Range Poultry Unit at Midville Lane and hand a copy of a letter, sent to ELDC, to the Parish Council. Issues include the siting of the shed and the potential problems with access via a narrow lane and a residential street.

A third member of the public came to speak about the state of the road surface at West Fen Lane, the pot holes are numerous and deep.  These have been reported to LCC by a number of residents as well as the Parish Council.

The third resident also enquired about the costs of elections and possible by-elections being passed to Parish Council by ELDC.  Dist Cllr Jones explained that ELDC have savings to make and will possibly be passing more costs to the Parishes.

Present:  Cllrs Dodds, Lamy-Edwards, Littlewood, Edwards, Wood and Bolland (Chairman) and Dist Cllr Jones

Apologies: were accepted from Cllrs Spring, Dist Cllr Ashton and County Cllr Ayling

Reports From Representatives On Outside BodiesDist Cllr Jones reported:A Parish Meeting will be called for West Fen by the District Councillors.  There could possibly be more problems with pot hole repairs due to LCC having no money to carry out the repairs.

Dist Cllr Ashton reported via the Clerk:A meeting about a crossing on the A16 was held with Richard Davies and he reported that the sites do not meet the criteria set out by LCC.  The only possible way to get a crossing is via an S106 agreement with any future developer in the village.  Richard Davies was asked to drive along Fodderdyke Bank while he was in the area.  He did and a report will follow.

Planning Applications Received The following plans were looked at and the following OBJECTIONS were made:S/169/02512/15 - A R Craven Farms Ltd - Erection of a free range poultry unit at land at Poplars Farm, Midville Lane, Stickney.The access to the proposed poultry unit is via narrow lanes that are continually reported to Lincolnshire County Council for repairs to pot holes and the road sides breaking up. The lanes are not suitable for HGV’s that would be carrying feed to the site and waste from the site. The proposed new roadway/track for access to the poultry shed will cross a water course. The RSPCA ‘Welfare standards for lay hens and pullets’ indicate that the stocking range must not exceed 1000 birds per hectare. In this case there should be 4880 birds in this free range poultry unit not the 28000 as proposed. The shed will be 2759m2 which reduces the outside area to 2121m2 therefore making the outdoor ‘free range’ area suitable for only 2121 chickens, if the RSPCA welfare standards are taken into consideration. The area, if over populated with chickens, could cause gape worm and coccilliosis. Currently the residents of Midville Lane have a view over the arable farmland that the area is best known for. The proposed structure will be 5.3m high and 90.45m long and will greatly impact on the skyline and views from Midville Lane, Fodderdyke Bank, Scarborough Bank and from the village of Midville. Will the water supply to Midville and Eastville be affected? Will the ‘dirty water’ storage be increased and disposed of as per information given by the Environment Agency? Witham Fourth IDB will require access to maintain the watercourses around the site, therefore the tree planting may be a problem. The existing gateway is not suitable for large heavy vehicles and the highway at this point is narrow for HGV’s to access or leave the area

The following plans were looked at by Councillors, online, and OBSERVATIONS were made:

S/169/02388/15 - Mr G Whittaker - Outline erection of a block of 6 dwellings at Land west of The Beeches, Main RoadConcerns for safety in this area of the A16 for another 'junction' to be situated in close proximity to the secondary school, to Tempest Garage and to the Tile Shop (Antiques shop shown on the plan). The plans show four parking spaces for the tile shop. There are staff that work in the shop and they have a van, at least three of the spaces will be taken up leaving only one space for customer parking. There is no delivery/collection area for the Tile Shop, or turning spaces for any larger delivery vehicles.

RepairsThe problems at West Fen Lane will be chased up again.  A loose Anglian Water drain cover in the A16 will be reported to LCC.ANY POT HOLES OR STREET LIGHTS IN ALL DAY OR OUT AT NIGHT CAN BE REPORTED TO THE PARISH COUNCIL CLERK. Alternatively it can be done direct via the LCC website where repairs are shown on a map so may have already been reported.
